notes

The idea behind The New Digital Sound started around 1995 in dirty basements strewn throughout various Massachusetts suburbs by Copelinn. His D. I. Y. approach was a result of frustration with the then dead local band scene. Early NDS songs were recorded using no more than a multitude of guitar stomp boxes, outdated drum machines, and simple analog four track tape recorders. While the early recordings were crude and imperfect, they showed a glimmer as to what direction Copelinn and The New Digital Sound was going.

It was around this time that Copelinn discovered artists such as Moby, DJ Shadow, Roni Size, Atari Teenage Riot, William Orbit, Underworld, The Pixies, The Clash, Tricky, Nine Inch Nails, Front 242, Joy Division, KMFDM, My Life With Thrill Kill Cult, Marilyn Manson and others. He found himself completely enamored with the idea of self-production and computer technology to achieve it. In 1999, amidst pre millennium hysteria, he befriended The Jack Bohlen Book Club brainchild Kevin Murphy while working a local record store. It was a result of this friendship that Copelinn then began his ever changing production style and D. I. Y. approach to musical creation: create the most dissonant music possible using technology. Armed with an HP Pavilion computer, he began writing his first album, which became a self-titled debut released in 2001. The album, all things considered, was a success -- garnering airplay, reviews, downloads and CD sales worldwide.

In early 2004, Copelinn returned to his studio to produce a follow-up entitled, "The Depressed American Dream," which was released in April of 2005. Again, after receiving similar success, The New Digital Sound had determined its' fate and direction in the indie music scene. After recieving more than 50,000 downloads on Bearshare.com for the track "Exclude 17", The New Digital Sound was starting to attract ever-increasing fanbase online. To date, the band's website (thenewdigitalsound.org) has seen over over 4 million visitors.

After a brief break to produce and perform with the computer-laced rock outfit The Killbabies, Copelinn stepped back into his studio to work on new music for future releases by NDS.

This year The New Digital Sound will be releasing a follow-up entitled "Species Protector." This album promises to be a complete departure from earlier efforts, yet, still remains true to The New Digital Sound's original purpose. Aided by a host of indie musicians, Copelinn plans to take his electronic freak show to a club near you very soon.

Welcome to the show.

  • cool album
    author: Michael Washington

Is it just me or does the entire electronic scene nowadays begin and end with "boom-boom-smash"? This CD does NOT do that, it actually pulls you in and makes you think about things and (dare I say) enjoy music again. This CD is reviewed just about everywhere online so read up, take a listen and grab a copy for yourself. At $5.00, this is a solid buy. It is also my understanding that they're available on I-tunes too if that helps any of you downloaders out there...Peace.

  • I like it

Not a bad disc. I picked this up on-sale and loved it. Best like 5 bucks I've spent in awhile, plus I got two other cool CD's too. You and Delicate are sick as hell. When is the new one coming out? Are you touring anytime soon? Impatiently waiting for the follow-up. Hurry up would you!

DJ Copelinn has created an album that will leave a lasting impression, The New Digital Sound. Successfully creating 13 energizing tracks, The New Digital Sound takes you on a journey that will cause many different emotions to arise. Copelinn has created his own style and sound that puts him in a category in which not too many other musicians can match. Using different elements from piano notes, to drum beats, to guitar chords, to bass drops, songs such as The Meaning and Minimal make you wanting more as the music fades and the track ends. All in all, The New Digital Sound is without a doubt a record that is worth checking out. Whether you are a fan of rock, pop, or techno, The New Digital Sound has something that everyone can connect with, and will make a very enjoyable listening experience.

  • bought it on-sale...sweet!

