Pete Lashley's 'Voices From The Ocean Road'
A collection of 10 songs inspired by Pete's journey along South East Australia's ’Great Ocean Road’. Linking past and more contemporary events, nature and mankind, this album is really a concept album paying homage to a unique part of the world.
The Great Ocean Road in South East Australia officially runs between the Victorian cities of Torquay and Warrnambool before heading north-west into South Australia on its way to Adelaide. The road was built between 1919 and 1932 by 3000 servicemen many of whom had returned from The Great War. In places on its undulating course the road hugs steep tree clad hills and sea cliffs so that at times it is perched directly above the pounding surf of the Bass Strait and Southern Ocean.
The sense of history is strong in this area owing to early aboriginal settlement (The Wathaurong), the arrival of the early penal colonists, escapees such as the wild white man, and the many shipwrecks that lie just off the coast.
In January 1990 a couple walked out onto a coastal headland just off the Ocean road, known as London Bridge. Suddenly part of the headland collapsed leaving the couple stranded from the mainland. They were rescued by helicopter and as far as I’m aware no injuries were sustained but it must have been quite an experience for them to witness the grand ever changing nature of the Victorian coastline at such close proximity.
