notes
This CD celebrates the music of Brazil with unusual repertoire and outstanding performances. The list of accompanying musicians includes guitarist Alfredo Muro and pianists Tom Grant and Steve Christofferson. Also featured are violinist Eddie Parente and the traditional percussion playing of Lions of Batucada founder Brian Davis.
"Curtin has spent the last four years exploring Brazilian song, and her CD is ripe with the fruits of this exploration. A line or two of translated lyrics helps the listener understand each song (sung in Portuguese), but the real connection is in the emotions conveyed by her effortless delivery." Victory Music Review
"Nancy's vocal interpretations are mesmerizing and sweet, suggesting she's been a Brazilian jazz singer all her life. One does not have to speak the language to feel the emotion - now that's a singer!"
Glenn Elfman, Pistol River Concert Association
"Wonderful music, full of warmth, fun and beauty."
Sheila Baraga, Saphire Hotel
"A silky, tender voice that caresses our sensitivity."
Alfredo Muro, guitarist
"Many of the same vocal qualities that distinguished Curtin's previous work remain, though she is now singing more sophisticated melodies. Smooth and warm, restrained and tender, Curtin's voice is well-suited to the soft elasticity of Portuguese and the contemplative nature of the songs in her current repertoire."
The Oregonian
"Jazz vocalist Nancy Curtin has released a collection of covers of Brazilian standards. She chose some truly excellent works from among that country's finest bossa nova and pop composers, such as Antonio Carlos Jobim, Milton Nascimento, and the great guitarist Baden Powell. Curtin's singing is mellifluous throughout, and the very fine performances by heavyweights such as Tom Grant and Steve Christofferson make for an altogether sweet survey of the wonderful songs that have been popular in Brazil over the past four decades.'
