notes

It's eclectipolipop, y'all!

BUSHSONGS is the result of ONE BLACK LUNG's eyes being superglued to the Bush Regime Microscope of Horrors, going back to when W was still Chief Executioner and Governor of Texas. By the time Prince George assumed the title of Curmudgeon-in-Chief, OBL’s "they did WHAT?" meter was well on it's way to blowing a major gasket.

Barely avoiding jackets that tie in the back, ONE BLACK LUNG wrote BUSHSONGS to document and come to terms with the assault carried out by the Bush regime on our once-great nation. "Leader of the Free World", "Mission Accomplished", "Boy King", "The Way of the Dodo" poured out until there was one song for every letter in GEORGEWBUSH.

Frog-Explodin' Li'l George, Waterboardin'-Face-Shootin' Chain-E, Everybody's-a-Pedophile-Terrorist-Lover Karl Rove and Donny I-Was-Saddam's-Enabler Rumsfeld tried every NSA trick in the book, but they couldn’t stop ONE BLACK LUNG from releasing BUSHSONGS upon a largely apathetic and trans-fat engorged world.

BUSHSONGS wouldn't be BUSHSONGS without Jimmy Holloway's stellar drums, Carrie Miller's Richy-Rich cello (complete with that shrill trill) and the biting guitar work of Brian Collins musically dressing down the Boy King.

  • Bushsongs - Politics You Can Dance To
    author: David Weems

For an album with such portentous subject matter, One Black Lung's new album Bushsongs is disarmingly bright and sunny. With lyrics worthy of a Master's thesis and ingenious instrumental work, it dissects G.W. Bush and his presidency in a way perhaps even more savage than Fahrenheit 911. And yet it plays like a pop album and is never less than toe-tapping fun. The opener, "Leader of the Free World", sounds just like W singing about himself. If he could sing. Or write. Or read. As with most of the CD, it's actually very funny until you stop to think about it. Two songs later comes the painfully short masterpiece "Mission Accomplished", whose title says it all. A personal favorite. As is the funky highpoint, "Belief". It's about the dangerous contradictions in people who are SO sure they're right. And you can dance to it! The amazing "Way of the Dodo" is very beautiful but very sad, and more than a little apocalyptic. It posits the possible end of the American dream, while holding onto a glimmer of hope. The hilarious "Richy Rich Man" is flat-out comedy, though too close to the truth to be considered satire. The closer, "Merge", is a stunner. It's a clarion call for unity and offers a real plea for consensus and possibility. All the songs are beautifully written, performed and recorded with all four members at the top of their form. Highest recommendation. David Weems
