notes

Poor Man's Whiskey plays acoustic music with a rock-n-roll attitude that fuses bluegrass, blues, reggae, folk and jazz. Through fermentation and distillation, they've crafted an original and modern American music that inspires you to move.

Though the exact location of their hideout is unknown, local legends place it somewhere in the backwoods of the wine country, between Pinot vines and a moonshine still, well protected by small arms. Together, they have produced three full length albums: Roadside Attraction (2005) and Train to California (2003) and the out of prin Hunner Proof (2001).

Poor Man's Whiskey is known for creating a hoe-down wherever they go. Their music has been featured on KRSH and KGO radio, and they have headlined classic venues including the SF Bay Area's Sweetwater, Rancho Nicasio and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass.

How the band came to be...

The band grew organically, from the core of Jason Beard (Mandolin), Josh Brough (Banjo), Gary Neargarder (Guitar) and Tony Robinson (Bass) to include Chris Rovetti (Fiddle) filling out the traditional sound and then Noah Logan (Drums) adding a big beat for dancing. Special guest Eli Jebidiah often joins the band on the Dobro.

A part of the community...

Poor Man's Whiskey is proud to be an active part of the SF Bay Area community. The band has contributed performances for a number of community and charity organizations, including the Sierra Club, SF Unified Schools, Live Oak Preschool, Ross Recretation District, Santa Rosa Parks and Recreation and Tamalpais High School.

We hope everyone enjoys the music.

  • Great CD!

Got this for Christmas and love it. Not one bad song on the Album. Josh Brough has a great voice for this style of music. Their other album "Roadside Attraction" is just as good.

  • Train to California is a great album!!

Train to California is an album full of great songwriting. Beer Goggle Blues is one of those tunes that sticks in your head especially when you've had a few too many and it lends itself to rip-roaring renditions that sound great on long walks home from the bar. I also really enjoy the catastrophic sound effects on the last track... the one about "drinkin' whiskey on the dance floor". Great job guys, I can't wait to hear the newest album.

  • Lots of good tracks, some great

There are a lot of good tracks on this album, some are great like #'s 4, 6 and especially Love Light Glows,#8. The singer can't reach some of the notes which just makes the song more sincere. Great sound effects mix with the songs in the openings of #5, Lake County Lady and the background sound of the beerhall in #6 and also in #10. The only part I thought out of place was the Cosack sound of #2 which didn't fit with the rest of the album. Lots of fine fiddling, guitar picking and bass playing. Whoever put these tracks together did a great job, the smashed glass was a fit finish.

  • Yer' in for a real treat!

This album never gets old. I've listened to over and over for the past few years. It still makes me laugh, dance and sing along with every song! Can't wait for the next album!
