notes

Pink Humpy’s musicians have lived in Philly their whole lives, but judging by the sound of their chill soulful indie rock music you might think they belong by the beach in San Diego. Since 2004, singer songwriter Brendan T. Brennan has led this group of like-minded artists on their creative journey. In 2008, Pink Humpy is unleashing their debut LP "Your Diamond Ring and My Guitar". The album has a breathy, soft, simple and natural sound that feels laid back and inviting. It's been described as a bohemian style groove that sounds a bit jazzy, funky or almost R&B at times. The lyrics speak of love, but also touch on serious topics like homelessness, mental illness and addiction.

Colorado Daily writes, "With undeniable comparisons to Jack Johnson, John Mayer, and even some old songs of The Shins, this album is incredibly listener-friendly."

The opening track "Photo Opportunity" is reminiscent of vintage Steely Dan with a jazzy reggae-rock, rhythm and blues blend feel to it. "Insomniac Special" sets you at 3 a.m. in Paris in a dark smoky basement poetry club, and features sax courtesy of guest musician Frank Ewing from another Philly rock band Downtown Harvest. “Sunrise” is a jazzy number with a slinky walking bass line performed by Yos DiAngelo. "Repeats in Her Head" highlights the fine drum groove laid on the album by Jon Wood of the instrumental jazz fusion group Grimace Federation. "Not the Reason" is an indie rock tune in the ballpark of The Shins. This track was featured on the Souls of Poor Folk homeless benefit compilation CD (also available on CD Baby.)

The second half of the album leads you through a Jamiroquai style danceable tune "Whitest Sands" laden with Brendan’s guitar leads and vocal harmonies, and into a funky wah guitar tune in "Backpack" that feels like you’re riding along on a bumpy subway train covered in spray paint propaganda. It shifts gears to singer songwriter style acoustic songs in "Stop and Go" and "Something New" that feature Jeffrey James Harvey adding hand percussion to the sparse mix. Brendan’s intimate vocal style on these acoustic songs is reminiscent of Jack Johnson, John Mayer, or Elliott Smith. The album finishes with a heartfelt love song in "Three Words".

Take a chance on a new artist and pick up this CD. Pop it in, put it on repeat play and enjoy.

  • I Can't Stop Listening... and Feel the Need to Recommend!
    author: Melissa

I will admit that I can be a music snob... and this is definitely one of my absolute favorite new discs! The writing and clean production make this a CD I find myself listening to on repeat quite a bit in the past few weeks since aquiring. I would and WILL recommend this to many of my friends who all have a very diverse taste in music. Well done... and thank you!

  • Recommended! Great Production, Solid, Enjoyable Songs!

Insomniac Special is my initial favorite with it's groovy, laid-back hooks and subtle vocals; Whitest Sands and Not the Reason coming in close seconds. Whitest Sands is reminiscent of vintage Fleetwood Mac with Bob Welch styled vocals straight out of the seventies but with a contemporary mix. Brendan's vocals sound great throughout, the song compositions are strong and bass and guitar sound especially good. It's been in my media player for the last two days...great stuff!

  • so relaxing!

This is quickly becoming a favorite CD of mine. Brendan's voice is incredible and the sax is a special treat. "Stop and Go" and "Three Words" are especially easy to hit the repeat button with.

  • Intoxicating
    author: Mario

Get your favorite drink to sip before starting this album. If you're looking to sit back and relax - start off with Photo Opportunity from Pink Humpy. From the jazzy intro, to the silky smooth lead vocals, you'll be wishing you had a drink to sip on. Beware of the chorus in Insomniac Special - I had that repeating in my head as I went to sleep! You will fall in love with Three Words. The entire album is a treat. If you like John Mayer and Jack Johnson, give the Hump a shot - you won't be disappointed.

  • Soothing and Relaxing
    author: Katy

If you like Jack Johnson, you'll love Pink Humpy. Soothing, soulful music with a great beat. Can listen to over and over again. The singles "Not the Reason" and "Stop and Go" are two of my favorite tracks. One of the only CDs where I've listened to entire CD and love every song. You must purchase this CD!!!!
