notes
My mother was a disc Jockey for an all female radio station in Spokane Washington in 1957. I used to come home from school and instead of mom having milk and cookies for me - I turned on the radio and there she was introducing Hank Williams, Elvis, Johnny Burnette, Bill Haley, Johnny Cash, Red Foley. When she got home she would dance on our coffee table in her hula skirt and play her guitar.
One day while cutting short a visit at my grandmother's house in San Jose, California (dad's mother) Mom piled me and my three sisters into our 56 Ford station wagon and took off back to Spokane alone with her new boyfriend and his buddy Cliff Carl - the biggest country star in the Inland Empire (Spokane) I rode for eight hundred miles with my head smooshed up against the case of Cliff's gigantic Gibson Country Gentleman guitar - I was hooked by osmosis to country music - thirty years later all these wierd country songs started haunting me at night and then during the day while I was trying to work as a Harvard educated architect for the most prestigious offices in the world. I started writing down the lyrics as I walked to work in San Francisco.
I diverted money meant for my children's college education into recording sessions. The songs on this album - Mr. Gasoline - MEET MISS MATCH are the result of twelve years of recording. I formed a performing band for a couple of years and the highlight of my performing career was playing in the opening slot for Mitch Ryder and the Detroit Wheels at the Last Day Saloon in San Francisco. I have worked with many of the most talented singers, guitar players, keyboard players and drummers and I owe them all so much for giving some musical credence to my wierd musical obsession.
Tons of thanks to Dave Kemp, Bobby Wyrick, Kevin Harris, Derrek Pavey, Eric Rowland, Nigel Gilchrist, Bill Spooner(founder of the TUBES)Katie Guthorn, Kathy Kennedy, Cary Sheldon, Thanks to the NCSA, the great songwriting teachers: Andre Pessis, and many thanks to Dan Howell for all of the great encouragement through the weirdness.
