An album of self-penned material that reflects his penchant for seamless genre-hopping, as well as showing off his critically acclaimed songwriting skills.
Patsy has supplied the driving guitar rhythms on Irish/World Music diva Eileen Ivers' last European tour, and treaded the boards with Piping legend Paddy Keenan, who also sprinkles some of his own magic onto a few tracks on Patsy's album.
Patsy's interest in contemporary songwriting as well as his Jazz influences are also apparent, and "WHAT YOU KNOW" his second solo Cd, is a 14 song testament to his abilities as songwriter, guitar player, singer and interpreter, the latter being most evident in a blistering jazz/blues version of
"Star of The County Down" with Paddy Keenan on low whistle, an arrangement of the old Irish ballad that inspired Irish music critic Paul Dromey to declare Patsy "Ireland's best - kept musical secret."
All three of Patsy's solo CDs funded "The Peru Project":
From May 17 to May 31 2007, Patsy was in Ate ("at-aya"), a slum on the outskirts of Lima, Peru.
He was one of a dozen volunteers who were involved in, among other things, building a communtiy center in the heart of the slum for the impoverished families. Each volunteer raised $1700 (EUR 1300) to pay for :
bricks and mortar
a social worker for a year
basic vaccinations.
100% of the proceeds from Patsy's Cd sales, including the brand new Cd, "The Magician's Daughter", went towards raising that target amount.
Also, 100% of all digital downloads went towards funding the project.
Although that particular project has passed, 25% of anything you spend on Patsy O'Brien's catalog of work will go towards a new soup kitchen which will supply 180 children with one square meal a day.

author: Rajeev ChopraJust to give you an idea, there's a song about a dream Patsy has where he's kissing babies with the President ("Kiss Another One"). From the first line I thought it was going to be a trite disaster, heavy handed and superficially political. Instead it was a heartfelt and sympathetic song. Soon enough I found myself singing along. If you get the chance to see him live, ask for "Star of the County Down". The recorded version doesn't do his interpretation justice.
Poetic lyrics and great melodies from Patsy O'Brien
author: KenThis CD combines O'Brien's sometimes spectacular guitar playing with great songs. O'Brien's songwriting is even better than on Admission. "Avenues and Streets" is a folk hymn that lyrically captures the poetry in everyday life,observable to those with O'Brien's gift. The beautiful melody and O'Brien's sensitive, slightly uneven voice make this song seem to "roll in on the breeze." On "Seagull" O'Brien demonstrates his instrumental abilities. Some of the songs are accompanied by pipes, and have a more traditional Irish feel to them. About "Whiskey, Wine, and Beer" let me just say great song- an unusual love story. Buy this CD and play it as much as I do. CD's don't wear out like vinyl!

author: DJ ThunderLike a bee to honey, the songs are so hot, I'm in a puddle on the floor over the heat inside these grooves. Do yourself a favor, buy this, and melt. Track 12 is upbeat, and fun, it belong on main stream radio, many could find themselves humming this tune in the shower, grocery store, or car. While Patsy can also silence you, Track 7, would send even the most stubborm sleeper off to sweet dreams. The entire set is a lovely ebb and flow, no track I'd take away. Worth well more than 13 bucks. I'd get the CD, and check the performer out live. 5 Stars doesn't come close

His 1999 debut whispered of things to come, and come they have. This is a body of work scaffolded by a spinal column of O'Brien's own material, with just one interloper cover lurking within: a startling reinvention of 'The Star Of The County Down', with throaty vocals, languid guitar and Paddy Keenan's sublime low whistle. O'Brien's soundscape is overwhelmingly democratic, with Keenan's pipes and flute sharing space with mandolin, fiddle and the curious presence of Jef Wilson's instruments of choice: wall and pencil.
