notes

She took their cue and left college to immerse herself in the Chicago open-mic music scene.

At age 20, she was working as a bookstore clerk and attending 3 open mics a week. Her voice cracked like an egg in an incubator, even though (or maybe because) there was virtually no one there to notice.

She stayed loyal to the open mic experience for two years before embarking on her first tour, which took her to the Northeast in the winter of 1997.

Within 7 months, she would be invited to play the Newport Folk Festival, winning a slot in the 1998 summer touring Lilith Fair, opening for Shawn Colvin, and receiving a surprise phone call from the Indigo Girls' Amy Ray, who wanted to know if there was anything she could do the help Rose, who's 1997 demo tape had captivated her.

"No one can touch her," Amy would later say, "Rose exists on a level all her own...botanical love songs...dark histories...as holy as a mystic, as profane as your perverted fantasies."

"Anybody" is a collection of her earlier home & studio recordings, compiled by Amy Ray and Rose.

Rykodisc recording artist Andrew Bird makes an appearance with his searing violin on "Molly's Lily," and epic tale of family debt, poison meadows, and the devil; and on "Abalin," a ghostly love story.

The Indigo Girls bring close, beautiful harmonies to "Or," a song of separation. "Look No Hands" highlights the intimate, experimental style of Rose's home recordings and writings, which often bend the ears of gender and sexuality, as on "Olga's Birthday" and "Perihelion."

Poetic muse, songs and tales of life on the edge from a gifted singer/songwriter with an acoustic guitar and a haunting voice. Just finishing up a tour with the Indigo Girls.

  • an inherent congruence of musicianship, lyrical prose and vocals

Anybody seems to possess an inherent congruence of musicianship, lyrical prose and vocals; leading one to recognize quickly that Rose Polenzani is an honest poet of unususal integrity, and that Anybody is the work of an important and vital new artist.

This CD rocks! (Okay, so it's more folky than rocky...but what I mean is that I really like it.) One can never have enough Rose Polenzani!

"Tremendous and lovely...." --Chicago Tribune "Some artists are inspired. Some seem to be haunted. Rose Polenzani might be both." --Performing Songwriter "Polenzani writes poetry, not lyrics. Her words are as dark and complex as her boice, the two together are beautiful and indescribable." --Northeast Performer "If you don't get it the first time, listen again. She's the real thing." --Charlie Hunter, Young Hunter Management "...quietly dangerous..." --Illinois Entertainer
