OPPERA

Darkness...
The audience settles down. The curtain rises.
A drum beats...
...and lights flash. A guitar cuts through the velvet silence. A man and a woman stand at center stage, stunning and strong. Her voice is a weapon, a seductive purr that shoots suddenly to a scalp-tingling peak. We've heard her before, but now she's transformed - a whirlwind whose sound and appearance demand attention. His music is pure emotion, a riveting melody that seeks to awaken your deepest senses. We are filled with the joy of discovery, the thrill of newfound love - this bold experience is a revelation.
This is OPPERA--a show that you'll never forget.
For all the passions it stirs, OPPERA is the product of just two people. Martika grew up in the spotlight, became an international phenomenon while still in her teens, and then against all odds traded the baggage of childhood celebrity for rebirth as an artist of deeper complexity. Her partner in life and music, Michael Mozart, hovered behind the scenes as a record producer and session musician; seasoned since age six through work with headliners ranging from The Ohio Players, through Leon Russell to Dave Mason and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith.
OPPERA is the name they've chosen for themselves. The label fits, with its implications of spectacle, sensation, and surprise. On OPPERA, their self-titled CD, they summon contradictory spirits: advanced instrumental and vocal techniques, sophisticated applications of technology...and intensity. They lean toward the latter: OPPERA is as polished as they come, but its raw, emotional urgency is what hits home.
OPPERA makes it clear that these two are masters of their craft. The new CD drives a more central point home: OPPERA comes as much if not more from the gut than the head. In a word, it rocks.
Some of this comes down to the focus of the collaboration between Mozart and Martika. Conceptually ambitious, they capture the excitement of having found their ideal match in each other. It's almost too good to be true, but they did in fact meet in a castle in the south of France, during an all-star songwriter summit. Mozart was in the area for several weeks, working on projects for Barenaked Ladies, Carole King and Hanson, among others. He happened to be around on the day that Martika arrived as a guest of the event.
"Specifically," Mozart recalls, "she walked in on May 17th, at 10:37 p.m." Martika adds, "I was reborn the moment Michael and I met."
Mozart was aware of Martika's history - her first success as a regular on Kids Incorporated, her hit records as a teen pop diva, including three Top Twenty hits and one, "Toy Soldiers," that topped the charts for two weeks and transported her to worldwide acclaim. She, on the other hand, recognized him from somewhere, knew he looked familiar and was trying to figure out where she'd seen this mysterious man before. As they were getting to know each other, he played her some of his songs and she was moved to tears. She could not understand why the world had not yet heard this. Their connection was undeniable.
"It was so instantaneous," Martika says. "We went from 'nice to meet you' and talking for a couple of hours to writing, recording and singing together for the entire next day and night. Then we were up all night again, talking. There was a spiritual connection that translated into the music in a way that everyone around us could hear. Almost immediately he asked me to marry him... and in the next breath asked if I wanted to make music with him as a duo."
Hearing "yes" twice, Mozart rushed back to New York, took a week to wrap up his sessions, vacate his flat, and fly out to join Martika in Los Angeles. On the night of his arrival they moved into a new home, set up a studio, and began recording.
Quickly the OPPERA concept took shape. The main thing was to be eclectic," Mozart remembers. "I wanted it to have as few boundaries as possible, so that from the variety of styles we could solidify a direction that would make the most sense for us and go from there. That's why there's so much to OPPERA; parts of it are very raw, very rock, very pop or very rhythm & blues, with a jazz and classical influence. We honed that down to a sound that won't get us pigeonholed but is defined."
The superficial impression is that OPPERA is aggressive, perhaps dark. Mozart acknowledges this, while cautioning that the picture is subtler than that. "You hear anger on OPPERA from the build-up of negative energies on the planet," he says. "We're harnessing that into what we're doing."
"We want to share the load, both live and in the studio," Mozart insists. "When you're a solo performer, as Martika was before we met, you don't have anybody to fall back on."
"It's extremely self-indulgent too," Martika says. "I always felt like something was missing, that there were only so many textures I could explore."
"And when I went on the road as a musical director for different artists," Mozart says, "I learned that you end up with three of the guys in the band wanting to go in one direction and the other two hating them for it. Being in a duo changes the landscape. She's an extension of me and I'm an extension of her."
"Everything in our music is integral," Martika sums up. "It's about our voices, Mozart's guitar, the melody, the drum sound...you can't take any of it away."
In fact, OPPERA is at least two circles completed - Martika's emergence as a unique performer and singer, and Mozart's as a virtuoso performer and producer. Their union into a single force can't help but change music as it's changed each of their lives.
More than gothic, more than classical, more than rock, more than mysterious, and unapologetically confrontational... more than all of its myriad parts, that force takes shape here as one unforgettable experience.
Call it OPPERA.

