notes
Following the release of Paul Spencer’s 2005 debut, “The Whole Shebang” ("A promising debut album - Spencer infuses his meaty, Cheap Trick / Heartbreakers-like garage / power-pop with thick catchy riffs, and a scratchy, bluesy voice which alternately recalls Elvis Costello, Paul Westerberg and The New York Dolls’ David Johansen...the songs are solid and Spencer's enthusiasm remains unchecked throughout the album.” - Mark Suppanz, The Big Takeover)
2007's “Cut The Jive” builds on the promise of that record, bringing the power-pop elements to the forefront and infusing the songs with hooks galore (The Raspberries and Cheap Trick come to mind), without ever losing a wild punk edge that owes a lot to bands like The Clash, The New York Dolls and seminal post-punkers The Replacements.
Backed by The Maxines (name which right at first glance recalls The NY Dolls’ sleaze), the CT based Spencer seems to have found in the swagger of The Maxines the perfect vehicle to deliver his highly charged brand of rock & roll, full of power chords, sticky melodies and clever lyrics (“I’ll be at the bar drinking myself sober / But there’s now way I’m gonna avoid the hangover”, warns the take-no-prisoners opening track, “No Regrets”)
"Bolt Of Lightning", true to its name, blasts out of the speakers next: a song about a punk rock girl who digs The Damned, it succeeds with its luscious harmonies, lightning solo and start-stop dynamics (courtesy of the solid-as-a-rock Maxines drummer, Bobby Soares). It also introduces the listener to the unifying subject of the album - the System ("You wanna shake the System / You wanna give it one good earthquake / So every brand new day / Brings a new hair color and a new set of rules to break")
"Ain't Nobody (Gonna Tell Me What To Do)" maintains the rebellious mood in a vicious riff, a bouncy chorus with catchy "woooo-hoooo!"s, a juicy twin-guitar solo that recalls Thin Lizzy, and some very defiant lyrics ("It's genetically built into my DNA / Until my 6 feet of earth claim it one day / People hear what they see, but can you really see me? / Go feed the Machine, waste no time on me"). The listener is treated at the end to a restart / coda filled with some gorgeous background harmonies that recall Big Star, The Raspberries, Badfinger.
"Today Is The Day" kicks in with an anthemic fury, best expressed in its lyrics: "Because you only regret the things that you don't do / And when you live by the rules / the System is bound to get to you!". Sonically, it invokes The Replacements circa "Tim", and it features a(nother) blistering solo from The Maxines' lead guitarist Danny Soares.
"T.L.M.E.Y." - the initials being nothing more than a jokey take on the song's chorus - comes across as Ramones style punk but with a Kinks sensibility, which makes for a sticky-as-glue melody; it's the kind of infectious tune that lodges itself in one's brain and stays there. Full of the same beautiful background harmonies supplied throughout the album by The Maxines' bassist, Mark Soares (who also created the provocative album cover), "T.L.M.E.Y." is pure power-pop.
"Shake Off" announces itself with a boozed-up shout from Paul Spencer ("Sing when you win, booze when you lose!") that would make Bon Scott proud. The song features a powerful riff coupled with a feverish, funky cowbell and a barrage of "La-La-La-La-La"s straight out of The Who's workbook. Lyrically, it is pure barbed wire while being funny at the same time; it contains some of Spencer's best lines: "She was a czech, I was her mate / Ain't life ironic? Call it fate", and "Burning the chaff, smoking the weed / And punching the clock until it bleeds", just to mention a few examples. The whole song is a lyrical tour-de-force with a swaggering solo to boot and a rhythm section that just won't let loose.
Next comes "Don't Put Me Down" strolling by with its Stones-y riff, shifting fast-slow-fast dynamics, quirky background vocals and a rippin' solo that sounds like pure Keith Richards. The whole song has a punkish 'going-off-the-rails-at-any-moment' feel to it, partially created by the pumpin' piano in the background & the jealousy theme, which nevertheless is counter-balanced for comic relief by lines such as, "Girl, you can't say I never tried / It will be hard to wave goodbye / Specially in handcuffs / With broken bones and stuff".
