QUEEN GODIS - (pron: kwen-god-iz)

ABOUT THE ARTIST:

Born and raised in Brooklyn, NY, Queen God-Is one of the most gifted, lyrically insightful, thought provoking, and dynamic spoken word artists of our time. Her gifts however, extend way beyond the realm of poetry. Her debut album, Power U! , highlights Queen as co-producer, budding engineer, MC, and singer who hooks up both lead and background vocals with her awe-inspiring sense of melody and harmony.

Her work incorporates Hip Hop, soul, rock and even some theater- bringing forth a powerfully unique energy that wows crowds of every demographic. An entertainer, seeker and conveyor of truth, her socially conscientious yet accessible lyrics (from the hood to the burbs, projects to penthouse) invoke chills and undeniably leave you changed.

Touching an array of audiences, GodIs showcases at venues that range from public schools and cozy cafes, to huge concert and university lecture halls both nationally and abroad. She has and continues to grace the stage with some of the top artists of our lifetime. Even more significantly, she dedicates a great portion of her time empowering youth all over the world with her work.

In 2001, Queen was hand selected to appear as feature performance poet on part of Les Nubians' (Afro-European singing duo) international tour route. Her work also appears on two tracks on the album: Les Nubians Presents Echoes: Chapter One Nubian Voyager - released in the Fall of 2005. Rave reviews inspired the label to re-release this record as a poetry book with CD in the summer of 2006.

ABOUT THE ALBUM:
(FULL LENGTH ALBUM PLUS MINI-CHAPBOOK WITH ARTWORK...WELL WORTH YOUR HARD..OR EASILY EARNED MONEY...)

Perhaps womanHood is as a landscape. If so, the album Power U! is a wonderful journey through its diverse "terrains." Queen delivers raw imagery that brings to light fresh revelations about society and its relationship to the female body. Witty and intelligent, yet boldly honest, her mission is to use the “beautiful struggle” of womanhood to help us reexamine how we view ourselves, our communities and our relationships.

In her own words: “Power U!” is a multi-medium journey through the sacred feminine (mountains, peaks and valleys - complete with flood and drought). It is a never-ending poem and an open love letter to self. It is bold, beautiful and honest! Each track started out as a poetic statement connected by theme and vision. Later, through a series of lessons and experiences communicated to me how they would best be conveyed. The result: song, rhyme, spoken word, story and more singing...It is a reflection, a resurrection, a revelation. It is raw...The vocals, structure and ideas are as “Lioness” - wild, fierce, untrained and untamed. It is in-tune, timely, and moving. It induces goosebumps (even for me). It is HIP and POWERFUL work!”

On this powerful album, Queen navigates a hip yet humble path through the 'ugly' to guide us back to the beautiful -a journey that millions of people all over the world (regardless of race, class, faith and gender) face everyday.

  • the best album in years
    author: gina vernon

5 stars? that's it? she deserves all of the stars in the sky. she is a very talented young lady. she is a poet, singer, and raps very positive . how many people can be so versatile? she takes your mind to a higher level of thinking. each song on the album is truly a great listen. her subject matter is what everyone NEEDS to hear. there is no skipping tracks here. production work is great. everything about this album is exceptional. she is what maya angelou calls a phenominal woman. my anticipation for the next album is through the roof. she is truly an inspiration to those who seek wisdom.

  • Unique and truly talented

I first found out about Queen GodIS on myspace and her name sparked my curiousity. So I listened and read about her and decided I am going to take a chance and get her cd's (I got two) and I was very pleased. Not only does she have a beautiful deep and soulful voice, she lets her passions and individualtity shine in her songs. Some of the "songs" are more like lyrical plays on words and there are many allusions present in the album too--Its also a very personal album for her too, I believe she put her child's voice on the album? She's a storyteller, and inspires the listener to listen more deeply in life. Being a singer and artist myself, She's inspiring to me because of her courage and strength she displays and also her vulnerability, in songs that she sings about love. such a double edged sword. Well, Im gonna keep this review short...oh I might add, the music is also very good on the album, and my boyfriend who is a very talented musician and snob when it comes to music said he liked it a lot. He's from Chicago and wanted to hear her and Common together. hehehe Aloha

queen godis comes through in this cd, you can feel the power her live performances provide...the nuances and details are light and lovely, and as always, her voice and words give hope, and the space for the listener to be strong too. Gina, VA is my favorite right now, but it's the kind of cd that will give me multiple favorites.

