For decades, his familiar but unique saxophone jolts embellished Capeverdean music and the album "Formidável," a true inheritance with great sentimental weight, rhythmic wealth and communion of values, is a testament to the true talent and career of his exceptional artist. The SANTOS Brothers, Adriano and Nhela Santos, have dedicated their third "Reencontro" album to Luis Morais, a musician who has left his marks in the history of Capeverdean music.

"Formidável," a work of art from Morais' repertoire, is equally remarkable because it gathers together the distinct voices of Bana, Djosinha and Belinda, along side Santos brothers to celebrate master Luis Morais, who on February 10th of this year (2004) would have completed 69 years of age, if death had not removed him from our conviviality.

"Formidável," was perhaps the most recurrent word during Morais' conversations, either to evaluate a musical note, a finished work or show, to put across his joy when meeting friends or even to relish a genuine sip of grogue.

This record deciphers the role of Morais as a link between generations: a pioneer integrated by the illustrious Bana and Djosinha, friends in different phases, and the authors of this work, Adriano and Nhela Santos, two symbols of the new cohort of musicians who acquired their passion for music from Luis Morais.

"Formidável," an opportune gesture from the Company Sómuzica and its owner Tony Neves, reflects the necessity of constantly remembering and eternalizing the master, the friend, the professor, and the magician of the saxophone: the formidable Luis Moral.




BIO of LUIS MORAIS

Author of more than 30 titles, between LPs and CDs, Luis Morais, the most famous Capeverdean saxophonist, is honored in this record "Reencontro III" by the Rosario brothers, Adriano and Nhelas. Luis Moral was born on the 10th of February 1935 in the city of the Mindelo, Sao Vicente.

Originally from a family of musicians, he was a prodigy apprentice of Master Reis, who in the 1950s directed the Mindelo Municipal Band, of which Luis Moral was a student as an adolescent and years later became a master.

After he finished the military service, he immigrated to Dakar, Senegal, where for eight years he frequented a conservatory of music as he performed at local night halls along side Bana, Morgadinho and Jean da Lomba. Later, he headed for Rotterdam, where in 1965 he helped establish the band Voz de Cabo Verde with Frank Cavaquinho, Jean de Lomba, Toi d´Bibia, Morgadinho, Bana, and later Djosinha.

He returned to Cape Verde after the Independence in 1975, teaching music in high schools in Mindelo and Praia; for many years he directed the Mindelo Municipal Band and helped form a new generation of musicians.

He recorded with numerous interpreters of Capeverdean music, and carved his name among those artists who contributed to Cesária Évora's success.

Luis Moral was a pioneer in the recording industry in Cape Verde, a career initiated on Radio Barlavento at the end the 1950s with Titina, Djosinha and Amândio Cabral, among others, resulting in many singles manufactured in Germany that had been edited by Casa de Leão.

Luis Moral would come to die in the City of New Bedford on 25th of September, 2002.