The title track follows right way, and at a mere 1:10, it's one hell of a ride. Opening with a delirious, 'taking the piss', radio-like jingle, it quickly kicks into full punk mode, but with a twist - with its rollercoaster piano in the forefront, it sounds like Jerry Lee Lewis fronting the Ramones. With Paul Opalach providing the pumpin' piano, "Cut The Jive" sounds like a barely contained riot ("Smash the bottle, go full throttle / Kick the stool, spin & wobble"). It reminds us how much 50's rock & roll (Jerry Lee Lewis, Gene Vincent, Eddie Cochran, etc) has, in terms of spirit & rawness, lots in common with the late 70's punk exemplified in bands like The Clash, The Damned, The Sex Pistols, etc.
"24 Hour Non-Stop Perfect Waste Of Time" arrives next with hooks & handclaps galore. Opening with a crunching Cheap Trick-like guitar sound and the typical, clever word play you've come to expect from Spencer ("Well you took a bad joke / And you made it kind of funny / You wrote your number on the wall / And made a meal out of my money"), the tune is genuine power-pop bliss, oozing gorgeous' "Aaaahaaa"s and a catchy as hell chorus that can lead a listener to pressing that 'play' button over & over again.
The record closes with the sweet & mellow acoustic pop of "Alcohol, Cigarettes & Coffee". With a sound that conjures up The Shins, like an outtake from "Oh, Inverted World", "Alcohol, Cigarettes & Coffee" fully displays the range that Paul Spencer and The Maxines possess and their knack for writing and playing damn catchy tunes.
Expertly produced by Paul Opalach (who, with ease, brings out the power-pop elements of the band while retaining a raw-as-sushi punk edge), and skillfully mastered at NYC's legendary Frankford Wayne by Duncan Stanbury, "Cut The Jive" is one hell of a sophomore release for an indie band.
I think it was George Bernard Shaw who once said, “Hell is full of musical amateurs: music is the brandy of the damned”. Though the man could not envision such a thing as rock & roll as ‘the’ music he had in mind, one would be hard pressed to find a better definition of it; rock & roll is indeed the brandy of the damned, and at its best, it is loud, raw & exhilarating. “Cut The Jive” exudes all those elements and leaves the listener wanting more...lots more.
The only 'problem' is that Paul Spencer & The Maxines sound less like musical amateurs and more like wild, skillful rockers that promise even greater things to come...and what a good type of ‘problem’ that is to have.

THE BIG TAKEOVER (Issue 61, Dec.'07):
'Adrenaline-fueled rock the way you like it'
"This is the second album for CT-based rocker Spencer, following 2005's 'The Whole Shebang', his backing band now credited as The Maxines. From the first track, the chugging, propulsive "No Regrets", it's clearly apparent that the band has gelled nicely. Bobby and Mark Soares form a potent rhythm section, effortlessly alternating the tempos throughout, with Spencer and Danny Soares providing thick and meaty guitar licks (producer Paul Opalach gives the LP a raw edge, and contributes rapid-fire, Jerry Lee Lewis-like piano trilling on the title track). Further, Spencer has that perfect rock 'n' roll voice: gruff and abrasive like David Johansen and Paul Westerberg, with loads of Mick Jagger-like swagger. Recalling The Replacements and Heartbreakers, with bits of Stooges and Misfits, this is adrenaline-fueled rock the way you like it." - Mark Suppanz, The Big Takeover

Alcohol fueled jamming!
author: JonTake the raw energy from proto-punk acts like Iggy and the Stooges and the NY Dolls, pair it with a throbbing crunch of rhythm guitar, hang it from some killer lead riffs ala The 'Stones, then throw some 3-deep backup harmonies in and you're only beginning to scratch up a description. Be sure to catch my favorite at Track 7: Don't Put Me Down
first impessions last for me
author: james aka dodger mckennaall and all paul is working hard the clash influence will sway a british audience. there is a sneaky chunck of brian wilson too. track 5 T.L.M.E.Y i like very much give this guy a listen . he reached me and i am in glasgow scotland
Brilliant Balls-Out R+R
author: Rich K - WPKN-FM in Bridgeport CTPaul leads his Maxines through chunky slabs of thrumming guitars with a brio and elan that is the perfect counterpoint to the intentionally primitive nature of this recording. Spencer has lots of solid sonic ideas - there are hooks galore, hot riffs and balls-out self-assurance that propell these simple-on-the-surface rockers into the realm of musical profundity. Don't go here seeking subtlety - but if you're ready for a hot neo-punk party - this is the place. --- Off-Beat New Music Review
keeping the vibe alive into the future and beyond
author: dave kal birmingham englandafter talking with paul on the internet ... he was polite and full of energy for his band ...after listening to his latest offering i can only say that anybody who is in to good music ( johnny thunders & the heartbreakers , lords of the new church , the damned , and jeff buckley ) to name a few will not be dissapointed . dont get me wrong they have some class influences but it is them that make the music sound as cool as it does . i would happily put this in my collection and tell my mates about it ! go on buy the cd people of the world respect dave kal birmingham england . www.myspace.com/thatsentertainment67
the clash, the pistols the crunchy Steve Jones giutar, the dolls; shake it all u
author: eugenio from ItalyWell the Cut The Jive project is a mix of rough punk stuff and a little bit of pure rock & roll all well balanced. You have to love the pistols Today Is The Day you have to love the clash Don't Put Me Down to like it and the new york dolls . You can tell Paul has in mind some Cheap Trick also but to me the arrangements of the edgy punk is evident. Bolt Of Lightning my favorite listen to see it what I mean Steve Jones guitar is there! Hey Paul should not have listened to all these scums boy!!!!!! Enjoy it
The Killers, Kaiser Chiefs u.a. zeigen. Songs wie Ain’t Nobody, No Regrets, Today’s the Day, Don’t Put me Down machen an einen nicht nur an, wenn die Autobahn frei ist ...
