notes

With Wackacon forces gathering on all fronts, Optimus Rhyme returned to their underground sonic laboratory with AutoBeat technician Jack Endino(Nirvana, Soundgarden) to produce their latest manifesto, School the Indie Rockers. Blending sci-fi themes with observations on everyday life, Optimus Rhyme’s second full-length album tackles subject matter ranging from local traffic law to the idiosyncrasies of artificial intelligence.

Optimus Rhyme’s unique style has earned them a spot among the biggest names in nerdcore hip-hop, but they’re not satisfied with ruling geek culture. With this album, Optimus Rhyme is setting their sites squarely on the prize held by the Indie Rock oppressors that have ruled their city for far too long. School the Indie Rockers will become the rallying cry for the next generation of AutoBeat Allies rolling off the assembly line.

  • Unexpected
    author: Peach

LOVE this cd. Stumbled across it on cd baby and ordered it, then listened for it for half of my road trip the following weekend. Autobeat Airbus (and the rest of the tunes) makes me want to bounce through my day.

  • BEST BAND EVER!!
    author: Randy Prodger

Every since I heard Opitimus Rhyme it seems to be all I listen to,and I never get sick of hearing it!I may switch from album to album, but they are that good.I can't wait to see what's in store for the future. IF YOU HAVEN'T GONE DISC GOLFING TRY IT TODAY,AND BE SURE TO BRING A RADIO EQUIPED WITH SOME AUTOBEATS!!!!!!!!!!

  • Not bad at all
    author: jeff burns

This album lights up my brain like a christmas tree. Having lived too long in Williamsburg and Manhattan, with no prospect of moving anywhere else in the near future, I find this album gives me a spring in my step as I bound over the vomit puddles produced by weekends welcoming bridge and tunnel celebrations, and the village shoppers who stray pass my chess stores. I recommend it MORE than the remix album Grimrock if this is your first delving into optimus.

  • I love my hometown music!!!
    author: Andrew

Have owned previous OR albums but they were stolen from me!! (cant blame them tho!!) I love this album though and I love hearin the good shit from my home town bands!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!

  • Cant Beat this
    author: Danny Martin

Optimus Rhyme cannot be explained. Well actually it can. Imagine mixing Bone Thugs and Harmony with a transformer. This is what Nerdcore is about. True raps about true technology.

  • Progression's never looked better.
    author: Studmaster McWikid

The Optimus are burning rubber with the way they're working their flow, delivering us their second album of heart-felt hip-hop. Well. Cybernetic-Core felt. Anyway, this album is a must-have for anyone who can imagine themselves and the people around them as transformers, and for those who can't, you'd better train your mind.

  • Nerdcore prevails again
    author: Tuomo Sipola

With superb production quality this guitar hip-hop posse strikes again. What can I say? The flow is great and the feeling I get from these songs is happiness. Somehow this album feels like a copy of the last one with different songs. Nevertheless this is what we expect. Go on and explode some wackacons.

  • A great improvement over the first album
    author: Tubal

It should probably have 4.5 stars, as a few 'bugs' keep it from a perfect 5. Mentioning them would be nitpicking though, as every song is good at the very least. The album shows a lot of progress in technique from the last album.

  • author: MG

A friend pointed me to their website and listening to the download tracks nonstop for a week I ordered the CDs. It just keeps getting better each time I listen. Can't wait for another album.

  • Makes you ache for a drum kit
    author: Bashu Naimi-Roy

You're going to want to have a drum kit after listening to this CD. This makes me want to rhyme. Perfect intro song, perfect outro song, excellent album. Their first frayed thin in some spots, but this one keeps it going. When I hear people say they don't listen to rap, I want to punch them in the ideals, then throw an Optimus CD in their face. Don't listen to this album IF: You like singers who hesitate You like drummers who don't know what to do You like guitar lines that forget where they started You absolutely can't stand any form of rap, because you don't like it when words rhyme, reason or make you nod your head in rhythm. Listen to this album IF: You have ever snapped your fingers to anything. You want to know what Transformers think of the whole damn thing. You don't mind flipping out and banging your palms on anything within striking distance during the song Sick Day. Worth it.

  • Saw them live and loved em.
    author: Kevin H

The cd was great. Great production wise, being as though it was produced by Jack Endino I would expect no less. They sound just as good as they do live!

  • An excellent follow up

School the Indie Rockers is deeper work than the already enjoyable first album. The reduction in minute long filler pieces helps the album flow a lot and everything just seems like they've found their groove. The rhymes are laid down with practiced grace and having an actual band providing the beats still does wonders to pull you into the experience. The goofy, more traditionally NerdCore pieces don't delve too deep into esoteric territory and the more serious ones add immensely to the credibility of the group. The Wakacons have got to be feeling some pain after this outstanding effort.

  • Sounds Great!!
    author: Ronnie George

I heard "Obey the Moderator" on the rhymetorrents comp and I had to buy the CD.

  • Optimus Rhyme raps my face off
    author: Graham

Autobeat Airbus? Are you kidding me? Who taught this dude to rap that fast? Who taught these dudes to makes beats that tight? I've aquired both albums, can't wait for more; Seattle's music scene never ceases to amaze me. And neither has CD Baby - I mean come on, a follow up email? Word.

