Niall Connolly is widely regarded among his peers as one of Ireland's most promising young songwriters. His debut album 'Songs from a Corner' (2001) went to No.1 in the Hot Press indie charts and helped Connolly build a loyal fan base in Ireland as well as affording him the opportunity to tour Britain and mainland Europe.His follow up 'as tomorrow creeps from the east' (2003) opened further doors for him.
Released on the independent Cork based c.u. records label, Niall's music has already received airplay in Ireland, Toronto and Sydney. 'As tomorrow creeps from the east' has also bizarrely recorded internet sales in as yet untoured territories including Japan and New Zealand.
Niall Connolly is currently back in the studio with his band completing his third album.

Connolly Peaks
author: John TullyClocking in at just over 35 minutes, his second album surely represents Connolly's finest moments in the recording studio. 11 tracks of rich lyricism and layered and densely textured musicianship, these songs stand head and shoulders above much of modern-day Irish songwriting. Connolly blends the emotional intensity of the music and vocal with the more objective and observational style of many of his lyrics to create a deft balance between the personal and the universal. He also adds a sense of place absent in much lesser writing, namely that of the streets, pubs and late-night routes home of his native Cork, painting a rich mural of his beloved city on the Lee and developing themes first touched upon on his strong debut 'Songs From A Corner'. Wonderful playing by Aisling Fitzpatrick on Cello and by Connolly himself on often finger-picked acoustic guitar are the highlights of the recording, the warmness of which is in keeping with the fact that much of it was done on reel-to-reel tape. The album's relative brevity is more than compensated for by the fact that there is not a single weak song in the playlist. Strong upbeat tracks like 'I will come and see you soon' and the wryly humourous yet somehwhat poignant 'The Long Weekend' stand alongside some of Connolly's lesser known tracks (in a live setting at least) such as 'First Names Only', 'Grape or Grain' and especially the insidiously seductive grower that is 'Shell in the City' to give the album a depth and breadth of a true modern classic. The timeless 'When the sun is on your back', meanwhile is surely one of the more memorable moments in recent Irish music. This album confirms Connolly as a songwriter in the vein of Cohen's lyricism and Guy Clark's humanistic warmth who is nonetheless a singular voice and one who deserves serious recognition on a wide scale.
