notes
Quickdraw String Band's "Blasting Caps" is a welcome addition to the traditional music cannon, and makes for a fine addition to any acoustic music lover's library. And the packaging too, is lovingly crafted, fed one-by-one through an old letterpress printer.
Experienced and hard working, Quickdraw has been performing around Washington State, USA, for the past four years. August 2005 saw the release of Quickdraw's debut CD release, Blasting Caps. Their energetic approach and innovative interpretations, vocally and instrumentally, make it obvious to see how Quickdraw has become one of the most popular acts around Whatcom County, Washington. Very unique in their adaptions of various acoustic genres, Quickdraw is not old timey or bluegrass, sometimes ragtime, country blues, and folk, and can either play the type of songs to stomp on the dancefloor to, or those perfect for crying in your beer. Their style often defies categorization into any singular acoustic genre, but is definitely solidly grounded in acoustic tradition. This is exactly what makes them completely unique. Goldtooth often states that nobody else is doing what Quickdraw is doing musically in Whatcom County, and if they are, "they ain't doing it quite like us." It is the strong and varying backgrounds of all four members that make the combination so intriguing and distinct.
Currently Quickdraw consists of Dave Maguire, Kat Bula, Matt Novak, and Robert "Goldtooth" Ray. Dave has played in Cajun and Punk-influenced bands in the past, and recently played a stint with the local Bellingham bluegrass band, "Feed and Seed." Kat grew up playing the violin, and currently has her hand in various band projects, such as Pirates R Us, Feed and Seed, and Caved-In Trio. Matt, schooled in the piano as a teenager, transferred to the guitar and learned well how to drive a fiddle tune as well as write and support a song, which has earned him a name as a solo act, self-producing two solo recordings. Goldtooth, though strongly schooled and raised in Appalachian tradition, brings a strong blues and swing influence to the table, and is the frontman for local Bellingham swing band, Goldtooth Deluxe, as well as bass player for local Bellingham band, Pirates R Us.
This band is as endearing as they are energetic, as adaptive as they are consistent. Their style has seen some change over a four-year period, and to take home a piece of where they were in the summer of 2005, pick up this album. You'll love it, we swear.