With all due respect, I just wanted to say that Martika is the most gorgeous, and beautiful girl/woman of the entire world! I really dream to see her personalmente (at least for 60 seconds) y dejar grabada su imagen en mis pupilas para siempre ya que me parece una mujer superfemenina y hermosa. Arni

But the playing and the songs are good I just think MARTIKA may do better in an other area Such as FERGIE, JUSTIN TIMERLAKE,NELLY FURTADO, and GWEN STEFANI. As for the guy the hard stuff is more him Both are good but in thier own field. MARTIKA is more of a wide artist which I feel need to explore. But what do I know I just have music on JANET JACKSON, BEYONCE,ROGER&ZAPP... but still broke. GARY P.

  • It's Martika... with an EDGE!
    author: Roland Archer

Wow... having last heard from Martika in the early 80's and when she was backed with drum machines and a synthasizer, this CD was like a kick in the butt! It's edgier than what I was used to by her but it's a plus. There are great songs for driving on this disc. Pop it in, slam the accelerator and go. Glad to have her back. And welcome to Michael Mozart.

  • it was long overdue
    author: nick

This cd is something very unique. The music is incredible. It has been long overdue for Martikas comeback and Im glad she chose this material instead of trying to be like all the other over produced untalented pop acts. way to go guys!!!!

  • Album Cover
    author: Kim

I was a little hesitant to listen to the cd due to the cover. There is so much violence in the world I really didn't want to listen to it. But I did, several times, I like most of the songs, & I don't feel that the music is violent at all. You know the old saying "Don't Judge A Book By The Cover" well, the same goes for music as well. Michael & Martika keep rockin', I look forward to your next cd.

  • I love it

When I first heard this CD I knew that Oppera is extremely talented. Martika sounds so fantastic and she sounds mature beyond her age on the songs. The obvious break out hit of this CD is "All Alone", but the other songs are great also. This is a wondeful debut CD.

  • Shoppera Oppera
    author: Miguel

This is such a cool CD. It doesn't really sound like anyone else. I don't hear the comparisons people are commenting about. Oppera sounds very different from what is out there right now, and i think that they might really have a shot at breaking through the boring schlock that is out there at the moment. Martika fans who are stuck in the past won't like it, but hey, Martika is obviously moving forward with her music. I really love 'Train Comes Around'. Martika really sings her butt off!:)

  • not sure yet...
    author: Maria

First off let me start off by saying that EVERYONE is entitled to their own opinion. Not everyone is going to like this CD (or any CD for that matter). So to attack someone just because you don't agree w/ them is completely uncalled for. I find it very immature to tell someone they're jealous. Grow up people! Now for the CD. I am not sure what to make of it yet. I just barely got it, so I have to give it a few more spins before I make up my mind. Thus far there are songs I really really like such as "Upside Down" and "Destiny". But then there are some that I found rathy cheesey such as "Misery" and "Liar". I guess what I am trying to say is thus far it's hit or miss.

  • What are you talking about?
    author: Rachana

This Album Is Amazing. Martika sings great in this cd and her voice is not drowned out by the fantastic music of Michael Mozart. Don’t be negative, I bet you are jealous! I heard the CD and It's really great. 5 stars no doubt at all.

  • Realy, focus on the voice..
    author: Brian

being that this isn't really "Martika" music, but rather the other guy's material..I give it the rating it got. It's such a shame that this music rreally doesn't do Martika justice. She has a great voice, but if only the overproduction didn't treat her voice as a second banana, maybe we could have had a decent album. The music itself sounds like a contrived effort to appeal to Contemporary Radio, a'la Evanescence or even Avril Lavigne. I hope Martika returns with some real music and ditches this train.

