As the name suggests, The Pyrates Royale play "pirate music," a genre that was undefined until they started performing as THE original pirate singing group in 1987.
What IS "pirate music" exactly? No historic documentation exists to prove that pirates sang at all. So the founders of this group started with the kind of music that appealed to them as sailors and reenactors: sea chanties, English pub songs, and the occasional mauldin Irish ballad to break things up a bit.
Now armed with guitar, hammered dulcimer, bodhran, fiddle and concertina, as well as a hearty chorus of hale and harmonious voices, the group has expanded its repertoire to include instrumental tunes, original songs, Gaelic lyrics, our hero Tom Lewis and even a madrigal or two. However, the crew has never strayed too far from its original purpose: to make people laugh as well as sing along. Maybe someday they'll stop throwing things. Here's hoping.
After more than 18 years of noise pollution, money-grubbing and public delinquency masquerading as entertainment, The Pyrates Royale is one of the most popular music groups to ever sully taverns and stages at music festivals up and down the East coast. The crew performs at renaissance, maritime, celtic, folk music and pirate festivals; ship excursions, private and corporate parties -- even weddings. (who knew?) Always fun
author: Sarah WadeThis album is a fun, eclectic mixture of traditional sea shanties and a few songs (like Simple Gits and Sally Racket) that have been changed slightly to fit into the Pyrates' inimitable style of funny, off-color ballads that simply demand that you sing along. The best song, though, is "The Brigantine", an eerie ballad about a ghost ship, written by Janie Meneely, which really deserves to become a classic shanty. Altogether, a great mixture of the traditional and the semi-traditional. Wonderful as always, the Pyrates Royale are my favorite band to listen to whenever I'm out on the water.

The tracks feature a wide variety of styles and highlights each of the group's unique talents. Pyrates Royale are indeed the original, and best Pyrate band.

Fun, solid, creative!

Definitely a solid representation of the crew's fun and sometimes surprising repertoir. The musicality is particularly high on this (their fourth) album, and it showcases the crew's creative way of weaving an entire world with their music and drawing the listener into the atmosphere of the CD. A great romp, highly recommended!
