Marilyn Carino and Ben Rubin have written 10 new songs to create a sonic and lyrical landscape reflective of New York City entering the 21st century. Mudville's first full-length record is a venture deep into cutting-edge soul-electronica and features appearances by saxophone great Seamus Blake, guitarist Avi Bortnick (John Scofield Band), telecaster maestro Jim Campilongo, and vibraphonist/producer MNO (Lumin).
The Village Voice characterizes MUDVILLE's sound as full of "brooding sexiness" and singer Marilyn Carino's voice as "somewhere between P.J. Harvey and Sarah Vaughan".
Indiefan says the New York duo of Carino and producer Ben Rubin "...have created a truly unique sound that reaches into your soul and finds a home amongst your bittersweet memories and forgotten love affairs... The brainchild of songwriter/vocalist Marilyn Carino and producer/bassist Ben Rubin, MUDVILLE began in San Francisco where Carino was a sweet crooner in traditional bluegrass and alt-country bands and loaned her strange, fearless voice to recording projects with Billy Talbot of Neil Young's Crazy Horse and with Rain Parade. Rubin was a bassist in that city's vibrant jazz scene and since moving to New York has remixed tracks (as Benny Cha Cha) for Wu-Tang Clan's Killah Priest, Brazilian Girls, Karsh Kale, Marshall Crenshaw and others and has toured with Crenshaw, Jazz Mandolin Project and Chris Brown & Kate Fenner. After these homegrown New Yorkers returned to their East Coast roots, they added electronic elements to their soul-based post-rock sound to create MUDVILLE. The duo list such varied influences as P.J. Harvey, Deltron 3030, Latin Playboys, Duke Ellington, Headhunters, Bill Monroe, Al Green, Pink Floyd and free-jazz saxophonist Ellery Eskelin.

author: UpSoundsA friend recommended Mudville's EP to me back in '03, for some reason I never got around to checking it out. That same friend hounded me to listen to this CD when it came out in '05 and my fool head resisted right up until a month ago. I'll never doubt that friend again! Gorgeous music, rich and substantial. The songs just permeate the soul. Marilyn Carino is right up there with the most affecting vocalists, jazzy and intimate but strong and otherworldly as well. The songs on this CD breathe and pulse like a human body. They're grooving, soulful, warm and will stir you up. Let's hope more music artists take their cue from Mudville's example and put half this much heart into the next millennium's sounds.
Mudville is like a synergistic cross between Portishead and Paris Combo.
author: Ben P. G.Not as dark as Portishead, not as frenetic as Paris Combo, Mudville is rich and textured, like bitter chocolate. I heard about them in a roundabout way: I read about a club in New York called "Pianos," and it sounded really cool. Then I read about the combo that plays there. The more I read, the more I had to have the CD. Check it out. I've never been to Pianos, but it's on my list of clubs to check out next time I'm in NY. One more thing: I have to admit I don't care for the cover art. The music itself is much better than the cover.
An astonishing surprise!
author: girlygirlI work in the record biz and its nearly impossible to get me excited considering all the crap music I wade through daily. A friend loaned me this Mudville CD and I was caught completely off guard, I not only liked it but I got excited by it in a way I was afraid wasn't going to happen anymore. It was literally a physical reaction. "The Hero of the World" is a groovy throb of a pop song that has gotten completely under my skin, as has the song "Othello". Marilyn Carino is a great singer and writer, she's really got some magic. If I were to use one single word to describe this music it would be "voluptuous". Thanks, Mudville, for giving me some medicine to cure my cynicism.
Grabs on and won't let go
author: HummbertIn a dour corporate-dominated age where mediocrity and blandness reign, it was a particular thrill to come upon this shining example of TRULY HAPPENING SOUNDS. While this CD doesn't fully capture the band's - particularly siren-voiced singer Marilyn Carino's - captivating live sound (astonishing considering the complexity of some of the production), from beginning to end it is a venture into a fat, juicy, groovy, sweet and sexy world I love entering and hate to leave.
Very laid back, deep sound. I like it.

author: Adrienne P.This CD is so moving, you can't help but be affected by it. Listening to Marilyn Carino sing "Surfer Girls" feels like having 100 friendly snakes twine around your body. They characterize this music as "trip hop" but its way more than that, its like from another time, but I can't decide if its past or future. Brrrrr... Mmmmmm....

author: TummyI got Mudville's 2002 EP and loved the way they combined those sweeping orchestral samples with a jazzy/bluesy vibe into songs that were so soulful. On this record, Marilyn Carino's captivating voice is even more assertive and sexy, she's sounds like a female Jeff Buckley singing some ballsy avant garde jazz. This record has everything great from their EP and great SONGS that pulse in your brain and surprise you with their depth and loveliness. I like this music more and more each time I listen to it.
