Album Notes

Celebrated ambient musician Steve Roberts of Amongst Myselves began his foray into electronic and atmospheric music in 1999, after several years dabbling in a range of styles from guitar-based post punk and Australian pub rock to world music. Citing Tangerine Dream, Synergy, Kraftwerk and Vangelis as early influences, Roberts has taken ambient to new heights, with his last release ‘Sacred Black’ attaining international recognition. ‘Auburn Silhouette’ is the fourth release from Amongst Myselves, whose ambient career began in earnest with the 1999 album “Sun in the Bottle”. This latest release takes the listener on an unforgettable journey through the elements. Roberts’ drew inspiration for this album from his experiences in outback South Australia and 12 months working and travelling overseas, with each track evoking a different environmental experience. Amongst Myselves first starting writing and performing under the guise of Southern Garden, releasing six cassettes worth of material, the most praised being the post-apocalyptic The Last Day. In the late 80s and early 90s Roberts diversified into playing keyboards and guitars in many local Adelaide bands, including Spaghetti Machete and The Lost Tribe of Ubobo. But it was during the 90s that he became more aware of neu-Ambient music, and with the help of advances in computer based synths, began experimenting in ambient, new age and drone. Amongst Myselves recently achieved solid international success with the inclusion of the track ‘ Distant Horizons’ on a new compilation album ‘Ultima Thule – Chasing the Dawn.’ The album features 78 minutes of previously unreleased music from the world’s most acclaimed ambient composers, among them Steve Roach, Robert Rich, Tim Story, Jeff Grinke and Thom Brennan. For the first time, Amongst Myselves latest release is accompanied by a bonus DVD of three short films, produced by Roberts and based on tracks from the album. As a filmmaker and sound producer by trade, Roberts says that creating film to help convey the feelings within his tracks has been a long-term goal. “This is one of my most rewarding pieces of work to date - and certainly a headphone experience,” he said.

HOLE IN THE SKY---GOT THIS BOOMER WHERE HE LIVES
author: MARK BOLLIGER
I was sampling tracks on Amazon thru headphones and had ECHOES on in the other room. Suddenly, Hole in the Sky appeared at the end of the program. I shut down Amazon IMMEDIATELY and sampled the rest of this album. INSTANT SALE. This is reptilian brain, subconcious level music--goes right to the gut. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED TO DISCERING LISTENERS!