Classic sounding, power pop rock' n roll
author: Rick WoodwardPaul keeps the spirit of rock 'n roll alive on his new CD Cut the Jive. The independent artist kicks out the jams with songs that harkens back to some of rock's greatest interpreters like Ray Davies and the Kinks or Jim Carroll, a New York poet and musician. Frankly, to be fair, Paul is simply continuing the age-old tradition of taking the influences of the past and integrating his unique style to create something that is all his own.
Infectious Fun, and Brimming With Punk Fury
author: bargain_bassistI love it-- Meaty rhythms, raw electric guitars, a sound reminiscent of Replacements (the most obvious influence, and a band I love), but also NY Dolls and Cheap Track. The harmonies are a cool touch, as well-- a unique vocal blend definitely from a place other than those aforementioned influences (except for maybe the title track's Beach Boys-like harmonies). "Today Is the Day" is the penultimate power pop song, brimming with punk fury. The infectious guitar riff in "Don't Put Me Down" sets up the listener for a frayed, Westerberg-esque caterwaul. A bonus to the striking sound of the songs if the reckless, joyous abandon with which they are performed.
Good old honest Rock n' Roll.
author: Tony, ManchesterGreat album , no filler. Takes me back too far to want to admit. Stand out tracks from a whole bunch of greats are 24hr non stop perfect waste of time & today is the day. The 70's punk influences are all there, The great Chris Spedding, Glen Matlock and the Vibrators are in here. Keep up the good work Paul.
Good, honest, raw
author: JoseCut the Jive does just that--it cuts out all the fluff, all the stuff that doesn't matter and leaves just the essence of Rock 'n' Roll. Like the best rock, it's not clean and it certainly doesn't feel healthy -- after listening to this record, you'll feel like you've smoked two packs of cigarettes and downed an entire fifth of bourbon in a little over half an hour. But once the hangover's gone, you'll be putting this record on again. Though, of course, many of you won't bother to wait for that hangover to go away. (And, OK, yeah, Paul Spencer and the Maxines' Cut the Jive will work for all you non-smoking, non-drinking folks too!)Cheers.
If you like your rock straight from the heart listen to this album!
author: PeteTheBeatFrom the opening riffs of No Regrets that echo Springsteen's No Surrender, this album wears its influences on its sleeve without any pretence - just good honest rock'n'roll. No Regrets sets the scene and the rest of the album upholds the standard. Standout tracks include Today is the day, Don't put me down, Shake off, Alcohol, cigarettes & coffee and the aforementioned No Regrets. Influences that can be heard include The Ramones, Little Steven, The Kinks & The Yardbirds. Interestingly as an Aussie I agree with one of the earlier reviews that the sound at times reminds me also of an 80's Aussie rock band called The Angels and even perhaps the Aussie punk rockers The Saints. An album that has gone straight to my iPod and is quickly adding to its play count! Highly recommended!! Cheers PeteTheBeat Melbourne, Australia
Good work!
