Energized Old-time Bluegrass. Street performers by day and dance band by night, The Powder Kegs are putting the 'rock' back into the rocking chair.

notes

Winners of the "People in their Twenties" competition on National Public Radio's 'A Prairie Home Companion.'

The Powder Kegs are an old-time string band from Burlington, Vermont on a mission to re-energize the communication lines between the new generation and its roots. Sam McDougle (fiddle), Dan Maroti (guitar and vocals) and Ryan Dieringer (bass and vocals) first played together in a bluegrass band in high school; when Sam went off to college at Vassar, he met Jake Hoffman (banjo and vocals) and Peter Winne (slide guitar, harmonica, vocals). They formed The Powder Kegs in the winter of 2006, and headed to Burlington the following summer where they worked on a farm for room and board and performed at bars, clubs, and on the street. Their first full-length album, The Seedhouse, released this past winter, was a bestseller on Cdbaby.com in the month of April, 2007. Earlier this spring they were invited to perform live on National Public Radio’s show A Prairie Home Companion as part of its “People in Their 20’s” contest and won. After a street performing tour of the East coast in June, the Kegs settle into permanent residence in the Hudson Valley of New York.

  • Good old-timey music
    author: Vernon Beaty

They have done a good job with pre-bluegrass old-timey music. The only non-authentic feature I noticed is that they do not sing nasally.

  • Music with feeling

JUNE APPLE, of all these excellent tunes, best catches the fiery energy in this CD. Can't get it out of my head, and certainly don't want to.

A mixture of traditional folk songs, country, and original compositions, The Seedhouse keeps the listener excited and dancing from start to finish. It is hard to keep still while this band is playing. The Powder Kegs bring a new life and vitality to a classic style of music. It is both traditional and fresh, with the sounds and feel of bluegrass, country, and rock-n-roll blending seamlessly. Every one of these young musicians is brilliantly talented. My favorite song is "Take Another Shot" written by band member, Ryan D. Can't wait to hear more.

  • Foot-stomping fun for everyone!

The Powder Kegs explode with unstoppable energy in every song of The Seedhouse. You can hear it in the driving rhythm of the fiddle, in every sustained harmonica trill. The Kegs’ youth and vitality seems to burst through the speakers, demanding that we not only listen but get ready: old-time, jug-band, bluegrass music is back, with every ounce of mad determination that it once encompassed. The Kegs give life to history, digging deep into the earliest roots of American music and infusing it with acute rock-n-roll sensibilities. The vocals are at once tight and reckless, at points astonishingly beautiful and other times an unleashing of wild zeal. The range of vocal talents within the band yields a distinctive and creative set of harmonies that carry the album—my favorite is on “Ol’ Riley”, in which nearly all the band members lend their voices. The instrumental skills are equally impressive… check out the fast and vigorously rhythmic “Hard Travelin’” and the colorful “How Come You Do Me Like You Do”. The album is good from start to finish, a testament to the real talent and originality of the Kegs. Get the album—it won’t disappoint.
