notes
Pearl Williams, a native Philadelphian, hails from a family of stellar musicians. She formally studied Classical Piano at the Theodore Presser School of Music. Unfortunately, her main interest was not of becoming an accomplished classical pianist, but of becoming a successful Jazz vocalist. Early in high school, Pearl sang with the Paul Whitman Singers and her high school A capella Choir. While in high school, she was the vocalist for a Jazz group formed by renowned Philadelphia Jazz Pianist McCoy Tyner, her neighbor and friend, Thus, these venues became the embryo of her vocal career which continues to fervently blossom. Pearl's has a most unique style of phrasing. She says it's her instinctive feeling for rhythm and lyrics, not formal training that enables her to skillfully execute her phrasing technique. Her manner of presentation like her persona, is warm and sensously sophisticated with deep emotional characteristics which depicts this lady is truly an artistic vocal stylist and not just a run-of-the-mill singer. Her musical career has spanned for more than three decades. This CD was recorded with renowned tenor saxophone magnet, Houston Person. The rhythm section is fully loaded with the likes of piano and keyboard genius, Aaron Graves who is also the musical arranger for this CD; and the superb musical artistry of Gerald "Twig" Smith on guitar, Lee Smith on bass, Harry "Butch" Reed on drums and Darryl Burgee on percussion. An accomplished free-lance vocal stylist, Pearl has performed with numerous Jazz musicians, Jazz Ensembles and various other groups, some of whom are:
The Count Basie Orchestra, Benny Fields Orchestra,
Philadelphia Singing City Choir, Paul Roberts Singers,
