notes

If ever a singer knew how to engage the hearts and minds of children using music and movement, thus motivating them to excellence in reading and writing, it is SUPER TEACHER, Phyllis Ferguson. Her new CD, Can’t Judge A Book By Its Cover brings a wealth of traditional and original songs that get elementary school children hopping, dancing, clapping, singing and writing their own lyrics.

Kids joyously honor differences in others with the melodious title song, while Butterfly gives them an opportunity to admire their own growth and changes.

Children appreciate the world and their place in it as they join in with Hooray for the World. Writing their own rhyming lyrics is a natural result when kids sing Fooba Wooba John.

Pepperoni Pizza With Cheese blends melodies, rhythms and movements to enable kids to sing a recipe and an opportunity to create their own procedural text with the accompaniment track. It is amazing how many different variations of Ice-Cream, Ice Cream kids invent.

Phyllis’ raucous, “in the hood”, Trip Trap Rap, not only creates an new twist on an old tale, but engages kids in rapping along with Phyllis and acting out the lyrics.

My students and I are enjoying our new CD. They especially love "Mrs. Gooney Bird" and "Pepperoni Pizza with Cheese." I have an active group this year and these songs are great for getting them up and moving. Thanks! Jill Morrison - Kindergarten Teacher Hammond, In.
