Incorporating the pulse and diversity of his east coast roots, coupled with his unique sense of humor and sensitivity, he has created a style all his own. Nelson's all original tracks on TATTOO consist of upbeat, instrumental grooves, with unforgettable hooks. Nelson's audience is not limited to the contemporary/smooth jazz lover. Many who are typically not interested in jazz, seem to find themselves extremely attracted to Nelson's music as well.

Nelson's professional career began on the Las Vegas strip where he played keyboards for many headliners such as Dionne Warwicke and Frank Sinatra. Soon he became musical director/arranger for many entertainers including Don Rickles, Ben Vereen, Ann Jillian, Lorna Luft, and Clint Holmes.

When Nelson relocated to Los Angeles in 1985, he branched out to other areas of the music industry. His television credits include 3 seasons as co-composer/arranger on Comedy Central's highly rated series "Prime Time Glick" starring Martin Short and co-composer and Musical Director on "Viva Variety" also on Comedy Central. He scored the children's show "Weinerville" for Nickelodeon and the Stick Stickly Promos for Nickelodeon, as well as songwriting for the beloved Lamb Chop, on Shari Lewis' "Lamb Chops Play-Along." In the mid 1990's Nelson was Musical Director and co-wrote the theme song for WWOR-TV's talk/variety show "New York at Night" starring Clint Holmes. Nelson also had the honor of collaborating with Billy Crystal writing "out take" songs for Crystal's character, the One-Eyed Monster, in the Disney/Pixar animated feature, "Monsters, Inc."

Nelson has also scored three musicals to date. "Comfortable Shoes", a bi-racial, biographical story about acceptance, based on the life of collaborator Clint Holmes, has enjoyed two successful runs, one at the Royal George Theatre in Chicago and the other at the Papermill Playhouse in Millburn, New Jersey. Nelson and Clint were nominated for the prestigious Jeff Award for "Best New Work". Nelson also scored "Pirates" for Princess Cruises featuring an all-original score, a first for the cruise line industry. "Dennis The Musical" an adaptation of the popular Dennis The Menace comic strip character, marked Nelson's initiation into the world of musical theater.

Currently, Nelson heads his own production company, Marinade Enterprises, which has produced music for over three dozen live shows for clients ranging from Princess Cruises to Dr Pepper. Nelson's arrangements can also be heard every Memorial Day and Independence Day on PBS TV's Capital Concert series.

From his contemporary, smooth-jazz to TV to musical theatre, Nelson continually surprises and engages his audience.

  • Great arrangements, Wonderfuly infectious melodies....
    author: Jim Kurkimilis

Loved the Arrangements of each song, the melodies (especialy Tattoo and Phunny Bone) stay with you long after listening to them. Also this rythm section is realy tight, great technique and exicution, perfect for the rythm orientation of the up tunes. A great CD, I hope there will be more to come from Nelson.

  • a cd that makes you feel good inside and forget your troubles. I loved it!
    author: donna cataldo

I found the CD to be a nice balance of uplifting, toe tapping jazz tunes along with a few very nice sentimental sounding songs, "we're partners now" in particular. It truly is a feelgood CD that I would highly recommend to anyone who loves the wonderful sounds of jazz. Nelson truly is a masterful musician. (I actually brought the tattoo CD to my big birthday bash and had the DJ play a couple of songs). Definitely worth checking out!