author: Lex TalionisHere it is, Paul Spencer's 2 nd album. But now Paul is not alone, his band, called the Maxines, delivers strong support. Listening to first Paul's brainchild I felt much more comfortable with his rock side, and I've expressed my wish for his further musical efforts. What can we hear now? Well, maybe Paul hasn't become DARKTHRONE follower nor a disciple of the ultimate void, but "Cut the Jive" is filled with dynamic rock'n'roll tracks, with much less ballads or simillar stuff. brings no revolution in Paul's musical world, it's still old school garage rock/pop, rooted back in 60/70's, with some punk influences and maybe even hard rock echoes (don't the riffs sometime resemble AC/DC?) But who needs revolutions? We also need some conservative values and followers of tradition, even if it's only rock'n'roll, not Tradition in Evolian perspective. I'd like to praise again Paul and the Maximes for one thing: their music has it's roots and sources of inspiration, but it's definitely not a copy. In songwriting, playing the instruments - they have their own style. Favourite tracks: "Today is the day", really great one (maybe the title indicates another potential source of inspiration, the pre-Mastodon band). And title song - very nice, psychodelic, but - why is it so short? This is another path to follow... Who knows, maybe next time. Keep rockin' friends!
This cd is a perfect example of punk rock fire
author: greg in pensacola, flThis cd rocks from the first note to the last. It is a perfect example of punk rock fire badly needed for this genre. I was sure punk rock was heading for extinction before I heard this cd. Thanks to Paul Spencer & The Maxines for bringing the fire back! Run don't walk to get your copy of this cd!
Great album Paul
author: JanneI like this album a lot, some songs get in my head the first time I heard it. No Regrets, Ain't Nobody, and the rest have come along. That's the way music shall work!!!
Coming back to CBGB!!
author: Claudio (a spaniard in Paris)Yes, Paul Spencer strikes back! And if his first record was full of excellent promises, the second one is a very good reallity, well-finish but keeping this "in the raw" sound from CBGB's punk-rock from the end of the seventies ,specially the second part of the album (Shake off is a real classic hit, guys!) . I strongly recommend this album to everybody who loves good and honesty rock&roll-punk-in-your-fucking-face-oh-yeah! The soul of the "Thunder" is not dead! Congratulations and thanks for this album Paul!
Retro Rock At It's Best
author: Trevor KnightsmithMy last review was removed for some reason, not a good move guys as there was nothing offensive about it. Anyhow of the top of my head Cut The Jive is an excellent album in true rocking fashion from start to finish. It has elements of the Clash and also some Johhny Marr type guitar playing. Both my children love the album and so do their friends, and Have not heard one person who does not like it. I highly recommend this album as it is fun from start to finish .Paul and his band are also someone i would like to see live. Do so if you can
sounds of the past
author: nikiI tend to hate all of the bullshit music coming out now a days. I lost hope in artists abilities to create anything even semi-decent but this CD reminds me of some of my favorite CD's and artist with tracks like Today Is The Day and 24 Hour Non-Stop Perfect Waste Of Time, prove that good music didn’t die. It was just hiding.
No Regrets
author: joanvirago HollandThis is just the album you've been waiting for. Honest rock that takes you back to the time of Herman Brood. Good rock&roll music with lyrics that say what's all about. I enjoy it every time and recommend it to everybody, at least give it a try,I'm sure you will like it just as I did. Herman could not do it better.
This album has to deserve more regards!
author: MarcelPaul Spencer and the Maxines??? Have you ever heard this name? No? I haven`t heard of them before,too...but the album "Cut the jive" is very great! In my opinion it reminds of the best days of 77 UK-Punkrock and early 80s Emo-Punk like Rites Of Spring and Hüsker Dü! It`s a very varied album with rockin, catchy melodies! My favourite songs are "No regrets", "Today is the day" and "24 hour non-stop perfect waste of time" (the choir will bring you to heaven!!!) and they can`t leave my head anymore! :-) Great songs in a rough and powerful style... 2 songs are mixed with a piano that makes a high spirit and will cause you to go to the next pub :-) All in all it`s a self-contained album which reminds of the just-called bands but it`s NO copy! Buy or die! Greetings from Germany :-)
Great old school rockin cd
author: Dom, WalesGot to listen to the cd because of the influences and boy I wasn't dissapointed. from the opening track no regret with its blondie like woo ahhs and raw riff you know what your going to get. If you like the heartbreakers and Richard Hell then this cd is for you. SOme great catchy choruses and attention to detail. highlight for me are, TLMEY and theres a great swagger about the track bolt of lightning and carries on with shake off. An album that would accompany any self respecting collection of good indie/old school punk music. What are you waiting for give it a spin today. I am over here in rainy and wet Wales, am I'm playing it again and again.UK
Great album, reminds me to Herman Brood
author: LaasReally great album and did remind me straight away to Herman Brood, best tracks in my opinion are No Regrets and Cut The Jive. Greetings from the Netherlands [Holland]
Simply amazing :)
author: BrentI'm a fan in Florida, and I would just like to say that I love this album! Paul Spencer and the Maxines did an awesome job! No Regrets has a certain sound to it that just makes you want to get up and rock out. If you like Indie artists, or just rock in general, then buy this CD!
