The blend for this album (with sound mostly produced by the audio conductor MARC D) is a mix of organic and synth sounds, making for an energy driven, emotional and thought provoking listening experience.//

  • Perseph1 spits fierce rhymes like no other MC

    Depending on who you talk to and what you read, the female MC has not received a lot of respect from their male brethren. In fact, it's been more of a middle finger, and the ladies of hip-hop have had to fight back in order to gain any acceptance. The outlook needs to change, and yet even if it did, it probably would not stop the ladies from doing what they have to do in order to be heard. Persephone, now known as Perseph1 happens to be one of those women who has collaborated and opened for many artists in her time in front of the mic, but feels that now is the time to be heard by everyone. Her debut album is called Eartha Spitts, and it's being described as "experimental hip-hop". A lot of people will probably ask if a woman could even be experimental hip-hop, but then Perseph1 would find something in her mind bank to smack the shit out of you. Every single song on this is a verbal punch to the rib cage, and upon first listen I wondered if she would rap in the same style with each song, where the lyrics come out rapidly and you have to concentrate on where lines end and begin, similar to what Kool Keith is known for. This isn't just music with gentle sugar sprinkles, it's a fire extinguisher with Jolt Cola and you're blinded by the strength of the carbonation and caffeine. Perseph1's flow can be very articulate and fans of Lateef The Truth Speaker, Chino XL, El-P and T-Love will like the way she establishes her stories and rhymes. I'm not sure how she writes and rhymes in the studio, but much of what she comes up with sounds as if it's off the head, where it may be an unprepared freestyle or it may very well come from a box of notebooks she's been waiting to share with people for awhile. One can hear about the conflict of love and relationships, the ugliness of hatred and racism, and why her role as a female MC is unique in a genre that wants to take away those roles. Hell, it's not about being a "female MC", this is someone who is a great lyricist and a powerful rapper who turns every corner with ease, without ever stepping on the brakes. The production comes from a diverse choice of people, including Marc Digital, Eggnog, Tryeyevision, and Mafesto. Some will take hip-hop into uncharted territories (only for the adventurous, leave your lameness at the door), while with another song it sounds as if Roni Size came into the studio and said "love, chop it up over this rapid pace and keep it wicked". It seems the majority of female rappers want to play it safe, Perseph1 is willing to take chances and fortunately it pays off. It would be great for her to have massive success, but the mainstrean tends to extract and clone what they want for mass production. If she has to work ten times as hard while "bubbling under", then I hope she can do that to as many open-minded listeners as possible. The close-minded will never know what they're missing, but if she can tap into the mentally dead, more power to her.

    Perseph One She gets her name from Greek mythology (the daughter of a goddess, Persephone was kidnapped and taken to Hades), but her skills she got on her own. She's opened for Talib Kweli, C-Rayz Walz and Jean Grae, guest-starred on releases by The Tape and Jake Childes, and played plenty warehouse parties and B-boy Craig Long's monthly music bashes. In between spitting out rhymes and making a name for herself as the Houston beat/wordstress, Perseph One does the usual waiting-to-get-famous gigs, like waiting tables and working at a day care. Of course, the success of her new album, Eartha Spitts, with guest spots by Stitch, Vertigone & Babelfishh, U.B. and Godemis and production by Marc Digital and Eggnog, might make waiting tables a thing of the past.
