(About MP3 downloads at CD Baby)

organissimo is a trio based around the Hammond organ that plays jazz with soul.

notes

“Combine Alfredson's knack for choosing just the right color and tone in any given composition with his colleagues' ability to match his gestures, and you have one of the most promising organ trios in jazz.”
~ Howard Reich, Chicago Tribune

“Lansing, Michigan based organissimo… somewhat self-deprecatingly refers to itself as a bar band. But the group goes well beyond that as it stretches the boundaries of the traditional organ trio with bits of funk, blues, Latin, groove and New Orleans influences.”
~ Ed Trefzger, JazzWeek

“Gloss provides chewy chords and measured melodies as a foil to Alfredson's blistering, extroverted style; running with the current fashion that weds mainstream jazz and jam-band soul, Alfredson plays just recklessly enough, committing tiny acts of arson that keep things hot but don't quite bring the house down around his ears.”
~ Neil Tesser, Chicago Reader

“Alfredson handles the organ duties with panache, guitarist Gloss' solos and accompaniment mesh wonderfully and drummer Marsh lays down a red carpet of boogie with veteran authority. There's nothing too complicated about organissimo's approach: It's music that reminds of saxophonist Johnny Griffin's aphorism that jazz is music for people who have decided to feel good in spite of conditions."
~ Mark Stryker, Detroit Free Press

“Organ aficionados should consider [organissimo] a red alert. ”
~ Larry Hollis, Cadence Magazine

“organissimo… hits the spot in so many ways. Funky, soulful... Old School... New Attitude... a real modern organ trio sound!”
~ Eric Cohen, Music Director WAER-FM, Syracuse, NY

“[organissimo] returns with its second studio effort, jammed with Hammond B3-laced jazz, blues and pop that's every bit as challenging and award-worthy as the debut CD.”
~ John Sinkevics, Grand Rapids Press

___

On the heels of their award-winning debut (2003's "Waiting For The Boogaloo Sisters...") organissimo returns to the studio to create their sophomore effort, "This Is The Place".

A very melodic and symbiotic trio, organissimo brings fresh air to the sometimes stale organ trio scene. They draw casual listeners in with their democratic approach to music.

If you want a listening experience that will draw you in, if you want funky music that has some meat to it, if you want to know where jazz is headed...

This Is The Place.

Randy Marsh - drums

Special Guests:
Johnny Gist - saxophone (track 5)
Bill Vits - percussion (tracks 2, 7)

  • These guys are the real thing. They take the spirit of jazz and funk and move i
    author: Jeff Steele

I first heard these guys on XMRADIO. I was impressed. I quickly found out who they were and got the CD from CDBABY. I could do a review of just CDBABY. Anyway, on this CD they take the spirit of jazz and the spirit of funk and move a little further down the musical road. Most people would spend time trying to compare these fellows to you name it. I won't, this CD is good by any terms you would care to use. The CD is thought out and put together well. Each track flows to the next. You find yourself wanting more, not less when you come to the end of the CD. The sound is totally their own. In another life, I was a drummer. The drummer is THE force and anchor for this group. I am not putting anyone down, just saying that much of their sound hangs on the drummer's fills. His style is to move the music along and leave room for his band mates to solo. The MUSIC is always Tight. It is apparent that these fellows have played together for a long time. It shows in their work, very impressive. This CD is currently my favorite on the morning commute. I drive some days and take the train on others and either way I am listening to these guys at some point in that 90 minute ride.... If you don't have it, BUY IT NOW... if you do have it, get their first one as well.

  • Ode to This Is The Place...
    author: Groove Monkey

This is one groovy disc. The talent is inspiring and overwhelming. This CD doesn't get ejected from my car player. It keeps repeating and I keep listening. I actually sing along, and there aren't even any words. The tunes stay in my head and have made a happy home there. I feel good when it's in my ears. Can you dig it? Now buy it and make yourself happy, Jack.

  • This is EXCELLENT!
    author: Aline

What a great cd- as a new fan not knowing a lot about Organissimo, I was admittedly mostly curious at first...but now I am officially hooked! A smooth yet funky listen, my fave being Peaches En Regalia! Way to go Organissimo!