Good stuff. I grabbed a copy of it a few weeks ago (it was on-sale)but, I was blown away. Copelinn has something here, and for like 5 bucks you should grab a copy and see for yourself. Dark trippy vibe. Like Moby meets NIN and DJ Shadow... worth the cash that is my take... can't wait for the follow-up.. peace

  • April 2003 issue of Cosmik
    author: DJ Johnson

DJ Don Smith's vision of the new digital landscape isn't necessarily new, but it sure is a whole lot more interesting than the conclusions most others are reaching. I'm sick to death of hearing those da-da-da-da-da fakebeats cross out of their own genres and into everything else in the electronic frontier. Smith must be, too, because there are only a few moments during the course of this entire album that anything like rapid-fire drum machinery can be heard. Instead, Smith takes us into a world of textures and dreams, not at all for those with thin skin, as he populates his landscapes with voices that say the darndest things. They're all sampled from familiar events and films, though I can only place one sample with absolute certainty, and that's the distant voice of Vincent Bugliosi speaking about the horror of the Tate-LaBianca murders in 1969. Other voices whisper things that keep you focused and curious as the synths and piano spin dark cotton candy all around you. It begins to feel like you're being led somewhere by many voices while the spooky soundtrack underscores your journey, but it's just one voice, really, and that's DJ Don Smith. There are a few comparisons that could be made with mega-stars, but those people are now overplaying with their expensive new toys and A-list recording equipment. The truth is I'm most reminded of coLeSLAw when I listen to The New Digital Sound. I've been waiting for someone else with that kind of musical sensibility and creativity. Ah, at last.

  • another splendid reveiw for the debut record
    author: Splendid E-ZINE.com

There's an inward drive to the minimal beats and keyboard melodies that New Digital Sound layers over rusty metallic backgrounds; they push into you with repetition and simplicity, but remain restrained and anticipatory. It's a cinematic, mood-enhancing sound: bleak, electronic-noir.Tracks such as "Expressing of Sorrow for a Dead Person" and "Gone and Nobody Knew", though carefully pieced-together, center on one, or perhaps two elements. "Expressing of Sorrow", for instance, is built upon a strong electro beat that's surprisingly hip given its bleak setting; it pauses at the minute-mark to introduce a vocal sample, then rolls out the CD's most potent spacy synth. "Gone and Nobody Knew"'s beat is drenched with a great echo effect; on headphones, your skull will feel like a hollow metal ball with a drummer in the middle."The Meaning", "You" and "The Delicate, The Fragile" employ trickling piano melodies to pique your interest. They linger in the air, adding a much-needed sonic glow to the otherwise skeletal sounds. "The Delicate, The Fragile"'s mannered tempo and fuzzy sample recalls the melancholy dip at the end of Lift Yr Skinny Fists' first track, while "You"'s spaced-out melody contrasts with a speedier, albeit borderline subliminal, beat....New Digital Sound falls narrowly short of greatness.-- Josh Kazman

  • An appeal to record labels to SIGN the new digital sound...This music should NOT
    author: Music Emissions

It’s usually MusicEmissions policy to not review any CD’s that come to us in CDR (for demo purposes) format but something told me to check out DJ Don Smith’s project called The New Digital Sound. Don Smith is in the category of IDM, along the lines of Autechre and other Warp artists. No really, this is a valid comparison and if you are a label looking for an electronica artist along the lines of Sybarite, you should get in touch with The New Digital Sound. Some of the tracks are darker than others but some actually have a shiny feel to them. The 13 tracks are diverse enough that you don’t get bored. An interesting track here is “Devoid of Emotion” where a news sample talking about a “bizarre murder” where Don keeps it repeating. The music is well produced. There are no glitches that I can hear. So much GOOD MUSIC like this goes unnoticed amongst all the rest. (indie 2003)

    author: Mike

Hey guys, I was checking out the page and some tracks, and I gotta say, the CD sounds pretty good. The vibe on the CD is pretty lo-fi and dark, especially "Expressing of Sorrow for a Dead Person". I gotta say, that track is just f***ing strange but, I am loving the vibe on it. When is Species Protector coming out, I am hungry for a follow-up CD.