  • Awesome all around
    author: Saikou Menji

Optimus Rhyme rocks hard tasty abs. I love the album and even bought one for a friend as a Christmas gift. And the order process through CD Baby was just so . . . .arrrgg hate to say it: cute. I would buy more of the Optimus and would also order again from CD Baby. Keep on with the dehydration photosynthesis!!

  • Fantastic album and super fast shipping
    author: Jimko

The cd itself arrived in the mail a mere few days after i ordered it, and it was all the way from the other side of the US! I had stuff i ordered that was based in NY or closer that took longer. The cd was amazing, very good flow, great songs. Ive been listening to this every night actually haha, its really addictive. I can't wait for more work from them and id gladly buy another cd from them shipped by this store, because it will likely be as amazing as this album i think :D thanks a bunch

  • One Word: Superamazinglyawesome!
    author: Beefy

The entire album is amazing. It's pretty much gem after gem. Wheelie is a robot built strictly for rocking the mic and the rest of the band groove together so well. You will not be sad you got this album.

  • Fine nerdy rhymes
    author: shiggtron

Optimus raised the bar for nerdcore with their first album. Top-notch quality, solid lyrics, they just raised the bar again.

  • great improvment from their first cd
    author: sared

all tracks are great and there isnt short fillers like their last cd. this cd is must have.

  • it schooled my hipster friends
    author: Mike G

Excellent vocal style, speed and precision. Sick Day makes a good first impression, especially for someone who hasn't heard OR before.

  • Optimus Rhyme does not disappoint
    author: Brett S

I was afraid that maybe Optimus Rhyme was one of those bands who has an AWESOME debut album but fails to deliver in their sophomore album. Well, I was wrong. Optimus Rhyme is back with their badass beats and velvety smooth raps. While the lyrical content is sci-fi and deserves the term nerd-core, Wheelie is straight up badass on the mic and I would even go so far as to say that he could keep up with the greats if given the opportunity. I apprehensively take off one star because the music is occasionally repetitive...but not that often and probably not even noticable to a less scrupulous fan. lol. Highly recommended.

  • Yet another tight disc from Optimus Rhyme
    author: Jacoby

The first self-titled disc was awesome, and OR has given us another great disc. Autobeat Airbus may just be the definitive OR fan anthem. :) Not much else to say, really. :)

  • Short but Good
    author: Happysin

This CD is very, very good. It feels a bit short to me, but every song is worthwhile. An excellent second CD, I'd even say a superior successor.

  • Check the UPGRADE, yo!
    author: Chadwickwackacon

If you liked the first album, this one will blow you out of the sky! The Autobeats are in TOP FORM on this one, and as an album as a whole, it's flows along a lot better than the 1st in my opinion - from intake to exhaust, a well crafted machine. I can't wait to hear them transform the PAX'06! W3rD!

  • Optimus Rhyme's best work to date
    author: Mike

While some reiewers will gush about this CD, and tell you it's better than sex, better than chocolate, or even better than chocolate sex, I will attempt to be more balanced. Who the hell am I kidding? It ruled. OR's first albulm took a few listens before it grew on me, but School the Indie Rockers literally jumped out of the case, firmly and securly lodging itself in the pleasure center of my brain. If you like OR, this albulm does not dissappoint.

  • It's like an unlimited supply of awesome
    author: Yamen

This album blew me away. I leved thier first CD, so I figured this would be more of the same. But while this new one definately has that Optimus Rhyme sound, the band's whole performace has evolved to an even higher level. If you're a fan of Optimus Rhyme (or of great music in general) you really deserve to pick up this album right away.

  • The business
    author: Stewart

Loved the first album but really, really can't recommend this enough. Currently trying to educate the Isle of Man by driving around playing this very loudly :-)

  • It's a hit!
    author: Marc P.

This is the best album of 2006 thus far.

  • And with this, greatness has been confirmed...
    author: Joshua Collins

They came, they saw, they rocked. Not content with releasing one of the great albums, nerdcore or otherwise, the Optimus have returned with a torrent of funk! A more refined style lies in wait upon this album, there is the mixed blessing of a distinct lack of Transformers references, but don't let that lull you into a false impression of selling out, oh no, the geekiness is delivered in spades. Heck with songs like 'LEDs' or 'Obey The Moderator', how could there be any question of the Optimus straying from their nerdcore roots. Whereas the last record seemed to revolve around the two biggest tracks (Ford vs Chevy and Fuzzy Dice) and had shorter snippets of quality without going too indepth with the rest of the tracks, here we are greeted with eleven full length anthems. The deserved braggadocio is carried on from the previous album, but is a lot more veiled, more tongue in cheek for the listener to pick up on with greater glee. As with the previous album, the change of tempo between songs provides a very fresh listening experience, from the sharp fast rhymes of 'Sick Day' to the more methodical soulfulness of 'Just Forget It' or 'LEDs'. This is the kind of music which should be played on the radio, on tv, from hovering zepplins stationed around the globe, not the watered down tripe many are force fed. Support this scene, support these talented individuals, and hopefully we will all be rewarded with the chance to see Wheelie drop lyrical bombs in person someday.
