Is it a novel? Is it a CD? "It's both," says singer-songwriter, Morty Shallman, whose new collection of hook-filled, melodic pop rock songs, "Love's Oblivion - A Novel in Twelve Pop Songs" is now available on the internet at CDBABY.COM
"I've always taken a strong narrative approach to my songwriting," says Shallman, an Illinois native, who currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. "Treating each song as a chapter in a larger story, with characters, a plot, and emotional twists and turns, is simply the next logical progression in my work. After all, we've had rock operas, and concept albums for years. Why not a pop novel?"
After graduating from college at the University of Chicago, and performing both as a solo artist and as lead singer for top Chicago Modern Rock Band, "Minds of Babes," Shallman moved to Los Angeles several years ago to pursue his solo career. Since then, he has performed at top local Venues such as the House of Blues and The Gig/Hollywood and recorded with the cream of the crop of local musicians. Players on Love's Oblivion include Todd Sucherman of Styx, Ben Peeler of The Wallflowers, and Scott Bennett of the Brian Wilson Band. Shallman's unique brand of melodic, hook-laden modern pop rock has been praised by the Chicago Sun-Times, as "Buoyant, infectious and car radio ready."
The novelistic theme of "Love's Oblivion" is carried on into the record's package design, which was inspired by "pulp fiction" novels, complete with edgy cover imagery, a jacket "blurb" setting up the plot, and an "author's shot" of the artist, as opposed to the typical rock and roll performance photos found on most contemporary CD's. Inside, the each song's lyrics are printed as individual chapters in the twelve page booklet that accompanies the CD. And yes, there is a shot of the artist in performance mode.
While the precise details of the plot are open to interpretation by the listener/reader, says Shallman, suffice it to say, there's no typical Hollywood ending to this twisted love story. "No, it's much darker than that," say Shallman. "I suppose you could call it, a North Hollywood Ending."

A Fresh Breath of Originality
author: Jim AlbaI originally found this album because it was linked from my band's page(Nowhere Slow) as another artist in our genre to check out. I am glad I found it. This album combines great musicianship with great writing to form a truly enjoyable work of art. I recommend this album to anyone interested in what music is all about. For those of you who need a break from the assembly line produced pop songs of today's radio playlists, Morty Shallman's album is a must have! It's an honor to be a peer in the business with artists such as Morty!

author: Adam WaltemireHow great is this album? I've had it for less than 24 hours and I have listened to it over a dozen times. For starters, Morty Shallman's voice is incredible. He can sing mean and nasty (Chapter 7: Damn the Truth, high and beautiful (Chapter 2: Everybody) and with the power that great pop songs need (Chapter 1: Amy and Chapter 7: Paradise Road). The album tells the basic love story, with a great twist: she's a lesbian. It's boy meets girl, boy falls in love with girl, boy finds out girl is a lesbian, boys stays in love with girl. Like the title suggest, it's a Novel in Twelve Pop Songs. There is something in each of the twelve chapters in this novel that everyone can relate to. You'll find yourself listening to this CD over and over. You'll probably even want to tell everyone you know about this great album. I sure have.