  • Review by correspondent Matt Worfe regarding the debut release by N.D.S.
    author: Matt Worfe

The age of The New Digital Sound has arrived. The debut disc serves up textures that might put listeners in the mind of Nine Inch Nails, Tool, or the like. The music therein contains voice samples describing mass murder, sexual perversion and terminal sickness amidst the dark, eerie, digitally synthesized soundscapes. There are, however, some energizing beats and grooves to be found on the album's thirteen tracks. “You" delivers a funky, drum machine beat beneath simple, melancholy piano chords and melodies, and "Minimal" conveys multi-layered, repeating keyboard lines creating a spooky, celestial effect. Smith says, "My hope is to turn N.D.S. into a live show as well." That is one show that I would love to see. — M. Worfe

Can I say more than that? It's dope. So dope.8/10 stars.

  • CD is a definite winner
    author: Ryan Matthews

New Digital Sound has a winner here. Each track on this cd is unique. The piano bits are awesome and well spaced into the music. It can be a bit haunting at times, but overall a nice debut. Can't wait for the next release!

  • Debut CD Review
    author: Jerry Kranitz

From Aural Innovations #22 (January 2003) The New Digital Sound is a solo project from DJ Don Smith, who combines ambience, techno beats and voice samples to create music that is minimal but melodic, and often includes beats, though not for the purpose of laying down a groove. Influenced by artists like Moby and the Chemical Brothers, DJ Don seems to focus his attention most on the resulting atmosphere and the music has a soundtrack quality that is always image inducing. "You" is a standout track with techno beats, melodic piano bits, intermittent rumbling drones, and voice samples. The contributions from each piece are simplistic but DJ Don's use and placement of the separate parts makes for an interesting whole. "Devoid Of Emotion" is a curious piece on which ambient space waves provide the backdrop for a disturbing news sample about some murders that took place. A very short but intriguing track. "The Unfortunate Reflection Of War" is a little different. Multiple howling waves make for a bit of a freakout piece that aptly reflected its title in the imagery it conjured up. "Pigment" is an eerie spacey track with oddball echoed voice samples. Overall an interesting listen.

  • The New Digtal Sound gets an A-
    author: C.E. Pelc, FM sound.net

The New Digital Sound, The New Digital Sound Grade: A- On the enclosed press information for The New Digital Sound’s self-titled album, we’re instructed to file this album under the likes of “ambient” and “abstract.” Boy, were they not kidding. I don’t even think those terms fit the bill here—while a few tracks like “You” are obviously electronic, some like the album’s opener “The Meaning” are like nothing I’ve ever heard before. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing, just means its something you have to get used to. DJ Don Smith of The New Digital Sound unleashes his entire creative process on this album, leaving not a whole lot left to be discovered or desired for those looking for a new album of electronic goodness to clutch tightly to their chests. The New Digital Sound is without a doubt not an album for everyone, but is an album for many that are looking for something new and thought-provoking. —C.E. Pelc

  • The debut CD is solid.
    author: AmbienTrance.org

Don Smith, creator of The New Digital Sound, admits that his "obsession with the art of sampling has reached somewhat absurd proportions"... but for the most part he channels it into his other obsession for making (often) drum-dominated experimentronic noise/music... Peaceful piano notes sparsely tinkle across The Meaning, backed by a continual blurt-beat and later, prerecorded mediaspeak. Bass-booming percussion and light piano play together again in You, this time underscored by occasional drones. Some solid work here; I imagine future releases will only improve. B-

  • Review for debut CD by N.D.S.
    author: Phil Lobardi

DJ Don Smith lets his creativity loose on The New Digital Sound, and the results are really quite pleasant. Sometimes haunting, sometimes upbeat, Smith succeeds at putting the standard abstract elements together to create 13 different pieces of music. I kept hoping for something to surprise or amaze me, but sometimes it’s not realistic to have high expectations without any prior knowledge of the artist. All in all, The New Digital Sound is interesting, but not fascinating; strong, but not spectacular. Still, I can give this record a high recommendation: it’s the perfect starting point for any newcomer who’s interested in hearing abstract or ambient music. Since it contains all the standard ingredients mixed together so well, one listen and you’ll know if you’ve stumbled upon a new favorite style of music.
