THE SOUNDPATH STORY - (scroll down for biography)
I had always longed to make a recording of my own music. Born to two opera singers, and having performed for many years as a dancer and singer with the Meredith Monk Vocal Ensemble and the Laura Dean Dancers and Musicians, I had been seen and heard primarily as a performer of other people's work. I had not yet found my own voice, so to speak. I complained to my dear friend and colleague, Sonya Shannon, also an artist. She looked me squarely in the soul and declared that I had to sing. She insisted that I rent time at a recording studio one hour per week as if I were in therapy. I decided to do it and see what would emerge. Sonya accompanied me to the first couple of sessions as my artistic midwife, bringing her sketchpad and journal. I brought my violin and my pounding heart and let it roll. Sound engineer and musician, John Guth, quietly recorded my journey, capturing every impulse, melody, and meditation in sound.
I felt great! I now had the technology and the moral support I needed. I was granted help, despite my usual resistance to asking for it. Within a few sessions, I became aware that I was experiencing something quite new and profound: showing up for myself and being fully present.
I wanted more of this experience, and I wanted to hear another layer of sound. I remembered that a fellow musician, Bill Ruyle, had moved to my hometown the prior year. I hadn't talked to him in more than a decade. I decided to call him out of the blue. "Bill," I said, "how would you like to go into the sound studio with me and improvise." To my delight, he said, "Sure." Without any rehearsal or planning, we showed up on the specified day and simply began. From a few resonant beats of the tabla and melodic strikes of the marimba, a sound world began to unfold, a world into which I stepped with all my senses alive and attuned, journeying on waves that poured forth from my heart and soul. I was alive!
Here was a new sense of joy! It was time to share this experience. At first, I invited a small handful of buddies to a friend's living room for a private performance. With increased conviction, I also increased my audience. The next two performances took place at my home and then at a magnificent salon overlooking the Hudson River. Each of these live performances was recorded by John Guth.
While the events were planned, the music that emerged was wholly spontaneous. And from these recorded musical meditations, I selected nine tracks that now appear on my first self-produced CD, SoundPath. Although I have sung on other compact discs, this experience was different. SoundPath brings forth the Song in my heart, the Voice of my soul, born of inevitability not design.
Once the CD became a reality, I was eager to share it with everyone. Listeners began to reflect their experiences of this music back to me. "It takes me on a journey." "Beyond Enya!" "I play this during meditation." "Very soothing." "WOW! What magic. The sounds surely altered my cells and shifted my vibration." "I just wanted more." What I have learned from people's responses is that SoundPath creates experiences and possibilities beyond what I might have imagined.

Let SoundPath Light Your Way
author: John SackettWhen was the last time you were in the Middle East? Recently, along time ago or never? Get out the most exotic incense you have, light some candles, sit back, close your eyes and let Naaz (pronounced Nahz) take you away upon the wings of her crystal clear voice and haunting melodies to a place at once ancient and new. And as the incense smoke snakes it's way through the air, it will mingle with visions of exotic and far away lands. Let yourself go. Be prepared, your body will want to sway with the currents created by Bill Ruyle's hammer dulcimer, tabla, and marimba, while Naaz's decidedly, though slightly dissonant violin, nestles it's way into your consciousness, creating a sense of freedom. It almost scoffs at the idea of boundaries of any kind. I recommend this CD for meditation, relaxing background for whatever you happen to be doing, or to create an exotic backdrop for a dinner party. It is not a CD of Middle Eastern music per se, but there is a definite flavor of Armenia and Persia, both of which are Naaz's heritage, in some of the tunes. The rest of the compositions go off on their own, exploring and discovering. They will take you into your own emotions and imagination. If I were to compare this music to anything it would have to be Loreena McKennit - less Celtic, though there is a slight flavor of this created by Bill's magical and imaginative hammer dulcimer. There were even moments he had me believing he was playing sitar. Though there are no lyrics, the music is very lyrical. I had the good fortune of attending the CD release party at which Naaz performed a few of her spontaneous compositions. My eyes kept wanting to close so that I could travel, and my body just kept swaying. Watching Naaz perform, it was clear that she was allowing the music to flow through her as well.

author: Bert BeverlyWhen I listen to SoundPath, I feel transported out of this world and into a world of peace, joy, and hope. Naaz's voice is clear and strong and very powerful. It all comes across perfectly. The blend is amazing. Everything seems just right with the instrumentation and the voice coming together in a most magical way.
SoundPath for Maximum Meditation
author: John PerkinsI teach self defense to members of the military and police. They need something to keep them balanced during these extremely powerful and agressive courses. Guided meditation is the method of choice. During the most recent meditations I have have used the Soundpath CD as my musical support. It has been highly effective. If you can get the marines to meditate and enjoy it you're doing something right. Soundpath gives you a direct path to tranquility. I can't recommend it enough.
Deep and Beautiful
author: Neal LevyNaaz Hosseini's SoundPath recording is a deep, beautiful, and important work of art. At this time it is the day before Thanksgiving and I am now listening to SoundPath for the fourth or fifth time in the last couple of weeks. It grows with each listen, starting out as quite interesting and unfolding to reveal itself as a work of art that is groundbreaking and nearly amazing. It is nothing less than a wordless sounding and testament to the range of human spirit, the product of a unique artist at a peak. It is both grounded and inspiring, an appropriate "soundtrack" for relaxation, focusing, or a genuine act of courage. The sound itself is hard to categorize, since like all original and great art it transcends boundaries. While it might be most easily labeled as either Middle Eastern or New Age, this doesn't do justice to the work. In its soulfullness, potency, and passion, it reaches into the territory of such an artist as Van Morrison, while in its fluidity and exquisite tenderness it is able to point towards the heartbreaking truths vocalized by Billie Holiday. SoundPath is a bold and sensitive recording of the human spirit. It is no exaggeration to say that Naaz Hosseini's SoundPath is a true Thanksgiving gift, a real and affirming reflection of life itself.

"Dance Magazine Recommends", by Wendy Perron
author: Dance MagazineLOOKING for a soothing soundtrack to accompany your bodywork exploration? SoundPath, with its rising and falling vocals and chimes, puts you on the crest of a tranquil wave. Naaz Hosseini’s voice slips from a serene hum to a full-throated wail to a sweet high-pitched lilt, flavored by her roots in Armenia and Persia. Bill Ruyle’s marimba sounds like pebbles in a clear running brook, and his dulcimer is as delicate as lace. Together they connect you with your own breathing and with the ebb and flow of nature. Picture yourself swaying in a hammock or riding a camel on the dunes. Hosseini, who has sung and danced with Meredith Monk and Laura Dean, is a psychotherapist and education consultant. Part of her work is helping people find their own inner voice. This music falls into the New Age category, but it doesn’t have the slick production values that often make such CDs annoying. You can hear each note and each shift of tone, and it leaves you the space to tune in or tune out as you please. Treat yourself to the pleasure of doing bodywork or yoga in a calming, enriching aural environment. 62 minutes, $14.99. See www.SoundShifter.com.
