Composer/Performer Nancy Magarill is the type of artist that New York City is known for - the kind who pushes her art to the limit. AN ASCAP award winning emerging songwriter and a regular guest composer at NYU’s classical studio, her music has been described as sultry, sensual, sexy and haunting. She is a poetic storyteller whose lyrics are in a league of their own.
Now with “Down below the Rodeo” she ventures into a new territory not only musically but as producer as well.
Half string quartet, half rock band, the Sirius String quartet blends the precision of classical music with the energy of rock and roll. The musicians, graduates of Yale, Harvard, Juilliard and the Manhattan School of music, are all skilled improvisers. Whether playing acoustically or with electronic effects they push beyond the normal sonic vocabulary associated with string instruments. From Lincoln Center and the Koln Triennale to the Knitting Factory and CBGB's, the Sirius quartet makes itself at home in a wide range of venues and musical styles.

What started as a simple recording Project quickly evolved into a piece of art, an obsession, fusing the driving energy of the classic string quartet with powerful lyric-driven soundscapes. Spectral impressionistic strings merge with electronica and poetic Lyricism. Rather than using the strings as accompaniment to the song, they have created new works; half song with classical compostion. And These are not just songs; These are diamonds wrapped delicately around cello, violin and viola with the perfect blend of electronica. and the result is stunning.
there are certainly several standout pieces; The first, “the Unborn Children”; set to a poem written by the late Spalding Gray. There is also the fusion of the old and new with “I’ll Wait for you” a new setting of Kreisler’s “Praeludium and Allegro” bringing Lucia Micarelli (Josh Groban, Jethro Tull, TSO) and Daniel Mintseris (marianne faithful) into the mix. And there’s the Patti Smith inspired “Dirty Old Man” that truly sits on a bed of strings and the raw and sparse “Words” that leave you craving for more.

author: Roberto GiammancoI found Nancy, I don't know how, on My Space and then listened 2 minutes of each song here at cdbaby. Ordered the cd straight away. Everything on this record is really great. Great songs with a powerfull interpretation. Every tune, doesn't matter if slow or fast, give you a feel of inner energy. Musicians and arrangements are of brave and creative. The mix between classical instruments and electronic, soudns very natural and you must have a great taste to be able to do that. It is from Radiohead - In Rainbows that I didn't listen to music at this level.
