The world's most recorded drummer assembled a teaching DVD in live settings in Japan opening with a James Brown medley comprising Sex Machine, It's A Man's World, and Cold Sweat, then slipping in to the bluesy Back In Love Again, showing a close-up look at how Purdie pulls punches and 'ghost' notes on the snare drum that adds up to a very fine and funky feel.
On stage with his band, Purdie digs in Latin-style. This is groovin' and coolin' stuff that is fun and funky, when he moves into a New Orleans groove in a master class setting, he lets the feel shuffle along all greasy and slippery before sliding into a solo around that groovy feel. When it's 'Funk Time', Purdie lays it out before digging into another solo. There you'll see his 12/8 in action and get a great demonstration of 'The Purdie Shuffle' the patented Purdie groove drummers drool over.
NOW YOU can see how it is done....the real thing up close.
The song Groovelation is the background music played throughout the DVD during interviews, technical explanations, etc. It's also played in full with an ten piece band featuring Rob Paparozzi, Harmonica & Vocals, Roy Bennett, Bass & Vocals, Chizuko Uoshihiro, Keyboard, Shinju Shiotsugu, Guitar, Joe Kirk, Guitar, Shigeo Funchino, Sax, Masahiko Sugasaka, Trumpet, Yozo Kataoka, Trombone, Kotalo Asayama, Percussion.
Get a close-up of Purdie's bass drum and hi-hat action...it's all important stuff that will benefit any drummer's playing. Purdie also reminds us that his drumming includes a lot of cymbal work, so he reveals his setup and what his sound is all about. The finale takes places in a temple in Kurume, Japan with Body Percussion Kids demonstrating rhythm in motion while accompanied by master drummer Toshiyuki Yamada on the Taiko Drum and Bernard Purdie on accoustic drums.
