notes
A dozen stars of Broadway and cabaret sing the original songs of national award-winning writer Bob Ost.
(Hey, that's me!) "A Special Place" is a heart-felt compilation of love-related tunes, each carefully matched to the special talents of my extraordinary singer friends (all of whom are more famous than me).
The idea was to give my Broadway pals a chance to work in a variety of pop styles -- and some of them will really surprise you! The CD features Tony award winner Lillias White in a wailing R&B "A Little Love", Tony nominee Alice Ripley in an amazing rendition of my ballad "In Between the Lines" (written with Lenny Babbish), 3-time Tony nominee Rebecca Luker having a good old time with the comedy novelty "Be My Valentine", David Sabella in a Sam Harris-like light jazz ballad "Slow" and Heather MacRae kicking butt with the rowdy retro-rock "Hard Drivin' Woman".
The songs are meant to entertain and touch you, and some should get you dancing, as well.
There are brilliant arrangements by George Small, superb engineering by Chip Fabrizi, with some pretty hot live percussion by Chip on some of the tracks.
If you buy it, I hope you'll email me to let me know how you like it: bobostcd@aol.com.
Knowing that my music reaches people is what keeps me going.

Having just listened to Bob Ost’s spectacular “A Special Place”…Songs from the Heart, let me invite listeners to open their ears to the dazzling panorama of romance, poetry, and honesty that Ost and his 13 superbly singers present in this original and beautifully crafted collection. From the lyrically surprising “Aren’t You The Lucky One”, to the playful “I’m Gonna Find Out” to the heartfelt finale of “A Special Place”, each artist, ranging from Rebecca Luker, Brian Lane Green, and KT Sullivan, present their unique and definitive interpretation with the candor, strength, and wonder of Ost’s writing. Musical Director George Small has captured the essence of each piece with sensitivity, a beautiful rhythmic pulse, and an integrated musical synergy of which he truly is master. The collaboration is brought home by Chip Fabrizi, one of the four producers, an engineer, percussionist, and a pair of ears that is remarkable for its commitment to excellence and truth. “A Special Place” by Bob Ost is a musical happening for our time. There are many great songs being written today by "new" songwriters in the same vain as the legends of the Great American Songbook. This CD has something for everyone by one of the new generation of songwriters, Bob Ost. It is filled with up tempo, hard drivin melodies as well as tender ballads and a little bit of comedic zing...and the performers are all top notch. Where else will you find a collection of some of Broadway's biggies..Alice Ripley, Rebecca Luker, Lillias White..and also some of New York Cabaret's best...KT Sullivan, Heather MacRae?...If you are looking for songs that have a new twist, Give A Special Place a listen and support the new work that is being written!
