NOMENCLATURE- Escape To Sugarland
Generally you can pretty much judge a Cd by its cover however, in the unsigned arena I've been fooled on several occasions as talented bands engage their less talented friends to do cover art. Here's another one that got me… Escape To Sugarland is a self released full length Cd the band put out in the fall of 2003. Nomenclature have a sincere quality about them with a unique knack for songwriting. The band is more "alternative" rock and use comparisons to early Smashing Pumpkins on their web site. They're not afraid to go acoustic which helps the sincerity of their music to shine through as it's a hell of a lot easier to hide behind tons of reverb and distortion. Some of the tracks I enjoyed were Into The World, Alien, Diamond, Fearless Days And Reckless Nights and their ode to falling in love at an ATM machine Bank One. Nomenclature were a pleasant surprise. And to think, I saved this one for last.

Escape to Sugarland
(from www.loconotion.net)
When hearing Paul Taneja's ESCAPE TO SUGARLAND, it was a flashback for me to the style of music that got me started on this musical journey back six or seven years ago. Modern rock is the style of choice for Paul Taneja and his Chicago band. Odds are, you may have heard something similar to many of these songs before, but there are some tracks that stick out so powerfully that the rest of the album is elevated to a pretty good status.
The album opener "Into the World" begins with acoustic guitar that breaks off into what could almost be considered hard rock, but not quite. The song is catchy, but doesn't quite stick. It's the third track "Alien" that alerts us to the kind of quality songs that Nomenclature can turn out, a bit slower than the previous songs, but with a melody that is hard to let go of. The song's conclusion on piano works quite well. The most enjoyable of the upbeat songs on the album is "Fearless Days and Reckless Nights" which bears a strange resemblance to Craig's Brother from back in the old Tooth & Nail punk rock days.
The song "Zombie" is in a class all its own. With mostly acoustic guitar (aside from a little piano and background arrangement), this is a moving song about loneliness of the caliber that is rarely found in this musical genre. If there was a whole album of songs like this, I can only imagine how good it would be. "Dear Cab Driver" is a top-notch piano ballad to end the album on a high note.
Escape to Suglarland seems a little indicisive musically, but enough of the right decisions are made to make the album worthwhile and if the band makes an album that taps into the highlights of Escape, then we'll be in for a treat.
7 out of 10.

Nice quirky Phantom of the Paradise feel to this CD. Very different, one song being pop, another having a huge Meat Loaf type of epic presentation to it (Alien). Paul has good college rock vocal and sense of fun as well. He seems very versatile in his song writing and tempos. Nice and quick like on the song "Diamonds" or a nice Pink Floyd vibe on a tune like "Into The World".
Recommended.
