notes

Rod Picott's 2001 debut album, Tiger Tom Dixon's Blues, was hailed by Robert Oermann at Music Row Magazine as, "the birth of a major, major artist." Now nipping at its heels just a year and a half later comes Rod's sophomore effort, Stray Dogs.

Stray Dogs was produced by David Henry (Cowboy Junkies, Josh Rouse) and features Craig Krampf on drums, Paul Slivka on bass, and guest appearances by Slaid Cleaves and Alison Krauss.

Despite the heady company, it's Picott's smoky delivery and confident songwriting that stands out here on Stray Dogs. A worthy successor to his remarkable debut.

  • Play it...someone WILL ask who it is.
    author: Pete Chaytor

Stray Dogs is a comfortable mixture of electric and acoustic modern folk. Clear imagery and often introspective lyrics ride over catchy hooks but a smattering of humor here and there indicates the artist doesn't take life (or himself) too seriously. It's a quality piece of work. Spend the cash...you'll get more than your money's worth.

  • The Real Deal

  • Rod Picott is stuck in my cd player!
    author: Guy

What a wonderful cd! This thing is currently stuck in my cd player and keeps playing over and over, lol. I'm very impressed with his variety, he rocks, does some smokey bluesish-altcountry, however you want to describe it he seems to defy being categorized. Fresh stuff The next time I hear that this guy is coming to town I will not miss the show.. see ya there!

It's great to see Rod getting airplay for this fine piece of work. I heard Circus Girl on radioio.com, and came and bought the Stay Dogs CD. Now I hear all the songs on Radioio and elsewhere. Stay Dogs will be at the top of my CD stack for a long time to come! Highly Recommended!

  • Honest and rich!
author: Laura T Lynch of Kweevak.com

Rod writes powerful poetic lyrics and his arrangements are compelling and well produced. Picott is known for his somewhat smoky vocals. He is supported by first-class musicians on this twelve-track collection. Rod's style is a captivating mix of rock and country and his songs are gripping. The title track opens the CD with solid rock rifts, catchy hooks and rich raspy vocals. It is followed by 'Baby Blue', which brilliantly blends a classic rock sound with modern storytelling. A subtle beat and fine guitar work complete the tale. 'Find Your Way Home' has a reflective tone touched with rich instrumentation and more honest earthy vocals. If you enjoy intelligent rock with a touch of country Stray Dogs should have a home in your CD collection!

  • He details the beauty and brutality of working-class America
author: John Hood, Music Row Magazine

Picott's 2001 debut, Tiger Tom Dixon's Blues, introduced the world to a potent storyteller who detailed the beauty and brutality of working-class America. His follow-up, Stray Dogs, delivers on that promise in a big way. The themes, while still rooted in the details of ordinary life, are more universal and his lyrics are razor sharp. And Picott sings with an assured, gritty vocal charisma that has star written all over it. The five-song set opening the album contains some of the finest songwriting to come out of Nashville in years. It kicks off with the driving title track and then rolls into 'Baby Blue' which features a Beatles-esque chorus. 'Angels and Acrobats' is a stripped down acoustic love song with a simple but powerful lyric —'I ain't no angel/ain't no acrobat/but when you love me/honey I fly like that.' Next up is the mournful 'Circus Girl' which features harmony vocals from Alison Krauss. 'Workshirts and Turpentine' is minimalist song poetry at its economic best. There's not a wasted word in this moody rocker. This album is a remarkable step-forward for a developing artist and it vaults Picott into the company of John Hiatt, Steve Earle and Lucinda Williams as a narrative storyteller with an eye for detail and an ear for melody. Not to be missed.
