notes

Rachael Bell is a singer/songwriter from London who until recently appeared professionally as "RachaelRachael." She performs and records in a variety of musical styles, from acoustic soul to R&B to hip hop, all of which are unified by the expressiveness of her voice and the honesty of her lyrics. Ms. Bell has for the last two years released independent CD's on her own and with other UK musicians.

Raw Sunday is the product of a Sunday evening session recording of live guitar and vocals - raw!

Her latest CD, "Colour Me Blue," a collaboration with Brighton-based guitarist and composer Ross King, was recently released on iTunes and has received uniformly outstanding reviews, among which include:

"[A] wonderful piece of dreamy, laid-back pop. Reuben's Thread provides the slowpaced, atmospheric groove, while RachaelRachael adds her deep and soulful vocals to the mix - she keeps it smooth and subtle, letting her voice woo us with gentle skill. Very nice." (Mish Mash Music)

"With a dreamy magic, a dark outlook and, no doubt, the odd tear-stained lace hankie, 'Colour Me Blue' evokes the windswept vistas of The Cocteau Twins, All About Eve and Mazzy Star. Rachael offsets the icy fragility with an earthy passion that's part Nina Simone, part Joni Mitchell - nine tracks of bleak, beautiful bigness…." (Overplay)

“Colour Me Blue is an excellent recording. Let's start with Bell's voice: She sings with clarity, strength and confidence needed in a genre where the minimalist arrangements serve to expose singers with weak voices….. For those who complain about the sameness of music today, buying Colour Me Blue would serve as a great opportunity to move out of the musical comfort zone. Highly recommended.” (SoulTracks.com)

"Colour Me Blue" has been warmly embraced by the soul music community in the UK. Ms. Bell recently has been a featured new artist on "Soul'd Out Tuesdays" with DJ D'nyce on Hot 96 Radio in London and on "Soul Heaven" with DJ Mark G on Jazz Syndicate Radio. DJs Ruth Fisher of Starpoint Radio and Aja of Jazz Syndicate Radio have also featured her songs on their programs.

Ms. Bell's musical talents have also received critical acclaim in the United States. A popular New York entertainment magazine has described her as “a British singersongwriter with a smooth soul edge.” (Time Out New York, Nov. 22, 2007). Soul Tracks, the number 1 ranked U.S. soul music website, has recently selected her as both a “Spotlight Artist” and "Featured Artist." Her songs have twice this past year been selected for potential licensing by panels of publishers and record label executives in songwriting competitions held by the Songwriters's Pitch-a-Thon of New York (“SPONY”) and sponsored by BMI and ASCAP. Her track “It’s About Time” from “Colour Me Blue” is now in rotation on 4DaSoul.com, Neosoulcafe.com, Soulsoundsradio.com, and other leading U.S. soul music websites and web radio stations, as well as on WHCR 90.3 FM in New York, KAZI 88.7 FM in Austin, Texas, and other FM radio stations. DJ Nigel "Big Dose" Christopher also recently featured her music on his syndicated radio program "Sol Kafe" broadcast from Norfolk, Virginia.

Ms. Bell completed her first set of U.S. appearances this past December. Highlights included two charity benefit appearances at the request of “Dr.” Bob Lee of WBLS 107.5 FM radio as well as several TV and radio performances, including on Mr. Lee’s cable TV program “Open” and the music TV program “On the New York Circuit” (Channel 56, Manhattan Cable). While on tour Ms. Bell also performed live on the radio program “Rhythm & Soul” hosted by DJ Marko Nobles on WHCR 90.3 FM “The Voice of Harlem” and on the nationally-syndicated, hip-hop/R&B radio program “Live from Da Yard” broadcast from WLIU 88.1 FM in New York. For live performances, she typically accompanies herself on acoustic guitar and piano.

  • fine music.

This is fine music, RachaelRachael really has got the best control. Her voice is kind of sneaking onto me, leaving me with no chance to be indifferent. She claims to finally have become a whole person in her blog, well that comes clearly out in my loudspeakers. I sometimes miss longer parts with only the guitar, many of the songs have some really fine guitarplaying.

  • Raw Sunday - Rare Talent
    author: John Richardson

RachaeRachael takes a huge risk with this CD by choosing not to hide behind electronic gizmos and a lavish production. The risk pays off here, her voice, her guitar playing, her melodies and her lyrics are laid bare and all four stand up exceptionally well to the test. The voice is strong, clear and easy to listen to, the guitar work provides a delightful backdrop, the lyrics are effective and easily understandable without being twee and the melodies are strong and soon got into my head. I was humming 'To Die For' after just one listen. This is a very good album from a very talented lady. I suspect that success awaits RachaelRachael.
