Must Love Trash(MLT) is a Washington, DC-based rock band made up of four full-time members: Adam Rosenberg (Lead Guitar/Vocals), Matt Scharf (Rhythm Guitar/Vocals), Michael Strauss (Bass/Vocals) and Chetan Rao (Drums). The band was formed in March 2007 and has gained buzz in DC with their unique sound described as a blend between alternative garage-rock and jam band drawing influences from Talking Heads, Phish, Neil Young, Blind Melon and Cake. MLT has gained notoriety with their energetic live performances and showmanship, priding themselves on never playing songs the same way at each show. Their “anything goes” attitude during live performances where their catchy originals get audiences moving has led to the band being described as “loud and local party rockers” by a local music publication.

I have watched this group through the early stuggles with a unified musical identity. MLT's debut recording is a promise fulfilled. Harkening more to the kind of classic rock rhythms that compel disingenuious motion even when it backround filler, Soggy Basements contains several tracks that penetrate consciousness. This is not music to drink luke warm beer by. Bay 69 proves it is still possible to write melodic surprises and the backround flute is a very nice touch. The Dog Song harkens to Phish's Wilson without the clowing sick-sweet of cover band devotion. The title track has a bit of musical bitterness without self loathing that characterizes so much of late Nirvana. It is not for the fainthearted...but then again neither is Guiness for the same reason.