  • Why I LOVE this CD
    author: Lesliayn

I love it cause it's not simple. I can hear it over & over & still be deciphering the lyrics. Mid Section 8 stays in my head, Our Father is beautiful (almost makes me cry) & Alive is probably my favorite. All the songs are significant in their own way, production is great. Power U is powerful, much love to this sister.

  • Worth the Wait!!!!
    author: Angelique R.

I remember seeing Queen GodIs performing in Brooklyn, freestyling spoken word and getting so into it....it was powerful...and I never forgot her name or her presence. I checked in record stores every couple of months to see if she had dropped...but there was nothing. Now, that I finally have her album...it was definitely worth the wait and she is just as powerful and life-changing as I remember. Excellent work....I am honored to say I am her fan!

  • A refreshing break from the nonsense other females bring to hip hop!
    author: Raquel V

Each track brings something for everyone to enjoy. Extremely powerful on all levels of music and femininity. This CD will make you want to dance. Yet still gives it's listeners something insightful to think about. Definitely worth more than 5 stars!

  • "Power U" is definately a big and blessed hit!
    author: Beloved

what can I say but that "Power U" is definately a big and blessed hit! Everything so well said and/or sung and the beats are EXCELLENT (off da' hook!) Queen Godis has got skillz, and with this album, she has proven her right to be in this game! "Power U" is definately worth every (single, last)penny! In closing what can I say but "Power U" "B Girl" "Apple" "I Love U!" "Mid- Section 8" "Our Father" (tears, tears, tears...wow)and "seXXy" YES!!! If I HAD to pick a fave I'd say "I love You..." (and "Mid-Section 8" and "seXXy" ;) but that would only be if you MADE me pick. "Power U" is a complete session filled with all the ups and downs of being a human being a woman (or loving a human being a woman), and so all parts are necessary to leave you feeling completely fulfilled and overstood. Keep on doing your thang Queen Godis!!...Jah guides, Beloved

  • Smooth melodic grooves and powerful lyrics!
    author: Substantial

Many artists have tried and failed to make an album that could potentially change someone's life. It's amazing that Queen GodIs in her debut release "Power U" has made an album that is truly that inspiring. I remember being a teenager and the older Gods would say... "Don't let the Power U power you", but it is nearly impossible not to be seduced by her smooth melodic grooves and powerful lyrics. This CD is a must have for those who have eagerly awaited an album that is both cohesive and diverse without reaking of effort. All hail the Queen!

  • you can just let it play
    author: msflypretty-d.ray

one of those cd's you can just put on and let it play all the way through, leave you inspired and revived, cant pick a favorite, like mary, lauryn, and erykah all in one

  • I am Very Impressed. This should be played everywhere.
    author: Daddy Tesfa

The cd is great. The music as well as the cd itself. Beautiful cover art with plenty of thought provoking words to read in the insert. A great message for any woman who is struggling with her self image or woman hood. An equally great message for a woman who has self confidence to celebrate her Goddess/ warrior self. As a man. I loved the whole cd.

  • Hey, it helped "Power ME!!"
    author: Janine

The album falls in line with the life and journey of becoming a young woman, "Power U!" is perfect for the younger generation of females who have grown tired of looking up to video vixens as role models as opposed to just models. Hey, it helped "Power ME!!"

