notes
Songwriter Elvis Costello once said, "Writing about music is like dancing about architecture." And I agree. I consistently have a difficult time assigning my music to any certain category or genre, not because I consider it extra innovative or extra special, but simply because if all of my songs fit within a preset category, then I am selling myself short as a writer. Each song has its own personality and therefore should have its own style to fit.
While I don't necessarily like describing my music as a whole, I feel that each song's personality can be easily defined. This EP (It's a Sunrise) features everything from the driving, anthemic That's Why to the intimate piano ballad Before I Go. The project also features two "musical portraits" - the title track, which was written for my sister and brother, and the Beatle-esque Catherine White. Today is best described as the pop song of the EP, while Marigold (Don't Lose Your Fire) features an approach similar to Brit-rock artists such as Coldplay and Keane.
Now that you have met the songs, I suppose I should introduce myself. My name is Nathan Stauffer. I am a recent graduate of Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee, where I studied commercial songwriting. I have since had the opportunity to stretch my songwriting muscles in a few different ways such as writing and performing songs for weddings, writing and recording both major local and national commercial jingles, and writing and recording songs for various video and film projects. However, my greatest desire as a writer is to also be an artist. I feel that my strongest ideas are those through which I am truly able to express myself. It's a Sunrise is my first release as an artist. I am very excited to have this project out and even more excited that you have showed some interest in it.
