--Good Things Come To Those Who Wait - M. Smith, Feb. 2003--
"Waiting For The Boogaloo Sisters..." is the title of the debut record by Organissimo, but it could also be a description of the trio's very existence.
"Joe and I have waited to do this record for six years. All we needed were the tunes themselves and Randy," organist Jim Alfredson laughs.
Jim and guitarist Joe Gloss met in the fall of 1996 as students in Michigan State University's jazz combo program. They formed many trios and quartets together, but it wasn't until a master class with New York saxophonist Ron Blake that they decided to make a record. Not only that, but they were determined to have Ron on the album.
Six years later, in the fall of 2002, Jim and Joe entered the studio with the missing link, exceptional drummer Randy Marsh, to record as Organissimo. And they even got Ron Blake as well!
Good thing they waited. "Waiting for the boogaloo sisters..." features nine original compositions exploring a wide range of styles, colors, and influences.
The record opens with Meet Me @ 11, an odd metered jaunt with some unexpected twists and turns. Curt solos by organ and guitar frame a catchy melody that belies Randy's off kilter rhythmic pattern beneath.
The funky Clap Yo Hands features Ron Blake on tenor saxophone. "We wrote it around a Zigaboo Modeliste drum beat," Jim Alfredson explains. "The tune really wrote itself, but Ron's playing definitely added the finishing touch." Blake quotes some well known funkateers in his solo over a danceable groove.
Young's Dream, a tribute to organist Larry Young, has a rather ethereal birth. "It's based very closely on his tune 'Tyrone' and the melody actually came to me in a dream," Jim recalls. "I dreamed I was doing a gig with the trio and the audience was really digging this tune we were playing. The dream lasted just long enough to get to the head out of the tune. Then I woke up and ran to the organ to figure it out!"
Pre Dawn Rain is a gorgeous ballad by Joe Gloss. Joe's acoustic guitar states the melody alone at first and eventually is joined by the organ and drums which lead into a beautiful solo by Joe. Ron Blake follows invoking both Coltrane and Charles Lloyd within his solo. Ron and Joe then play the melody together and the song ends as quietly and gently as it began.
"Waiting for the boogaloo sisters..." is an amazing debut from this promising group. Jim, Joe, and Randy fit perfectly together, crafting a sound all their own and successfully extending the tradition of the organ trio. Good things do come to those who wait!

Just saw live at Baker's! Incredible!!!!!!
author: David JBaker's Keyboard Lounge, the oldest and most famous of all Jazz clubs, played host to a fresh and exciting band last night; Organissimo. This band is awesome!!! Playing mostly original jazz-inspired groovalicious tunes, these guys were tight and outta sight!! Great vibe and feel last night. The room was electric and the tunes from the upcoming CD are smokin'. Especially, loved Pumpkin Pie. The crowd response toward the end of that tune was unlike anything I've ever heard in that room. You had them, and most stayed til the end of the night. Can't wait till your back in the Motor City. I am bringin' all my friends. Thanks fellas for a wonderful musical experience. D
Great debut CD
author: miguelitoThe more I listen to it, the more I realize this is an astonishingly well done debut CD. It stands the test of repeated listening, merits daily play. With a band like Organissimo, the future of Hammond B3 trios is safe. Give us more!
They swing to a capital S
author: HardbopVery refreshing CD. Worth buying. I listen to it all the time. These guys swing.
Funky, wonderful, and simply amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!
author: GrandmasterGThis is such a wonderfully appealing CD, that all I can say is, buy a dozen. Give 'em out as gifts. The smiles and joy this group provides, with their hip yet democratic jazz, is amazing. With young and creative talent such as this, jazz just may have a chance. Yeah, this seems kind of sappy, but these guy's have made my decade!
This session has it all.................................
author: JamesFrom the pulse-quickening/goosebump inducing jazz groove of "Jimmy Smith Goes to Washington" to the funky stomp of "Clap Yo Hands" to the playful, dancing "Blake's Shake" to "Pre Dawn Rain" with it's reflective sensitivity to the misterioso/dynamic tension of "Decoder." All delivered with a healthy portion of grit and grease, FANTASTIC sound and *tight* execution from this very talented trio. Will I be buying their next release? Well..............that would be a no-brainer!!!!
Funky, groovy, chill'n music
author: Greg CavanaughPut the cd in, invite over some friends, get out some drinks and melt into a groovy, funky, pocket-locked night with this music. Love it! Support your local music!

Those Boogaloo sisters strutt their stuff on the Street of Dreams...
author: Tony McKennaObviously we have big nods to Jimmy Smith et al., but this album goes further than that. Riffy without being monotonous, greeeazzzzy enough without the cliché and sufficiently earthy to keep fans of the genre wanting more. Plus, I'd be surprised if snippets don't start surfacing in dance clubs across the UK soon. Buy it.
Doesn't get much greeeeazier!!!
author: Al Rearick (aka Big Al)I loved it! Greeeaze to spare! The cut titled "Young's Dream" lives up to its namesake. Next album, PLEASE!!!!
