notes

"...intelligent witty lyrics... graceful with spacey intentions... a pop masterpiece..."
- Smother

"This is a great album which you will be listening to time and time again."
- Guitar Noise

"Dreams of Autocrashes, the debut CD from India Records darling The Normans, prove indie rock doesn't have to be a one-dimensional diatribe of misery. Brent Baldwin crafts deeply layered songs of quiet intensity that incorporate gentle, Brian Wilson-like harmonies over intricately woven guitar melodies. His transparent, ethereal vocals conjure the spirit of Elliott Smith, leaving the listener craving more. This is the genius of Baldwin's songwriting; he is able to craft interesting musical ideas but doesn't have to beat you over the head with them."
-University Star

"Extremely unique... a pop smorgasbord... lovers of good pop music will surely appreciate what Normans frontman Brent Baldwin has created here"
- Indieville

"When you are in the mood to plug in an album, but ending your life is not in your foreseeable future, Dreams of Autocrashes provides a musically similar but lyrically pleasant alternative to the morose Death Cab for Cutie or oft-melancholy Elliott Smith... an excellent debut album."
- CD Reviews

"'Writing' stands out because its melody is simple and tough... transforms empty-headedness into a bold Beach Boy strut-and-swagger worthy of Frank Black. It'll satiate your thirst for drink, initiate your interest in posing, and become a quick crowd favorite."
- Splendid

"'Heavens to Betsy' is stark, resonant, almost monotonous... it has a dirgelike appeal, but it's addictive. You want to hear it rise and rise...
the only moment of disappointment is when it ends."

This has been on my ipod for a year, and I couldn't fathom a roadtrip without it. Highly recommended, and one of the finest of albums of the year.

  • Progressive, original and outstanding!

I have listened to this CD many times since I purchased it back in February. I hear new surprises at each listen. Beautiful vocals and thoughtful lyrics. It's a regular in my disk changer and one of my very favorites albums.

  • fantastic

Did someone forget to give NRBQ their lithium! These guys rock or touch that exposed nerve on every tune. Buy this disk now. If it doesn't make it to your favorites section I'll buy a Brittany Spears disk!

  • Beautifully haunting...

16 perfect little stories - sad, but still holding on to hope. This album is a gem, and Brent Baldwin's voice gives me the goosebumps in such a wonderful way...

  • This album is great!

I had never heard of these guys until a friend mentioned them and have been very impressed with the variety and general talent of these artists on this CD-particularly the lead singer.

  • I LOVE this album!

Some friends recommended these guys to me, and was I ever blown away! From the devil-lurking-in-the-woods tranquility of "Emily" to the face-melting outro of "Writing," The Normans cover so much musical territory and yet somehow manage to keep their sonic identity so beautifully intact. "Heavens to Betsy" is one of the best tracks I've heard this year. Awesome stuff!

  • Great sound and great lenght for the price

This is a very mood oriented CD. The production stays lush througout, and even though the instrumentation is quite varied, the airy feel of the album keeps it from being cluttered. Genre is hard to describe, but it is a good mix of emo and pop. Very intelligent lyrics, well produced instrumentation, and a very good buy, clocking in at around 45 minutes

  • Music that draws you in and doesn't let go!
    author: Karen

One of the best albums I've bought in a long time! I've really enjoyed it beginning to end. While there's plenty to grab you right away - the lush melodies of Dreams of Autocrashes and especially Wishes come to mind - many of the songs get better the more you listen to them. In particular, Letter, which is too subtle to really appreciate over the computer speakers, reveals itself as a perfect little gem of a song on cd. My favorite, though, is Bad Joke, a haunting and heartbreaking take on a situation most of us can relate to. Taken altogether, the album has a personal and intimate feel that makes for a really nice experience. By the end I feel like I've just had a really good conversation with someone I've only just met, but will always sort of remember talking to.