  • author: Snowflake

Thanks Organissimo for your great music on This is the Place! I truly appreciate hearing you live as well as on cd. My favorite compositions are Brother Ray and Tenderly. The harmonica player is great on Brother Ray.

  • This is definitely the place for the future of the B3 organ
    author: Matthew Kaminski

I love this CD! As an organist, let me tell you that Jim Alfredson is no joke! His rhythmic precision and timing is very impressive. I'm going to steal some of his licks(don't all musicians do that:). The arrangements remind me of a big band - very tight where Randy on drums sets up the hits. Joe is soooo in the pocket - I'm listening to Stomp Yo' Feet and love the way he comps in the spaces - doesn't get in anyones way. Tenderly reminds me of one of my favorite Larry Goldings songs "Where We've Been" from the 'Big Stuff' Cd. Great percussive groove to it and a beautiful arrangement(on Tenderly, that is). The ending to 'Play Nice' is one of the coolest things I've ever heard on a Jazz Organ recording(and I have tons!!!). Let me tell you that I'm a big Frank Zappa fan(just rented 'Baby Snakes') and 'Peaches' is a hard song to play and you guys pulled it off nicely - I want to hear 'Gregory Peckory' or 'San Berdino' next:) Pumpkin Pie is a perfect ending - making us want some more. . . Keep it up guys and come down to Atlanta sometime, Matthew Kaminski (Hammond B3 organist for Organized Time - www.organizedtime.org - www.matthewkaminski.com)

Loving the rendition of Tenderely (the main reason that I bought the album). Luckily, the other songs rock too. A bit repetitive at times, but still excellent.

  • Organ jazz with a difference
    author: Anders F

A very good CD, made by musicians not content with repeating the past. Most of the CD is made up by organissiomo's own compositions which in fact are excellent, the addition of special guests add further variety. In all, highly recommended.

  • simply awesome
    author: cynthia roberts

My brother is the jazz fan so he asked me about getting this Cd for him. Well, i ordered it and I must say he will have to get his own. This CD is mind bending I want to hear nothing else. you guys out did yourselves. love it man.

  • Solid!
author: Lisa Smith from Seattle, WA

Organissimo's follow-up album proved that practice makes perfect. Whenever I play this album around friends, I am always asked complimentarily "who IS this." This album is appropriate for the active and passive listener and I enjoy it more and more each time I listen to it. R. Marsh's harmonica is welcome ear candy, especially to those who have seen him play live. The B3 rollercoaster J. Alfredson leads us on is SO solid and J. Gloss's guitar artistry is stunning. I don't have a favorite cut, as each one hits a different nerve in a good way. Excellent writing, arrangement, production, etc. I'm looking forward to seeing them live in Seattle!

  • No Sophmore Jinx Here!
    author: Ben Ninmann

Do you know how somtimes you really like a recording by a new group, but when the second one rolls around you say, "What happened here? What a letdown". Well folks, that is definitely NOT the case here. Organissimo's 2nd recording comes out of the corner swinging. They seem to have gotten a bit more into the compositional element on this one, but haven't left the groove behind. The element of swing is still here w/ a few excursions into the land of Metersfonk as well. Want Latin? Ballads? You won't feel left out there either. My only complaint is the same as my review of thier first cd - these guys haven't gotten anywhere near the recognition they deserve! As a Hammond fanatic from way back I'm enjoying this one a lot, and as far as a Junior jinx, I'm sure "It aint'a gonna happen there, neither".

  • Well Structured Music Played Excellently. Big O moves as one.
    author: Ric Troll

There are plenty of cliches that are usually applied to organ trios and for the most part they usually fit. But these guys are a whole 'nother thing! This CD is chock full of interesting melodies, shifting rhythms and clever arrangements that never get in the way of the groove. And the sound is wonderfully warm. Recommended.

  • A great 2nd Record.....
    author: Oliver Stein

when I rated "Boogaloo Sister", I gave 4 stars only because I had the feeling the guys can improve on high level.... They did this time ! Tenderley and Peaches en Regalia are top notch performances of a Band playing "together" in the pure sence of the word, as well as the overall sound quality of the CD is superb ! Well done, guys ! Cheers, Oliver

  • Where no organ trio has gone before...
    author: Mark C

I must confess, I'm not an organ trio fanatic, but then this is not your normal organ trio. Alfredson's command of the B3 is nothing short of amazing, and his playing never hits that "muddy organ sound" that I find so annoying, no matter how fast he's burnin' the keys. Add the excellent work from Gloss and Marsh, and you've not only got a topnotch organ trio CD, but one that goes in unexpected directions. Originality may be passe on today's music scene, but thank goodness no one has told these guys!

