Mr.Boogie Woogie (Eric-Jan Overbeek) works a lot of my favorite tunes in these 13 tracks. It opens with Wilson Pickett's Don't fight it, a classic not much covered, with Krieger's slide guitar taking the horn part and Grams the lead vocal. That's diva Anna Warr in the background. Grams sings lead on his co-written Trainbeat Boogie as well. Down the Road is a great old Smiley Lewis/Dave Bartholomew tune that BW infuses with the Nawlins piano and vocal it deserves. Of course you don't get more Nawlins than Iko Iko, and that's here too with the personal BW/GK treatment. The lowlands cat is a pianistic phenomenon, but it should not overshadow the fact that he's a great 'n' gritty R&B singer, inspired by the late Ray Charles among others. He soulfully covers Ray's What Would I Do Without You, which now must stand as a tribute, though BW usually covers "the genius" once per record. Greenwood's guitar is gorgeous here. The second Krieger lead vocal is the Lieber/Stoller classic, Riot in Cell Block # 9. Already the compleat guitarist and effective singer, Danny Krieger is just singing better all the time, adding occasional smoothness and vibrato to his graininess. It's a pleasure not only to hear Tucson cats at this level, but to listen to them develop over the years, all while mostly hidden away here in Dirt Town. Be envious, America! There's a passel of more hot New Orleans fare in these Wings: Earl King's Trick Bag, Allen Toussaint's Hello, My Lover (especially fine DK vocal), and the first studio version of a BW signature piece, Swanee River Boogie, the Stephen Foster chestnut through Fats Domino and Ray Charles, with further BW arrangement. No overdubs, folks! At no point do any of the 10 fingers leave his hand! Grams thumps the bejeezus out of his doghouse. For the "long version" of Swanee River, you'll just have to catch Mr.Boogie Woogie live! I shouldn't leave out guitarist Greenwood's own tunes and lead vocals. With Bad Habits and Porkchop Man, he definitely demonstrates his idiotic command.
Scorcher: belongs in your permanent collection!
author: Chuck Graham / Tucson CitizenWe can definitely say Mr.Boogie Woogie is not an acquired taste. His enthusiastic piano attacks are instantly accessible. He starts playing, you start smiling. His concert trips to Tucson from his home base in the Netherlands are nonstop parties. So is this album. Working with our own Tucson rock 'n' roll heroes Danny Krieger (guitar) and Steve Grams (bass), along with guitarist Dicky Greenwood and drummer Ab Dekker, Mr.Boogie Woogie lays down 13 tracks worthy of the greasiest, smokiest, bestest roadhouse in the world. He might be from the Netherlands, but Eric-Jan Overbeek (Mr.BW's real name) has listened to all the right players. There's a strong stride sound in his left hand, a lightning attack in his right hand. But even Elton John and Billy Joel know how to pound a piano. What Mr.BW does so much better is swing the piano. The difference is, you not only start moving your body and tapping your foot, but your heart and soul are picked up and carried away to the Land of Good Times as well.
