REVIEW OF THE TIMES EP BY JENNY LUSH - MIDWESTBANDS.COM 5/20/03 I admit it. I am one of those people who loves a good story. Not only do I love a good story, but I really love a good TRUE story. I have been known to get caught up in certain news stories, movies based on fact and…yes…reality TV; which may not really be reality, but what I really love about it is the people---just being people. I love hearing about their talents and seeing/hearing their talents for myself. Every day I come across many talented individuals that have great “stories” behind their talents. They can range from how they grew up and got to where they are to having great resumes of their accomplishments. Actually, sometimes the “story” is more interesting than the music it represents! Even Behind the Music is more interesting than some of the actual MUSIC some of the individuals have put out! Sometimes I am in shock by their horrible behavior, and other times just in awe of what great achievements a person has made. Mostly, however, I am moved the most when I relate to someone. When something “clicks”. Like their name, Plan of Man of course has an interesting story. Whether it is their “Behind the Music” history or their emotionally driven-heart-on-your-sleeve lyrics, this band gives you the feeling they know about life---because they are living it to the fullest and telling us the story in their music. Demi Demaree (vocals), Ron Ping (bass), Justin Reid (guitar) and Tim Bernauer (drums) make up this young powerhouse of musicians. Musically they rock! They are tight in instrumentation and fluid in execution from beginning to end. You You hear this from the beginning of the first track on their first release Alchemy, (“Plan of Man (War Song)”) to the end of the last track on their latest release The Times. I am a person that likes interesting twists and turns in a good story, and that is also true with the music I listen to. I really struggle with listening to repetitive beats, melodies and vocals in any given song. Like a favorite book or movie, the plot of the songs on The Times is full of twists, turns and surprises, both musically and vocally. Demaree’s vocals are unique in sound and style. He can switch from melody to rap, to a rock shout easily. He has the type of voice that when you hear him, you know its Demi. Vocally, I can’t really think of anyone that he “sounds like” or emulates. He has a sexy, soulful voice; one that, fortunately, isn’t wasted on cheesy, shallow lyrics. This bands’s soul is found in its lyrics. THAT is where the “click” is for me. Considering the youth of this band, it goes against type for the lyrics to be the “click” for me. I have kids their age. Sometimes, though, the stories of our lives cause us to ‘grow beyond our years’ and this band has done just that. In 2001, Demi was diagnosed with lymphatic cancer. His experience of facing this disease, fighting it---beating it---has caused not only him, but also his band mates to truly look at life with a view that a lot of us don’t see until we are much older. “Some say we’re sorry but we’re not the one to blame & I want to be the one to change your mind…for each his own to make a world it takes all kinds and I feel that most of us are far behind…what makes you different from me? (nothin’) judge me by not what you see (no one) …that’s what we live, breathe, think---make up your name for yourself---don’t place judgment on anyone else……that’s what we live….that’s what we give….who are we to say what’s right? Who designs our temple?” The lyrics of "Fall Again" and "The Times" sound like someone who knows of which they speak, and speaks it with authority. Of course not all of their songs are all about changing everyone’s view. The first track, “Lose Her Again” is something probably all of us have had in one way or another…Seeing someone be careless with a relationship that we’d like to have ourselves and giving the warning “you're gonna lose her again” but even this song has great lyrical content in it… “well I’ve seen this all before, yeah I lived it back in time…and I ain’t the one to step into your silly frame of mind…and I’ve known you way to long and I’ve walked the road with you, so tell me why the hell we do the stupid things we do? You’re livin’ ever free, your bed is never made, you’re leavin’ her alone, but do you think one day that she could up and go and lock the door behind and you would never know; something you should keep in mind…you’re gonna lose her again”. (I love the bass line in this song as well!) ”Turn of the Wheel” is a song I relate to a lot, because when things get tough I feel like “leaving” too. I see people changing around me…stresses come…and sometimes we need a change of scenery…but the burning question is always when we return, “will I be welcome, or will I be left alone?” My favorite track on this particular CD is "Wake Up". First, I love it musically. From acoustic guitar solos, to electric guitar solos…it’s just great. Lyrically it is positive to me. It does speak of how we need to “Wake Up” when we are stressed and how “we’ve all had our better days, we’re all stuck in our own ways, BUT, don’t think that we can’t change these things…Addictions aren’t safe, you’ve got to learn to throw them out…I’ve got to open up my eyes but I don’t know how”. It is just a really satisfying song from beginning to end. I guess you can tell I truly like this band. They have depth---but are fun at the same time. Their sound is up to date and unique. I believe things happen for a reason….and the “Plan of Man” is for us to live our lives to the best of our ability. This band is doing just that. They have made it who they are. I highly recommend their latest EP, The Times and also Alchemy, their first release. Get them. Listen. Then tell the band what you think when you visit Louisville and hear them live. Sounds like a plan.---J. Lush, MidwestBands.com, 5/20/03