  • Organissimo gives you a dose of it's live persona
    author: Ogie Dreyer

If you're like me, live jazz is what got you interested in the genre in the first place. To see the interactions and the resulting sounds puts into place some things that you can miss from a studio recording. Not so with this new release from Organissimo. The grooves that you nod your head and tap your feet to are all over this recording, and bring you a small dose of what they can do live in concert in an intimate setting. If you're hesitant to think an organ based trio can create enough diversity and originality to keep you interested for an entire "side", please put down your prejudices and LISTEN! (HEADPHONES will HELP!) Peaches en Regalia RULES! Not often do you hear a Zappa tune given a slight makeover sound so good. You'll have to listen for yourself, but my recommendation is that this is one of the best combo jazz cd's of the year!

  • Primo modern organ trio
    author: The Wayward Ear

There is no shortage of organ trios out there, but not too many that can bring you both the deep-groove, Jimmy-Smith kind of thing we look for from an organ trio along with a bunch of things--Frank Zappa, beautifully played Latinized ballads, fusion--we don't expect. If you love the classic jazz organ trio and are curious about where that sound can go, Organissimo is a group to check out.

  • Something For Everyone!!!
    author: Sam Phelps

I heard these guys on the radio today, and was floored. It is very groovy and melodic. Can't wait to share this with my music professor. In these days of highly derivative music, it is cool to hear such creative stuff. The Zappa cover is awesome!!!

  • Having been a B3 fan for 40 years, this one kicks butt!
    author: Justin Saint James

I cut my teeth on Jimmy Smith, McGriff, Groove, Shirley, Lonnie, McDuff, et.al. This group is terrific. Interesting, original, meter freaks, great guitar, crazy percussion. I love it: thanks for having it on your site. Justin

  • Second cd is a gem!
    author: Paul Maginley

Organissimo's second cd is real gem! The first was good, but this one shows a level of maturity greater than their first effort. As someone who frequently sees the band play live gigs in Ann Arbor and Detroit, it seemed that they had refined their cuts through multiple live sessions. In this case, I know firsthand that they had been playing the new tunes live for some time before this recording. As a result, we've got wonderfully finished, and multi-faceted music on this cd. It's hard to pick out any individual bandmember, as they are all equally integral to the music, but I am partial to organ playing, and Jim Alfredson is one heck of an organ player! That solo on "Tenderly" has my head spinning! It's truly inspiring to see that jazz is still alive today, as evidenced by this band; and for all of us fans of the organ/guitar/drums trio format, which was so popular in the 1960s, it gives great pleasure to listen to this set of three musicians, who both maintain the traditional flame, while also burning it in new directions. I do ask that they consider issuing a live disk in the future, which might include some more standards along with their original material. Mine is an unqualified thumbs up for this cd.

  • organissimo hits a higher groove
    author: PHIL QUIRK

On their new disc, Organissimo hits an even higher groove than their debut disc. If you're a fan of groove, greaze, rhythm, or you just appreciate solid musicianship, this is a disc to get. The guys in Organissimo hit one out of the park here, with grooves powerfully laid down by a truly funky drummer, allowing the organist and guitarist to really take off. I've only listened to this disc twice and I'm already hooked- BUY IT IF YOU KNOW WHAT'S GOOD FOR YOU!

  • Organissimo are taking the organ trio to a new place!
    author: Scott B.

THIS IS THE PLACE proves that Organissimo are well on their way to the goal of pushing the organ trio into the beyond. Jim Alfredson has played his way onto the short list of current great B3 players. The musical telepathy between he and guitarist Joe Gloss is something truly special whether it's Tenderly, Frank Zappa's Peaches... or one of their originals.

  • Wow!
    author: Ned G

My 16 year old nephew turned me on to these guys recently. I was hesitant, but after hearing these guys on the radio, I was floored. Tenderly is beautiful, and the rest is creative and exciting! This IS a must have.
