Over the past eleven years Quinn has logged 35,000 nautical miles cruising the Caribbean and the eastern seaboard on her thirty-six foot sailboat. Miss Inclined is Quinn's fifth CD; it's clear that she's out for the long haul both as a cruiser and a songwriter.

For confirmed Quinn fans, her newest offering explores known territory: songs about sailing and living aboard boats that blend humor and poignancy. She makes light of the small stuff that frustrates all boaters, such as docking in tight places, and then draws our attention to bigger issues of personal relationships and independence. But there's a slight edge to this CD largely not found in her earlier albums. She challenges listeners who are living their lives by default. Quinn draws on her cruising lifestyle, both literally and metaphorically, to encourage us to escape from convention and conformity.

The message is at its most direct in "Always A Choice":

you've got yourself a mortgage
a day job, a wife
may not love it right now
but you've got yourself a life
but there is always a choice

The bluesy title track, "Miss Inclined", is a Mae West take on stepping outside of established mores in the quest for love and adventure:

hear those whispers on the wind
my good name maligned
they used to call me Miss Upstanding
now they call me Miss Inclined

In "Where Have All The Pirates Gone?", Quinn skewers the Caribbean cowboy whose dreams of a Buffett-like existence never extend beyond his perch on a bar stool:

he'll bluff about the beaches
the bikini babes, the boats
and the endless sea of overproof
on which this whole myth floats

The theme of taking control of one's life appears again in the hard hitting "Sailing On". A terminally ill sailor chooses to cruise rather than submit to the false hope of a miracle cure. This song, though painful, is a fierce celebration of independence:

well I rage against the darkness
with each heartbeat since he's gone
but I sure as hell won't tell you
the choice he made was wrong

For all the weighty material, this is a very funny album. Quinn is a clever lyricist and her songs are packed with wordplay and double-entendre. There's the wayward sailor "searching for true luff" and the unfaithful snorkeler announcing, "honey, look, I got a case of crabs". And Quinn knows only too well from personal experience that knocking out the pump-out station while attempting to dock will "raise a royal stink".

In terms of musical genre, there's a contemporary sound to the album that's difficult to pigeonhole. Quinn likes to call her work "bluewater music" and while there's a definite blues tilt to many of the tunes, folk and country rock influences are also apparent. The final song,
"Dancing With The Moon", is probably best described as gypsy music. It closes the album with a hedonistic call:

farewell toil, hello pleasure
tonight escape the careful measure
that keeps us all so neatly pinned
throw caution to the wind

Good citizens be forewarned. Quinn is downright subversive.

    We have just returned from sailing to the Mediterranean and discovered Eileen and her music at the 2006 Annapolis Boat Show. We purchased all of her CD's and love listening to them as we think about our year-long adventure at sea. I just ordered a second copy of Miss Inclined to send to one of our cruising friends who is now wintering in Greece. Thanks, Eileen, for the wonderful music!

    Outstanding effort! Great music, wonderfully clever lyrics. Makes me want to chuck it all and go sailing. The only disappointment was her obivious sunburn on photo on CD cover. I recommend you buy the CD, and recommend 30 SPF sunscreen for Eileen--although Canadians have national health care insurance!

    Eileen's music always hits home and Miss Inclined is no exception. Sometimes we think that she must have been "a fly on the bulkhead" of our boat and personally observed the funny and rediculous things that have happened. The "Don't make me dock" discussions have occurred more times than we like to admit and taking out part of a dock in the process was particularly interesting to us even though we don't talk about it. For anyone planning to cut the dock lines and go cruising, Eileen's music is a mandatory part of his/her nautical orientation.

    Twelve excellent tunes - Eileen puns her way through Shellfish Man and Miss Inclined, but the true classics for raw emotion are Sailing On and Always A Choice. Listen carefully to the lyrics on Going Home and Cruising Too Long, there is a message bertween the lines. Finally, you'll find yourself quoting lines from Where Have All The Pirates Gone to your "wanna be" friends!

    Up to Eileen's usual fun standards, this one has three songs that are well above average; Sailing On, Where Have All the Pirates Gone, and Going Home. You'll be tempted to play those 3 over and over, but don't. The whole CD is great. A bit more mellow than some of her other CDs.

    Eileen has done it once again singing those songs that hit on all those particular aspects of this cruising lifestyle. Two songs in particular are my favorites. The song that "made" me purchase this CD --- "Dont Make Me Dock", since we just bought our sailboat and have had a few "docking errors" but other than that we dont have many other "real problems"....and "Sailing On", somewhat sad -- but since I was diagnosed with ovarian cancer shortly after we purchased our boat(but have a good outlook!), I can relate with not giving up on what your true passions are...Thanks Eileen! Hope to see you "live" someday

    From puns to sweet melodies, Eileen has done it again . . . I am planning to make myself a "Best of Eileen" cd, and I think lots of these will make their way onto that disc - my favorite has to be "Cruising Too Long", although "Anchor Lights" finds me wistfully gazing into the traffic on work mornings. One of these days we'll be back in the real world (the cruising world) once again, living those songs. For now, listening is the next best thing!

    From the first song about the fear of docking the boat that made me laugh I knew this album was going to be another winner! I do enjoy the mellow, almost meloncholy mood the song Anchor Lights gives me as I remember so many nights heading out to the boat. Where Have All The Pirates Gone really strikes home as so many sailors I knew are now sailing their bar stools and braving waves of beer. The song Sailing On hits close to home for those of us dealing with cancer. The funny songs Going Home and Shellfish Man really make me smile. Very enjoyable album !!!

    As usual, Eileen Quinn has delivered a wonderful collection of songs on her new CD. After having met her, and listened to her live at the St. Petersburg sail show, I look forward to each new CD she records. She seems to pick out the quirks and highlights of the sailing lifestyle and put them to music for us to enjoy. I hope she continues to write and record and I look forward to seeing her at the Annapolis sail show next month. Thanks for the entertainment!