An excellent album to move to
author: RhondaI'm from the land down under,AKA Australia...I heard about Pauls album from a friend so I decided to purchase it and have a listen....it reminded me of an Aussie band from the late 70's early 80's over here called The Angels and I was a big fan of theirs. Pauls album is one Id call an upbeat feel good album...when I listen to it I find hrs later Im still singing some of the songs to myself....have a listen and see how awsome it is.
- author: Daz
Paul returns with an album of no-nonsense power. This time out with the Maxines, the result is more polished,(now with added harmony vocals !!) but it still retains the punch of UK Punk circa 1977-8, and does n`t take itself too seriously.I`d love to see them live.
a sound you´ve probably never heard before
author: VP of ROCK N ROLLWhen you listen to this album the first thing you will notice is a freshness of a sound you´ve probably never heard before but because it´s just the enthusiastic sound of Pauls Spencer & the Maxines. You will hear influences of Iggy / Jason & The Scorchers / Ramones with catchy riffs and sometimes background harmonies that even create a Rubettes sound once in a while. Play this album loud in your car, at home or where ever you are. I would love to see this band Alive and party with them all night… The songs on this album: "No regrets" start with a Rubettes type of intro but you get a real Rock ´n Roll wave all over you…. "Bolt Of Lightning", a song about a punk rock girl with a great guitar as a wall of sound supported by a great drummer and background choir…..…….. "Ain't Nobody (Gonna Tell Me What To Do)" makes you just wanna move and get on the dance floor…a great partysong….. "Today Is The Day" especially when you play this album…..there is no place left to hide……. "T.L.M.E.Y." is bulldozering all over you…don´t drive to fast now…... "Shake Off" is a real lalalalalalala song with a great rhythm……. "Don't Put Me Down" is pure sixties garage rock with a glass cutting guitar and heavy harmonies…… "Cut The Jive" title song, piano, high speed, just 1 minute of pure rock n roll "24 Hour Non-Stop Perfect Waste Of Time" reminds me of somebody who was my favourite waste of time, which is certainly not valid for this album.. really great song which I probably like the most "Alcohol, Cigarettes & Coffee" is probably the song you need after listening to the other songs….. turn on your lighters…probably their favourite encore song….as it would be mine… So buy this album…..!!!!!!!!! VP of Rock N Roll from The Netherlands
Fresh Rock 'n' Roll - the way it should be!!!!
author: Tony M - Melbourne AustraliaPaul Spencer and the Maxines have outdone themselves. Of what I assume to be an independant recording comes a masterful batch of songs and performance that rivals contemporaries like the New York Dolls and post punk bands like Radio Birdman and The Hitmen. From the surf rock influenced opener No Regrets through to the end track ballad Alcohol, Cigarettes & Coffee, finally a CD that encaptulates the last 2 decades of hit and miss rock and packs it into a blast of high energy rock 'n' roll the way it should be. Listen to it once, twice, and let the music be your master. 5 stars from Australia.
Cool rock album with sparkling fresh sound
author: DaCooLRoBA great album, with good guitars, drums and an awesome voice that makes me think of Graham Parker. Nice background vocals too! My favourite songs are Cut the jive, No regrets and Today is the day. DaCooLRoB from the Netherlands
I believe the exact scientific term is 'damn good'
author: Keir HardieGreetings from Inverness, Scotland - who wrote those notes? They're amazing, they're right on the nose and so detailed, I don't think there was one thing in them I didn't agree with, this album is simply damn good, pretty much everything I could say is there in the notes, Paul is great at doing stuff in this style, and it's a style that never gets old, and his new band and producer are both perfect for it, nuanced and raw as appropriate. Stand-out track - whichever one is playing at the time. Only thing I can add is another reference point, The Boomtown Rats' eponymous debut from 1978, particularly the tracks Neon Heart and Close As You'll Ever Be.
