notes

Pyrenean-born Nicole Peyrafitte is a performance artist who sings, paint, films, writes & cooks. She draws on her eclectic heritage to perform songs ranging from French cabaret to jazz standards and contemporary poetry. Her voice work is often integrated into multimedia stagings based on her visuals (paintings and/or videos) and writings. Her major, internationally performed, projects include "The Bi-Continental Chowder / La Garbure Transcontinentale," a multi-media performance involving the onstage preparation and cooking of a soup shared, as a finale, with the audience. Peyrafitte often pursues related multi-cultural and multi-media investigations inspired by her discovery that Albany, NY (where she lives) and Luchon in the French Pyrenees (where she is from) are on the same latitude. Her work addresses the experiences of negotiating her identity across two continents and four languages.

This CD compiles all the original songs from the 3 part performance La Garbure Transcontinentale/ The Bi-Continental Chowder
PART 1: Right in front of you I cook The Bi-Continental Chowder and while doing so I tell you the enchanting story of the — sometimes unusual — ingredients.
PART 2: While the The Bi-Continental Chowder simmers stage left, we embark on a voyage — non-linear, though on a line — of original songs, videos and live music.
PART 3: By now the mouth-watering smell of the chowder has filled the room. Time to share it with the audience.
This performance tells of my travels and of the findings gathered on my line. A virtual line, a shared latitude that links Luchon, my hometown in the Gascon Pyrenees and Albany, NY where I live. This line exists with or without me but through me! Immanent evidence; a mantra emerges:

Things fall where they lie.
Les choses tombent où elles reposent.
Las causas cagen on jasen.