Violince....Violince...Violince....This is an amazing debut album by a band that really doesn't sound like any other I have heard in the past few years. They are all extremely talented. You have to buy this CD to understand what I am talking about. I think Martika sounds better than ever these days! I love her voice.. she is just so talented...Michael Mozart..What can I say about him? ...He's the best, a brilliant musician, and his mastery is evident on every track of this debut disc. This is an exciting album, full of surprises, you can never predict where the music is going. And that's what makes this duo so exciting. I highly recommend it

  • A GREAT DEBUT ALBUM!
    author: Tempo

The Violince debut album by Oppera is a cleverly crafted record containing many surprising features that keep listeners' attention, and entices them to want to hear more. These songs are unique because they do not seem to follow the tried-and-true music song formula. The duo seems to be able to create its own meaning of what a song can be. Listeners will not know what to expect from song to song because each song sounds unique, yet somehow they all seem to fit together perfectly to make a very well-done album. The main reason for the varying styles of songs is that the band has two talents; Martika and Michael Mozart. Both have been writing music from an early age. Listening to the album, the band's influences come across clearly (Queen, Thin Lizzy and Led Zeppelin) The way Michael Mozart incorporate string arrangement is brilliant. Despite some low points, the album is a great, and it will be interesting to see what this songwriting duo produces in years to come

  • Damn!!! It is about time!!!
    author: Don Taylor

Singin' and Playin'!!!! Turn this thing all the way up!! Music that finally says something. I have been wondering what ever happened to Martika. I thought that she had disappeared forever, and then....POW!!! Looka Here!! Back. In a duo no less. Double the pleasure, double the fun! I am assuming that 'Say Anything' is the first single, and it should be a huge hit once people find out about it. 'Upside Down', shades of Mr. Hendrix from Mr. Mozart. OK, you can play!!! 'My Life'. ANTHEM!!! My favorite of the entire CD. I keep playing this one over and over. Can't wait to see them pull this off LIVE!! I will be in the front row!!!

Ufff, english or spanish? Violince is a work of art! Violince es una obra de arte. I adore Martika's voice, she sounds fantastic in "All Alone", it is a powerful ballad, where Martika really shines, it's the best song of the album, and may be the song of the year. Adoro la voz de Martika, ella está maravillosa interpretando "All Alone", donde realmente brilla, esta es la mejor canción del disco, y probablemente la canción del año. Congratulations to MM duo!, felicitaciones a Martika y Michael (MM). Nelson desde Santiago de Chile.

  • Welcome back Martika!

'Violince' is so mind blowingly great, you get chills listening to it! All the songs show how truly diverse Oppera is capable of being.

  • Best Wishes for Martika!
    author: Josh

Skilled female vocalists like a Whitney or Celine may have the vocal gymnastics ability and range but there are very few vocalists I have ever heard that have the kind of beautiful voice Martika is so blessed with. When she sings you literally feel what she is singing about and that is an extremely rare talent. Martika has excellent vocal skill but she has that something special added to it. She demonstrated it in "Toy Soldiers" and "Love..Thy Will Be Done". She brings life to lyrics in a way that sounds genuinely meaningful and real. I still get the chills thinking about the first time I heard "Toy Soldiers" and "Love...Thy Will Be Done". I really hope the best for Martika and her latest work. The music industry is in such an uninspired funk right now. To me the latest fad is actually a new genre based on what used to be more of an underground genre known as hip-hop. Now it's strictly "hip-pop" getting the majority of the air play on the radio. There are certainly many listeners out there who have an open mind to welcome something new like "Oppera" and welcome back Martika with open arms showing the world how she has been deeply missed. The problem is breaking through those industry barriers. After listening to the album, there is no doubt in my mind Martika's still got it. My only constructive criticism would be to have used a live drummer instead of using drum tracks. I loved Martika's rapping and would like to see the album lyrics posted on the Oppera site just because at times the words were hard to make out like during the rap parts. All in all I was impressed with how Martika wasn't afraid to reinvent herself the way Madonna has throughout her career. Overall the style of the album is fun and inspiring, and the group shows enormous potential for the future. Now let's see if the music biz can take note.

