A genuine, authentic jazz experience. Not an homage to the classic jazz of the likes of the Grant Green, Lou Donaldson, John Patton collaborations but rather, executing their own vision and being true to the spirit of their own souls.

notes
In this world, time is the master. Being in the right place at the right time is critical to being successful. Such is the case with The Nick Rossi Set’s debut full-length album “On The Outset”, proudly presented by Hammondbeat Records.
Nick Rossi has been perfecting his craft in and around the San Francisco Bay area mod and jazz scenes in various acts since 1990, and as leader of The Nick Rossi Set since 1997. Earlier incarnations of the Set have released several 7” vinyl singles and compilation tracks, but the vibe for the album was ever so elusive.
Finally, the band gelled with Nick (organ) leading, Steve Burke (guitar), Sameer Gupta (drums), and Aaron Rossi (tenor sax). The soul of the group as well as the interplay between the members was honed in extensive live performances during 2003 and 2004.
With the band at its’ creative best, and armed with 7 original tunes, legendary Coast Recorders was booked, and the rest as they say is history. “On The Outset” was recorded in 2 sessions they way jazz was meant to be recorded – live in the studio with no overdubs, using vintage recording equipment and techniques, alongside the latest in high fidelity technology. This was followed by a careful mix by Carl Rusk at Record Recorders, NY. The result? A genuine, authentic jazz experience! Not an homage to the classic jazz of the likes of the Grant Green / Lou Donaldson / John Patton collaborations, but rather executing their own vision…being true to the spirit of their own souls and to the spirit of those who have gone before.
Nick Rossi was patient when it came to “On The Outset”. He waited until the timing was right and the Nick Rossi Set was creatively able to deliver on the vision of “On The Outset”. In retrospect, the decision was right on the money, as is the album!
“On The Outset” is also available in an exclusive hi-fi monaural mix on limited edition vinyl from Flare Records.
