Mute Angst Envy first formed in 1987 in San Jose, California. The early period of the band culminated in the release of the Trust EP on Epithet Records. The Archetype/Trust CD, released in April 1992 on 21st Circuitry Records, charted on college stations around the country and was distributed both nationally and internationally. Mute Angst Envy supported this album with many headlining shows, as well as supporting touring bands such as Xymox and the Wolfgang Press. In 1995, the band took a hiatus, and in 2004, Mute Angst Envy started playing and recording again.

The latest Mute Angst Envy release, "South 11th Street," is a study in extremes. Beauty and aggression play opposing forces throughout the album. The darkly melodic songs range from atmospheric dreamscapes to heavy Rock. This album consists of new material and previously unreleased tracks. Includes MAE's version of The Cure's ''The Figurehead." On Kitchen Whore.

"Peninsula alternative rockers Mute Angst Envy, who this month will release their debut EP on Epithet Records, have enjoyed regular rotation on Live 105 radio this summer, beating out challengers five nights in a row on the station's 'New Music Challenge.' The group's five-song effort is laden with atmosphere, drama, and an unusually strong musical direction- particularly on 'Creep', 'Trust' and 'The Bloodstained Ritual.' The group's members - Jack Holmes (guitars, bass, vocals), Keith St Thomas (same), Paul Zimmerman (guitar, keys) and newly added drummer Les Shanrock - hooked up a couple of years ago at San Jose State.
'Our sound goes from slow and brooding to fast and ferocious,' muses Holmes, show composes the group's material with St. Thomas. Having just wrapped up filming of a video for 'Creep,' Mute Angst Envy will be performing in conjunction with Live 105 at the Edge in Palo Alto later this month."

    Well, stumbling on this site was a nice treat. I adored the first release by this band...but that was a decade ago and assumed the band disintegrated. Finding this release unexpected was quite a surprise. Whereas "Archetype" employed traditional minor guitar washes with classic "goth" type of effects, this new release sees the band move more to the dark sounds of electronics with highlights being of guitar bass. Based from the liner notes, glad that this release got as far as it did with years of demo takes and unfulfilled destination for a follow up to "Archetype." Worth a listen, as is the first release. Hope to see more.
