notes
Cuban troubador Pedro Luis Ferrer makes his debut with 1999's self-titled album. One of the leaders in the "guaracha" musical style, Ferrer's music blends classical and pop idioms and features reflective lyrics about the modern Cuban condition. Songs like "La Tarde se ha Puesto Triste" and "No Me Voy a Defender" reflect his emotional, political style.

Exemplifying and fully embodying Cuban guaracha, Pedro Luis Ferrer inhabits this style in its full range, fleshing out the wide spectrum of musical color and history, from its traditional peasant street music role to its evolution into "Casino," later known as salsa. Pedro brings an unusual light and brilliance to the music, not only with his clear and full-bodied vocals, his sparkling talent for spinning a melody that rolls off the instruments as naturally as water flows, in perfect synch with his political lyrics. This self-titled debut whets the appepite of Cuban music lovers, giving them emotional substance to chew on both musically and beyond.