  • This album is a real classic
    author: loyal fan

YOU MUST BUY THIS ALBUM. SERIOUSLY. I cannot stop listening to it. The music is so very soulful, but she comes at it so different. Amazing.

  • this album is greater than the sum of its tracks
    author: Daniel

It is unto itself a journey into the soul of a woman: inspiring, funky, fun, vulnerable, powerful, moving. Queen takes the listener on a journey through the many realms that make up this life from the perspective of a sincere traveller. Everything is heartfelt, poetic, soulful and effortlessly beautiful.

  • beautiful!
    author: Mario R. Anton

This is the type of album that can be played in 20 years from now and still be good. The diverse sound within the album matches fantistically with Queen's vocals.

  • ABSOLUTLY REFRESHING ARTIST, REPRESENTING FOR QUEENS!
    author: Alicia Boone

This album moved me from the very start, with its hip hop, sol, rock and spoken word. This is one of the REAL artists of the year and this Indie artist needs to be in a position to share her light, love and intelligent art with the world!

  • Certified Classic a Must Buy!
    author: DREADOFTRUTH

Power U by Queen GodIs is one of the most complete albums I have heard to date. I attended the album release party not knowing what to expect. I was absolutely blown away by her powerful voice and commanding stage presence she is a Queen in every sense of the word. Power U is a must have! My favorite track is #9 Mid-Section 8 that is a certified classic.

Female R&B singers are a dime a dozen these days, so it's becoming increasingly difficult for truly original artists to stand out from the overly saturated crowd. Starting with her name, this songstress is well on her way to setting herself apart from her pop-dependent peers. With a distinct vocal style that alternates easily from hip-hop to soul and lead to background, this quickly becomes a musical journey, a narrative road trip of R&B style from a woman with a penchant for storytelling. Embracing her feminism, it's clear that she is strong but not dangerous, soft but not submissive. If you love the purest parts of Lauryn Hill but secretly wish she would make a record with Andre 3000, it won't be hard for you to embrace this record for both its straight forward soul aspects and the abstract hip hop angles that it delves into flawlessly.

  • Power U ....Classic
    author: Israel

I recently purchased the Cd "Power U" from the artist Queen Godis from Brooklyn New York and I feel as if I found a hidden treasure. For the price of the Cd I received so many styles that it just blew me away. It came in the mail to me right before I was headed on a road trip to Atlanta and it made my ride even better. I have not listened to a female artist in the Hip-Hop genre that has moved me this way since Lauren Hill, and I'm so sincere. But still "Power U" is much more than Hip-Hop, Its Progressive, its Rock, its Pop, Spoken Word, its R&B, its the Truth. I felt the way I did when I listened to Nas's "Illmatic" for the first time, you just know when your listening to a classic. I played the CD for my co-workers and the track "Our Father" made one of them cry, and this is a grown man!! It was then I really knew that this CD needs to be recognized locally, nationally, and internationally.

  • INSPRATION...even for the hardcore!

  • TIMELESS!

I'ma listen to this again in 5 and 10 years and still have revelations, nod my head and be moved. Dope!

  • PHENOMENAL!
    author: Sara D

I listened to this work and was healed...I shall listen again and be healed everytime...plus inspired to share the healing. Queen is blessed, gifted and beautiful. Her words are bodacious. Her power unparalleled. Fierce. Bold. my vocab 'don't' stretch far and wide enough...

  • A powerful record that lets everybody know that real music is still out there.
    author: Ian

What an amazing record from start to finish, musically, lyrically, and vocally. The vocals are so sensual that they draw you into each song, and make it easy and pleasing to really listen to the lyrics. This record will be in regular rotation in my CD player. Don't pass this one up!

  • This album is the best Ive heard this year, last year and the year before that!
    author: Akintola Hanif

This is the best, most well rounded album to come out in a minute(maybe forever) One of the only albums I own that I can listen to from start to finsh. It is a timeless masterpiece. The work of a true genius... Cop that!!!
