Individually and as the Palmer Lavin Duo they have played from Los Angeles to Portland, and from New York to Newport.

Nobody's trying too hard here. Easy, laid back, beautifully recorded.
author: Kirk OlsenNobody's trying too hard here. Easy, laid back, beautifully recorded. I was reminded immediately of one of my all time favorite albums, "Julie is Her Name", Julie London's debut album featuring solo accompaniment by guitarist Barney Kessel. The opening notes of Mark Lavin's solo guitar sound like butter. I would love to get a hold of this guy's rig because he is a tone monster. He is also a master of restraint. His playing is simple and honest. There is no grandstanding. You can tell that he is there to showcase and support his vocalist, Sally Palmer, and he does this well…………. I used the word honest in my description of Mr. Lavin and I have to use it again for Sally. She has that rare natural talent of singing a song like she's just talking to you - easy like Frank. Her delivery reminds me of Blossom Dearie. She has Blossom's playfulness. You can hear the smile in her voice. She has all that but with a richer, warmer tone. The recording is also a star. The vocals are crisp without being shrill, warm without being dark, and as I mentioned before the guitar sounds like butter. If this CD were food you would put on a few pounds just listening…………….. I would be remiss not to give a nod to Greg D'Augelli, another player in service to tone. His sax is reminiscent of the great Paul Desmond. Finally my hat is off to this group for their song selection. I was delighted to hear such neglected gems as "Lullaby of the Leaves" and "Prelude to a Kiss"…………….. So why only 4 stars and not 5? I guess I would like to hear a little more rippin from Mark and maybe a drummer pushing them all a little harder. Then again I don't know. That would be a different album and this one is fine just the way it is. It is perfect for a misty day sitting inside by the fire or a nice way to unwind after fighting that rush hour traffic to get home.
