The Roswell Incident transports the listener on a journey of sound exploration through Hang drum rhythms. Solo and layered Hang pieces weave through myriad moods ranging from simple and elegant to complex Tabla-like polyrhythms. Other songs employ additional instruments that complement the Hang including Randy's masterful Native American flute playing, Didgeridoo, Percussion, Vocal Harmonies and even a muscular Spoken Word reading on Dance at the Totem. Granger evokes new sounds from the Hang using alternative playing styles like using the bottom "Gu" side for a deep "Udu-like" bass trance beat and percussive finger work, even samba-like slides. The Roswell Incident is a sonic road trip through an inspired, mesmerizing landscape. Playful songs sit comfortably next to introspective meditations like Spiral in Beauty and Gu Groove. author: F. R. ThomasI agree with Danae Dunning's review of this CD, except for the description of it. This album is "spiritual and sensual," but I wouldn't also describe it as "background music." The first song, "Mi Corazon," is a real tour de force and remarkable for its depth. With every playing you hear different things going on. Randy's voice on "Mi Corazon" reminded me right away of Milton Nascimento, but with the hang, digiridoo flute, and Granger's artistry, the song is also quite innovative. "Lavender Lover Lullaby" is another great song--simple words but deep structure and emotion. Listen to the way Granger gets out of this song (the ending) as well as the way he gets into it. There are many moods and emotions on this CD by an accomplished musician. Great album.

"gu groove" (I didn't know that the gu-side could actually be played as well !) ... and I very much love "dancing at the totem" for the combination between music and poetry ... thank you for sharing your outstanding talent, heartfelt blessings, Maa

author: Danae DunningEver listen to music that just swept you away to another world? Well, that's exactly what Randy Granger's new cd, The Roswell Incident does. With it's haunting blend of Native American flute, vocals, digeridoo, and an unusual instrument call a hang (pronounced hung) drum, Randy weaves a musical landscape that is both peaceful and exhilerating. Before I continue with this review, I would like to explain a little about the hung drum. It has a sound that is similar to a calypso steel drum, but at the same time, produces unique tones of it's own. It looks like two woks stuck together. Or, as my friend's stepson put it, a ufo. (And the joke is not lost on Randy. Which is obvious both from the album title and the little green alien topper that sits on his drum.) Among the many wonderful tracks, my favorites are: Mi Corazon, Lavender Lover Lullabye (both which display Randy's amazing vocal talents.), Spiral In Beauty, Solstice (For Ancho), Full Moon Insomnia, and Dancing At The Totem; a fun song that combines chanting, flute and hung drum, with spoken word by poet Wayne Crawford. The music itself invokes a spiritual and sensual atmosphere that soothes the soul and invigorates the spirit. It is the perfect background massage, meditation, and even dancing. This is one ufo you definitely want to hitch a ride on. Danae Dunning

The magic that he weaves with the hang drum is special enough, but then with the addition of his Native American flute playing as well as the didgeridoo and vocals he creates a musical experience you haven't heard anywhere else. If you've never heard the hang drum played, this is where you start! (And we should encourage him to make a poster of the inside picture!)
