The Pete Special Trio

Pete Special was guitarist and bandleader of "Big Twist & the Mellow Fellows", recording 5 albums for Alligator Records, until the death of Larry "Big Twist" Nolan in 1990. During 1991-92, Pete toured with "The Band" (Bob Dylan's backing group), after which he returned to Chicago to take up first a solo career and then form the Pete Special Band comprising some of Chicago's hottest session musicians. Pete's latest venture, the Pete Special Trio is a return to a much more basic and earthy sound, exploring the raw interplay of his growling vocals and extraordinary guitar virtuosity with drummer John Maloney (Maschina, Convulsions, Ghettobillies) and harmonicist Benjamin Ruth (Wrightwalleys, Muck Brothers, Convulsions and founder of The Chicago Music Explosion).

The Pete Special Trio toured throughout England from August 25th (Great British RnB Festival in Colne) through October 2nd of 2002 at over 30 venues before joining up with the Chicago Music Explosion (www.chicagomusicexplosion.com).

Reviews:

Pete Special is an originator and professor of the fat, funkified, urban R&B sound that influences and now spills out from the best regional bar bands in America's great northern cities: Chicago, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Kansas City Missouri. He continues the pedigree, which he established with the breakthrough band, Big Twist & the Mellow Fellows, and is one of the leaders in the new millennium blues movement. Along with Robert Cray, Johnny Lang, Kenny Wayne Shepherd, Blues Traveler, Sy Klopps Band, Ron Sunshine, and Buddy Guy, Pete Special will be laying down the future of the classic American music in the years to come.
-Dan Aykroyd (a.k.a Elwood Blues and founder of The House of Blues)

Pete Special brings the legacy of Chicago's R&B scene into the millennium with a smoky. Late-night funk reminiscent of Dr. John and Tom Waits, but with his own original stamp that will leave you wanting more.

  • Great disc!

This is a nice change of pace from the over amped music that passes itself of as blues these days. Laid back but not lazy, this is a great late night disc!

Sometimes you just know exactly what you want no matter how hard it is to get. If it's some hearty, unforgiving blues you're after, hold on. This full-throated, gut-wrenching southern Mississippi blues, soul and r&b from the man who founded Big Twist and the Mellow Fellows, played a stint with The Band, and has now formed trio that's set to revolutionize the execution of Chicago blues, will hit the spot like nothing before. Grab a fork.
