Night Crawlers
Presenting
Cellar Live
By George W. Harris
If you think the last worthwhile jazz import from Canada was Oscar Peterson, you're in for a treat with this hard hitting B3 Quintet featuring some the funkiest music on either side of the border. Recorded at the Cellar Nightclub, located at "Crossroads of Jazz" at Broadway and Dunbar in Vancouver BC, "Presenting" features music so raw and authentic that it was recorded from digital onto a 2 inch tape in order to give the music as warm a feel as possible. And if they wanted warm, they really got hot, as the music is burning the entire hour set. Ian Hendrickson-Smith (tenor) and Cory Weeds (alto) mix it up with guitarist Dave Sikula to create a front line that is the closest thing to Booker T and the MGs as you'd dare to hope for. Chris Gestrin's B3 is wailing the entire night, and Jesse Cahill's drumming is propelling the band without any reprieve. Songs like John Patton's "Funky Mama" and Jack McDuff's "Sanctified Waltz" are dripping with grease. Even the Stax Record standard, JJ Jackson's "But It's Alright" gets a foot stomping treatment. The band is in overdrive on Horace Silver's "Cookin' At The Continental", and almost spontaneously combusts towards the end. If you're driving to this music, keep an eye on your speedometer; you'll catch yourself accelerating to the music and might get a speeding ticket!

Crazy Assed Cheeky Jazz
author: Percy Upminster 657Not what i expected but better than the low budget record company presented. Simply put i like it. We here in the hood prefer to call it ghetto powered hijinx. Soul sisters & nervous titters can get off on the outrageous organ solos. I know our gang did just that. The horns and the drumming are a nice touch. Whether you dig 60's jazz or 70's cheeky funk your proofs in this sandwich. Night Crawlers are like a horny bunch of Collegiate Creepers and Bedroom Ballers messing up the silk sheets. Dig in Chester.
Corn Bread & Buds 4 U!
author: Bud "Buster" Zang ( from Nanjing China)Finally!!! These old school smoothies minus the the blender & fruit are here for the taking! Super sonic dual Sax-a-Phonics blast your bowels into the next millenium! Have Mercy! Hope so! Weeds and Mr. Hendrickson-Smith are a lethal combo on the reeds. They are better than a strong martini and a long drag on the Bong! Almost as good as a corned beef on rye and a Samuel Adams beer! Mostly these fellas have tone, rythym and a great sense of history! This band does indeed cook up a nice Bar-b'Que! Layering on the grooves with the ease and precision of a master southern chef...with a fridge full of cajun sass!!
Sultry 60' ish Stuff
author: Ms. Lucy Lei of San FranPretty good effort by these modern muscians. Night Crawlers of Canada: have attempted with style, to re-create and formulate some of the older school organ gangs. They did a really good job on this project. I would say not bad. listen to the recently released 1965 classic Blue Note Japanese release John Patton:'Blue John' and judge 4 your self? P.S. Hey Mr. Diddler, guess what I'm diddling now?
" High Concept" keeps it clean...
author: Myron "The Diddler" MartinezGet your copy of 'Blue John' out and resample the elders! I did and found that these Night Crawlers had more than Gumbo & Corn Bread in common. These cats just play for the fun of it. The duo of Weed's & Hendrickson-Smith brought back memories of John Patton's combos and Grant Green's working bands to mind. Dave Sikulla's the leader and keeps the chords interesting...while mainting his own artistic merit. Great to hear such a voluminous band gigging' it all the way live from Vancouver, B.C.
