notes
An Cuimhin Leat is the first CD from Navan, followed by Mairneas, and Lowena.
From Madison, Wisconsin this is Celtic unaccompanied song, on four voices, in the languages of Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Brittany, Cornwall and the Isle of Man. Navan's melodies, harmonies and arrangements are a delicious blend of traditional and original, with lyrics drawn directly from the Celtic literary repertoire.
"It rooted me to the floor by my very bones."
-- Gearóid Ó hAllmhuráin, Irish musician, historian and author of A Pocket History of Irish Traditional Music, (Dublin: O'Brien, 1998).
Less than a year after Navan's formation, the international Irish music organization Comhaltas Ceoltóirà Éireann took notice and invited the group to be a featured performer at the 1998 Midwest Regional Fleadh Cheoil in Detroit, Michigan. Navan has since traveled far and wide performing at Celtic festivals and concert halls, often in conjunction with workshops in Gaelic traditional singing. Their debut CD, An Cuimhin Leat (Do You Remember), was released in March of 2000 and currently receives airplay worldwide. Including songs in Irish, Scottish Gaelic and Cornish, it offers a tantalizing glimpse of long-hidden but still vibrant Celtic musical and literary traditions. Released in May of 2003, their second CD, Mairneas (Voyage), expands their recorded repertoire to include works in each of the six living Celtic languages. This year they add a third CD, Lowena (Joy).
"Therapeutic!"
-- Tim Dennehy, announcer for Ireland's national radio station RTÉ (Raidió TeilifÃs Éireann).
With overwhelmingly positive reactions to both their CDs and their live performances, Navan continues to carry their unique blend of vocals to an ever increasing audience. Their addictive harmonies are sure to refresh even the most satiated fan of Celtic music.

An Cuimhin Leat
author: Kay McGuireAfter hearing Navan perform Tuar Guil, I knew I had to have the CD and I love all of the music on it. Wonderful, authentic music.
Tuar Guil
author: SGT FONwonderful song, i know the tune as "Sally Garfens" and it is why i learned the irish whistle, so i could play it for my then 4 year old daughter...
An Cuimhin Leat
author: Ken SavageNavan is extraordinary in every sense. Their interpretations of traditional Celtic songs are wonderful in their harmonies. Their voices are so pure that a musical accompaniment would diminish the beauty of their melodies. This music touches the soul.
outstanding both with regard to the music and its' swift delivery.
author: b,mcdonnellI am playing all 3 regularly.
author: B. EastmanThe CD's were excellent quality.
When I heard your music on NPR I knew I had to have the cd
author: Art MillsI caought an interview on NPR and throughly enjoyed the music and when I found there were 3 cd available bought them all. I have enjoyed all the cds.
Quite enjoyable
Tres tres bon!
author: MathieuWhat else is there to add to all the previous reviews? Nothing probably! ;-) The voices are simply thrilling!
Soothing and Memorable
author: Robyn H.What can I say that others haven't said before me? This is my favorite of the three CD's by this group and I think its due to the simplicity of the songs and the complex weaving of melodies. Although I love the other CD's, this is the one that convinced me to buy the whole set.
A Celtic Heritage
author: KellyThis CD is one of the best to help the imagination turn back the hands of time to aid in knowing and understanding ones heritage.
This is the stuff! Give these people a listen!
author: Darren RaleighThis is the stuff! If you'vee been looking for that Celtic magic and are sore tired of overproduced, self-conscious, pretentious wank, give these people a listen. Their work is perfectly balanced, unpretentious and plain - they just lay it out there and it's clear that they feel that their voices, alone, and the love they obviously feel for the music is enough. And you will too!
Paralyzing!
author: JenniferWarning--addictive (not just craic, but crack!). Will give you goosebumps and bring tears to your eyes. I didn’t think I liked vocal music. Also, good cultural/historical lessons on the CD jacket.
music to soothe the weary soul
author: MauraThis is a simply beautiful album. The harmonies are tight and the music is not overproduced. There is nothing better to come home to at the end of a stressful day.
Superb. A stark contrast to those who consider Amy Grant traditional music.
author: Damian WarshallVery elegant, tight performances. Production well done in dramatic contrast to the current over-post produced traditional music on the market. Pure listening pleasure.
loved it
author: lambiei thought overall the cd was lovely. a bit homogenous however. i think it would have been nice to mix up the tempos more. but overall, simply sweet.
My favorite gift CD to my favorite friends and family
author: AliceOf all my cd's, this is the one I play the most and I have given this album as a gift many times. I love The Lovely Girl & O Dove Your Song...and play those tunes with my iphoto slideshows of family pictures.
Extremely Beautiful
author: MAPI really enjoyed listening to this entire CD after hearing Navan featured on the Celtic Connections radio program(thanks Mr. Kelso-Crow!). I can't describe what listening to this CD is like. It is beautiful beyond description.
Immersion of Irish
author: TeresaThis was a gift for my husband. He's a true American bastard - a mix of many cultures, but his heart is Irish. This CD made him feel like he was at home.
Bee-You Tea-Full
author: ScottExcellent first album from this group. Perfect for relaxation at home and to calm one during rush hour. The harmonies Navan achieves are nothing less than celestial. Good cross section of moods. Not all upbeat or all melancholy. Every song is wonderful. Thx Navan!!
Like bathing one's ears in aural silk.
author: DFKSmooth, mellifluous, calming are just a few of the adjectives fairly applicable to this CD. At times, it reminds me of Gregorian chant meeting Celtic. I want more . . . and sooner would be better. Its time for a third CD.
Beautiful a capella music
author: Ruthie RoseIf you were only going to buy one a capella CD I would recommend one of Navan's. I don't know anything about Celtic culture, so can't vouch for their authenticity, but I CAN tell you this CD is beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. The harmonies are elegant. The overall effect is one of tranquility.
fantastic
author: dianneThese voices create other-worldly, beautiful and soothing harmonies. Gives old favorites a whole new feel. Have played this CD non-stop since I received it.
FABULOUS.
author: cLove the intermingling and beauty of the voices unaccompanied.!
author: MaryI took this CD and played it at dinner time at the Nazareth House Nursing Home in Stoughton, WI, and the residents made special comments on how beautiful it sounded. This nursing home is run by the Poor Sisters of Nazareth, many of whom come from Ireland.
Hard to find, carefully researched, and beautifully sung Celtic music
author: HaddayrSome folks not familiar with Celtic languages and culture might think this CD is "easy listening," but it is in fact a bold and interesting CD taking traditional tunes and old Irish Gaelic, Scots Gaelic, and Cornish poems and putting them together. This is the most traditional Celtic music at its core: it is what Celtic music was _before_ the pipes and fiddles, but with modern innovations that nod to the musicians' American roots, and I'm thrilled to have found it. As the CD progresses, there are some very slight intonation problems here and there, but the voices are incredible and the research and hard work quite evident. Anyone interested in preserving Celtic languages, sean-nos and harmonic singing, or just plain beautiful sound should have this CD.
Harmonic Vocals, good music to relax by
author: AnneThe entire CD was harmonic vocals with no surprises to interupt peaceful listening. Even though there were no fiddles or whistles, typical of Celtic music, this was still a CD that anyone who likes old Celtic folk music would enjoy.
