As Rough As It Gets
Rough Cuts was recorded using a 30 year old Realistic mic, a $129 Washburn acoustic guitar in standard tuning, a beat up refurbished Hewlett Packard pc, and a free recording program downloaded off the internet. What lacks in professional production is more than compensated by raw intensity and artistic passion.
In desperation, while housebound & falling-down sick, suffering from a chronic form of Morbus Menieres Disease, Randy Thurman composed and recorded these hard hitting blues arrangements.
This album was inspired by the music of Papaw Fred Speers, Hobert Smith, John Fahey, Son House, and Robert Johnson - just to name a few.
Randy Thurman is not just another blues musician, or even just another guitarist, or composer/singer/songwriter. The music IS a core component of what makes Randy Thurman who he is, but it's not even half of the story.
The Knoxville News Sentinel calls Randy Thurman a "Tennessee Renaissance Man" in their January 28, 2007 article by Doug Mason, heralding Randy's inclusion in the international fine art juried exhibition "The Next Tortured Genius" at Monkdogz Urban Art in Chelsea NYC. "Randy Thurman missed his New York gallery debut. But the artist, composer, musician, poet, hybridizer, etc., has plenty of pursuits to keep him busy at home in Spring City, Tenn. The 'etc.' is a place-keeper in Thurman's resume. After all, there are nine muses. Who knows which one will light on his shoulder next?"
Although Randy, a southern boy of 42, has played guitar (electric, classical, and now acoustic blues) more than half his life, written poetry since childhood, and has been painting for the last ten or so years, the 'TN Renaissance Man' has only recently embraced his destiny as a multi faceted artist. The debilitating inner ear disease (Morbus Meniere's) that keeps him housebound for long stretches of time, has actually opened the door for Randy to be an artist and musician full time. Randy's strong Christian faith and his loving, supportive wife Christy, keep him going through the dark times.
Just as the "Next Tortured Genius" was only Randy's first international exhibit, the "Rough Cuts" album is only the first musical effort to be released to the world on CD Baby. Over the next few months, look for releases of Randy's improvisational acoustic jazz guitar, classical compositions, and more.