raw, sleazy &, snotty. feels like back in the cbgb again
author: AlliceDeeich bin ein dj aus hamburg und spiele alle arten von rock musik. ich selbst bevorzuge 60's garage und 70's punk aber ausschliesslich läßt sich das nicht spielen, wenn man eine breite masse an leuten zufriedenstellen möchte. heute habe ich das neue album von paul spencer "cut the jive" in die hand gedrückt bekommen und mann war ich überrascht und erfreut über die scheibe. das ist genau die art von musik, die ich hören möchte. roh, rotzig und mit einer guten portion punk-rock-attitüde. sie erinnert mich an einige bands, die im cbgb's groß geworden sind (ramones, richard hell, johnny thunders, new york dolls,....) die scheibe ist sehr abwechslungsreich, so findet man auf ihr nicht nur punk-rock-songs (hier gefällt mir besonders song 2 "bolt of lightning")sondern auch schöne ruhige nummern (song 10) oder wie z.b. song nr.6 "shake it off" (mein persönliches lieblingslied) eine coole mink-de-ville-like tanznummer, die dich mit ihrem "cow-bell-feeling" dazu bringt, den arsch zu bewegen. alles in allem ist "cut the jive" eine sehr gelungene scheibe und es bleibt zu hoffen, demnächst mehr von paul & den maxines zu hören oder sie gar mal live zu sehen. keep up the good work. ok. i'll try to translate what i wrote for all you non-germans out there (: please excuse the misspellings and my bad grammar. i'm a dj from hamburg playing all kinds of rock music. my personal favourites though are 60's garage sounds and 70's punk but you can't play only this kind of music when you're trying to satisfy a big crowd of different people. today someone gave me "cut the jive" the new paul spencer album and man was i surprised and happy about it. that's exactly the kind of music i wanna hear. raw, snotty and with a good portion of punk-rock-attitude. it reminded me of many bands which came up in the cbgb's in the 70's (like the ramones, richard hell, johnny thunders, new york dolls,...) the album offers a great variiety.beneath the punkrock (i specially like song 2 "bolt of lightning") you'll find good ballads (song 10) or like song 6 "shake it off" (my personal favourite) a cool mink-de-ville-like butt-shaking dance song which forces you withit's "cow-bell-feeling" to move your ass. this is an awsome record and i hope to hear more of paul spencer & the maxines and maybe someday to see them live around here in germany. keep up the good work.

Johnny Thunders died?
author: Josh from Michigan!I put this album on and laid down to have a good listen, and I'm laying there and I go "Did I fall asleep and wake up in the 70s? Did I put on some Dolls or some Heartbreakers?" and I look and it's none other than Paul and his boys, rocking their hearts out in the best way possible. This is honest, straight from the heart rock and roll, done old school, done RIGHT. Three chords, a steady drumbeat, killer harmonies and some heartfelt lyrics about what we all know (girls, cars, playing in a band, and drinkin!).
1st one fantastic 2nd even better!
author: BengtSweden calling the World. Listen to this, is this guy talented or what? This things is so good that I can't pick out any favorites from it. But listen to T.L.M.E.Y, Today is the day and 24H... I get reminded of all those great late 70's and early 80's bands such as The Outcasts, The Jook, The Jolt and The Young Bucks a.o. They didn't get so many minutes in fames light. But I hope Paul and his buddies keep on the spirit they show here. And that they get the recognition they deservs.
- author: Gilles from Paris France!
Hi! Since yesterday I listen your album. Marvelous one! It's loud like Social Distortion with a little 60's mix sound (garage-punk?). Good punk-rock! "Regret" is a killer introduction track!!! But all others are good... Have a good time. Cheers. Gilles from Paris.
Killer album
author: thunderstruckA friend turned me on to this album, I listened to her praise it so finally gave it a try. She wasn't wrong:) Great stuff. I'm no critic, just know what I like. All the songs are well worth a listen. Money well spent . Good luck

author: Johamn BenninkAs a DJ for local radiostations in the eastern part of Holland I'm always looking for new sounds or old sounds sounding new.Last week I happened to discover the CD "Cut the Jive" by Paul Spencer with the Maxines. Well, it really blew my mind.Good harmonies, great solos and energic rock'n roll....yes that is what rockmusic should be.Never dull a moment. And there ar real life lyrics too. That's a rare thing these days! In my radioprogram I choose to play '' 24 hour non-stop perfect waste of time "with the headphone on. My technician was stunned.Well, that's no wonder if you knew what Im playing normally!!But even so...when the phone kept on ringing in the studio I knew:Paul Spencer could have a local hit near the german border, Holland.Once you make it there Paul:The world lies down on it's knees for you.... Keep on punking!!!!!
Great stuff guys