  • Fantastico!

can I say this in ESPAÑOL!?

This Cd is aweosme, can't really explain how great it is....All I can say is that I had listened to this CD all day long and I was jamming to it....My 5 and 7 year old nephews were even jamming to the CD......My 5 year old nephew loves the song Train Comes 'Round whenever that song came on he would stop whatever he was doing and jam to the song......The OPPERA duo is fantastic, you will have to buy the CD to hear it yourselves on how awesome it is......OPPERA ROCKS THE WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Long Wait Did Not Disappoint
    author: David Fowler

I have been a fan of Martika for nearly 20 years, and every change she makes in her career is better than the last. This time, the collaboration with Michael has brought out the best of both artists, and the result is a CD that I find nearly impossible to stop listening to. Every song is unique, and the CD sounds like nothing I have ever heard. The one drawback is that the lyrics were not included, but hopefully they will be posted on the website soon. Having the lyrics is a neccessity because singing along with this CD is an inevitability.

  • Awesome!!!

I think that the CD is awesome!!! Keep up the good work Martika and Michael!!! DANA

  • A Simply Mind-blowing CD!!!
    author: T-Nil

As a Martika fan since the days of Kids Incorporated, I have followed this beautiful diva since the release of her two albums Martika and Martika's kitchen. Now that I have discovered her comeback in the duo Oppera and have pre-purchased and received an advance copy of Violince, Oppera's debut. To all Martika fans, this album is nothing short of brilliance. Martika and Michael are perfect together as Oppera and their chemistry comes through loud and clear in songs like Say Anything, Misery, Train Comes Round. Violince is totally different from anything out there and with songs like Why, one of my personal favorites, Oppera is about to take the music world by storm. It is fantastic to have Martika back on the music scene but with someone like Michael, a force to be reckoned with by her side. We Martika fans now get more from Martika and Michael. I, personally, could not be a better fan of these two talented individuals. Violince is simply mind-blowing and a work of very quality music. I highly recommend this cd because I can see it now, Oppera winning many grammies!!!!

    author: Jason Whitt

I just received "Violince," the debut cd from "oppera" in the mail today. After my first listen to the CD I was almost speechless because I was in awe at how magical their musical sound is. I Their voices sound pefect together. Every song on the CD is powerful and conveys such emotion. I know it's hard to fathom but Martika was great as a solo artist, but in my opinion she sounds even better with Michael Mozart. My favorite song on the cd would have to be " All Alone". I believe this is just the beginning of great things to come from this amazing duo!

  • What took you so long?
    author: Charlie Rivers

It is so great to have Martika back, what took you so darn long? Girl sounds great. Especially on songs like "All Alone", "Why?" and "Upside Down". Where's "Goodbye" (it was on the site's album preview. it was my fave, sad to not see it here)???? As for "Violince" I tend to prefer the songs that let her voice shine, some of them she's a little drowned out. That was my only complaint, so I had to take a star away for that. Otherwise a solid pop/rock effort.

  • a MASTERPIECE!
    author: molly nicole smith

that word has a new meaning cause this cd is really... well, i can't think of the right word,-you'll just have to hear the whole thing for yourself. when you hear its beauty and its strength, you'll know what i mean when i say its a masterpiece. it has everything- strings, guitars, voice. this cd is really unique, a whole new style, one that is rapped around each instrument until it is a distinct feeling or a place in time, one that can't be explained.

  • Long awaited return of Martika delivers one of the best albums this year.
    author: Jeff K

This is an amazing CD. The long awaited return of Martika was well worth it to put this incredible cd. It is truly an original. It's a great mix of rock and pop mixed with classical. Martika's voice shines throughout. Highlights include the haunting ballad All Alone, the edgy guitar driven Misery, and the opening track Say Anything. Hopefully Oppera has the success it deserves.

  • It is a greatly diverse cd with a new unique style!
    author: Ian Arthur

This is a great comeback group for Martika which will hopefully throw her back into the spotlight where she belongs. Just listening to her sing on this cd makes me remember why I always like her music. Michael is a great addition to mix up the sound of the music. It is great to have a different sounding group than every bland artist out there now. Everyone should give this cd a listen, you won't regret it.