Somebody Get These Guys A National Promotion Deal!!
author: Ben NinmannGreat cd. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that I just happened to luck onto thier existance. These guys deserve much wider exposure. They have a first rate sound and each member has huge talent. I love the organ trio format & this group is a worthy addition to that tradition. Hope to hear much more from them in the future.
great record
author: TjobbeThanks guys, a great record with my absolute favourite being #4 Life wish... all songs have that groove that does make the songs stay in memory don't give it 5 Stars because you need to have some room for improvement ... waiting for the next one to come soon.
Just fantasic! I give it 6 stars but I can only go to 5 here.
author: HardbopjazzThis album is the bomb! Can't stop listening to it. But it, it is the 21st century's guide to jazz to come.
GREEAZE!
author: king ubuVery cool disc! Love "J.S. Goes to Washington"! Keep it greazy!
WOW !
author: John PullenI heard this song on WYCE in Grand Rapids and it stuck in my head, after hearing more from this group I was hooked. I bought four copies to give to friends and the one for me hasn't left the cd player yet...! Outstanding in every way!
A terrific band with many sounds... ALL first rate!
author: ChaneyA wonderfully fresh recording which I return to again and again. Well done Organissimo! And by the way, M O R E!
This trio is tight!
author: Paul MaginleyJust bought this cd and am impressed with this trio. They are all excellent musicians and there's a mix of funky tunes with ballads and straightahead jazz. Particularly beautiful is the ballad, "Life Wish." This trio carries on the proud tradition of jazz organ, but in a modern way. Highly recommended.
Organissimo's "maiden voyage", a joy to hear
author: Paul RyanThis debut album by Organissimo, a trio based in Michigan, should be sought by jazz fans of all stripes. The quality of both the tunes (all originals written by either organist Jim Alfredson or guitarist Joe Gloss) and the musicians is very high indeed. Two cuts, "Jimmy Smith Goes To Washington" and "Young's Dream", are obviously inspired by B3 legends Jimmy Smith and Larry Young respectively. Funkier songs like "Clap Yo' Hands", "Blake's Shake", and "You Don't Want To Do That" are danceable and have grooves that lock in tight and don't let up. Gloss penned the more reflective "Life Wish", which is a highlight for me; it showcases his superb Pat Metheny-like sound and sinuous phrasing (which is on display throughout the disc). Ron Blake appears on tenor and flute for a handful of selections, and his playing adds another dimension to the already smoking trio. Drummer Randy Marsh should also be noted for his extremely tasteful ensemble work, as well as his occasional solo spots. Finally, Alfredson's B3 mastery is something that's seldom seen these days, and it's hard to mention any flaws in his playing, be it comping, bass lines, or in improvising. In short, do yourself a favor and pick up this release by Organissimo, you won't be disappointed.
This release can be summarized in one word... DEALIN'!!!
author: Funky MonkThis is one record I can spin over-and-over and it keeps on givin' out the good juju. With Jim Alfredson at the helm, these cats really burn-it-out with their smokin' brand of organ jazz seasoned with some hearty funk sauce! What a tasty beverage...! Nothin' kills me better than some fat tube-driven B-3 organ; soul stories humpin' out of a Leslie speaker. Jim's really done his homework, hittin' those licks and making mad mojo melodies on every track. Then consider the clean-as-a-broke-dilly-dog tone that Joe Gloss gets on his hollowbody. Man, he plays with a subtlety that makes me cry with holy annointing! And the shamanic skinsman Randy Marsh; what a wizard! That cat makes a cosmic noise with every slap of the stick and thump of the pedal. Always freshly creative with his lockdown, last-meal groovestyle. Guest artist Ron Blake lays it on thick with his tenor. In his signature Wu-Tang style, Ron conjures the Carribean sun. I'm tellin' you, this record swings hard! Organissimo delivers the tradition and on top of that, offers up some funk'd'fied odd meter; some delightfully stankalicious original music. Finger lickin'! Waiting for the Boogaloo Sisters makes me want to give up being vegetarian and cook up something greaseyer-than-it-aughta-be! Maybe they'll come out with some soy-based chicken wangs, but untill then, I'll turn to Organissimo for my soul-food fix! Bravo, gentlemen! And congratulations on your touring. I wish you continued opportunities to knock 'em dead! Y'all should be signed and worldwide, as of this posting.
"...the whole ensemble is in the same groove, approaching nirvana at light speed
author: All About JazzOrganissimo injects their unique brand of organ trio music with a shot of James Brown. Drummer Randy Marsh, more often that not, lays down a greasy funk, supported by organist Jim Alfredson’s pedals--more like a Friday Night fish fry than chicken and ribs by the river. Guitarist Joe Gloss applies a sheen of respectability to this grease before he turns up the calories and really sends the funk into overdrive. And this is all before you get beyond the opener, "Meet Me @ 11." "Jimmy Smith Goes to Washington" is a tongue-in-cheek tribute to Mr. Smith, with Alfredson emulating Smith’s explosive soloing. Here the whole ensemble is in the same groove, approaching nirvana at light speed. More funk pops up on "Clap Yo’ Hands." "Life Wish" is a bossa ballad, and "Pre-Dawn Rain" an introspective meditation. The disc wraps up with ten minutes of major funk on "Decoder," a piece that simmers and percolates until the soloing starts and then the piece shifts into an overdrive that has been there all along. ~ C.
